I have been running somewhat competitively since 2003. Running is something I love to do and have found myself running for hours at a time. I used running for “my time” to think and “my time” to spend with my God. In 2007 I was told that I had to stop running so much and consider having a knee replacement. So I cut back on my running and purchased a road bike to help with cross training. I went from running 6 days a week in 2007 to 3 days a week. But what I have found, due to my love of running and just training in general, I really haven’t cut back at all.

I was introduced to triathlons in 2004 and completed my first sprint distance triathlon. I borrowed a bike and didn’t swim a lick prior to race day. Although I almost drowned, I had a blast doing my first triathlon but it wasn’t my sport as I loved to run. But now that I bought a bike to cross train I started doing triathlons. I have done a few sprint triathlons and have done two half-ironman distance triathlons. I had a blast being out there for hours pushing the body further than I thought I was capable. Now it is time to try to do an Ironman: a 2.4 mile swim, 112 mile bike and a 26.2 mile run a total of 140.6 miles in a single event.

Why am I doing an Ironman? Partly to see if my I can push my body to complete such a grueling event and not to mention that I still need to a knee replacement. And as I sit here and type this, my knee is in pain and I haven’t even started training yet. But my main reason to do this event is because my God has given me a talent and a joy that I cannot explain; He has given me a gift. Now it is my job to give back and use this gift for the benefit of others.

I decided to do this race for the American Cancer Society. I am doing it in honor of and in memory of those who have fought against cancer. For those who have won the battle and for those who have lost. It is my way of giving back to God for the gift he has given me. My goal is to carry the names of 141 people (1 for each mile of the race) who have fought against this deadly disease with me throughout the race. In the weeks to come, I will open a charity page with the American Cancer Society for anyone that would like to make a donation. Whoever they are donating for, I will include that name with me during the race and I will dedicate training days in honor of or in memory of those individuals.

With God’s help and my wife’s support, I will manage my training and still have time for my family. I look forward to sharing my gift from God with all of you throughout the next several months. My training will officially begin on April 11, 2011 and end with a completed Ironman on August 28, 2011.
