I read somewhere, and it has stuck with me, that the opposite of love is fear. Essentially, all emotions can be boiled back down to one or the other.

Fear, easily.<br><br>
Proof: fear, in some fashion, is often an ingredient in the complex stew that is love. I ain't saying it always adds to the tastiness of the dish ... usually it doesn't.<br><br>
But love is a stew. Fear, even at its most complex, is but a broth from which one could make a stew. Often it's just, like, a bay leaf or some shit. Very elemental.

See, it's impossible to answer, because love means many different things to many people.<br><br>
In many languages, there are more than one word for love.<br><br>
I love my cat, my husband, my kids, diet Coke, the KC Royals, and many of you.<br><br>
Love is not always the same as love.

Also, I feel that fear and hate are very closely related, in that neither one can really be traced to logic in any way.

As in do we fear moving into the unknown even though it may bring positve change as opposed to love of what's comfortable.<br><br>
Or. in other terms, Do I step off the Titanic into a lifeboat where it's colder and not nearly so nicely decorated as the main lounge?

Sometimes I think the opposite of love is pity. When I dislike someone intensely, I tend to try to find something about them that I pity, then I can compartmentalize them into the pity box and forget all about them.<br><br>
I generally don't feel pity for those I love.

I think we can all agree that fear is built in. It is a survival mechanisim at is's most basic.<br><br>
Is love also something that is built in or is Love a result of fear. Fear of being alone, fear one's mortality, fear of self worth?<br><br><br>
PS - I think love is built in - by God.
