Sorry it's taken me so long today to post this. DD is in a production of Godspell and DS & I went to the afternoon matinee.

Background: My last dedicated 10k (I did a 10k as part of a LR in May, 2010) was in September, 2009, where I had major tummy issues at the end with a resulting 58:40, a pretty typical time for the few I've done. My official PR was in March, 2008 with a 57:50. My best 10k time (until today!) was actually a year ago at the 3M half in Austin, the first 10k, so I went out too fast with a 52:56.

Scene: 9:00 is a great time to start a race. I had one early cup of coffee here at home with my organic granola & plain yogurt while reading some new texts from Brooke. She wanted to make sure I would relax and have fun. This isn't a time trial, she reminded me.

I got to the river trails near downtown quickly. Here's what it looks like in the summer:

I had already picked up my bib # so just needed to get my chip. It cracks me up that most of the local races are "chip timed" because the chip doesn't activate until the finish so it's really gun or clock time. What a great atmosphere there was, with Elvis music blasting, the sun shining, warming up the morning from about 32F when I first got there. After about a 15-minute warmup with a couple of striders, I ingested a mocha Clif Shot gel with 50mg caffeine since I had cut back on coffee.

I lined up pretty close to the front at the insistence of one of my "tweeps" (it's a Twitter thing). When the gun went off, I let a big pack go by me, including my tweep. "You're going out too fast," I told her. I was right. We ran together later and then I eased ahead of her and never saw her again until I cheered her at the finish. But I'm getting ahead of myself. Strategy is important as I suggested so I stuck with the plan to hold myself back until the turn-around. Brooke's text reminded me of this. Here are my splits in km's & miles (of course you get an extra bit of a km because my Garmin came up with about 6.25 mi. so that's pretty close:

My clock time was 52:33 and my watch says 52:26. If this were a big goal race or a time trial, I would have been gunning for 52 or better like Tamster and Labduck talked about this week, but I'm very happy with this huge PR! It's very rare for me to get negative splits, unless a course is just perfect for that like a screaming downhill at the end. With this being pretty flat, the course wasn't a factor. Conditions were perfect. My tummy was perfect. I didn't place in my AG and didn't expect to because it was a series race for the Oklahoma City running club and those guys are really fast. There was a 5k, too, and I wish they would have made that their series race! I didn't come in last in the group either. 33/58 male and I don't know overall because the results aren't posted that way.

Thanks for reading!

eta-sorry I can't get the image links to work, so you just have to click on them
