Okay, geek out time.

I've been keeping track of the casting news and I have a few observations:

Orlando Bloom! I guess that while he wasn't in the first book as a character, one can imply that since he was definitely alive at the time and living in Mirkwood he could appear. Okayfine.

They've cast people for Radagast the Brown (wizard) and Drogo Baggins (Frodo's dad). Hmmm. The first is plausible because there's all that stuff in the appendix of LOTR that explains just what Gandalf was up to and why he ditched the party at Mirkwood. I have heard that Christopher Lee can't travel anymore so I wonder what is up with that whole episode. Perhaps they'll go to England?

Cate Blanchett and Hugo "I am disappointed in you Mr. Aragorn" Weaving. Well, Elrond certainly is a character, but Cate? Maybe again part of that battle for Dol Goldur.

The Dwarves, especially the young ones are, well, good looking lads, from the same mold as Orlando Bloom. Dwarf eye-candy for wimmin? How are they going to carry that off?

BIll Nighy as the voice of Smaug? Seriously? Okayfine.

Filming starts in 8 weeks...

Well they sure mucked with the story line in LOTR and it turned out okay.

The pieces they are adding are from the appendices. I figure they add Drogo as the link between Bilbo and Frodo and how Bilbo came to adopt Frodo as an infant... there's the bridge. The book never did say who captained the armies, why not have Legolas in there? The appendices talk about how the attack on Dol Goldur figured in to bot the Hobbit and the LOTR.

One thing I would not stand for is Aragorn being in the movies, Viggo can't play a 10 year old.

LOTR needed a lot of mucking with - it was too bloody long and convoluted. I found the middle book so painful (It was the Ents that nearly sent me over the edge) that I almost didn't pick up the final volume.
