I finally got the time, and the weather to plant my garden this weekend! I headed out Saturday to our local farmstand/ plant stand .. and got some great veggies and herbs. I have 4 kinds of tomatoes in,2 kinds of cabbage, lettuces, zuchs and 2 kinds of cukes. I already had the bean and peas planted and they are on the way. I also got parsley, basil and golden sage to add to my little herb patch.

My garden was tilled and I added a nice layer of compost dirt to it. We had another notable crop of winter rocks in there too. DS may be 16 but he still enjoys splashing them into the pond. I have covered most all the garden space with black plastic. ( Mine is cheap.. water pipe covers that I slice up the side - 2lengths covers the whole place. I do SO love not having to worry about weeds.

Who has a garden ? What's in it ? I may need help with the peas.. I have the base for an old yard windmill thing for them to climb.. but I think I need to put some strings down and around it to let them wrap on ???? I keep thinking the beans need to climb .. but I have bush beans.. so they shouldn't need a trellis .. or do they? I'll try to post pictures soon.

It's amazing what you can do with old garbage cans.

.Mine isn't in a garage. I have it out behind my barn, It does not have the aeration holes on the side, which I will add ( good idea!) I have had mice in the\re occasionally and the neighbors chickens come over and clean up any stuff that escapes via the bottom door.

we use a huge batch tumbler/composter at the farm; but at home, I just have the 'black box' type out under my pine trees (yes, raccoons 'n' squirrels heart ripping off the little doors to get at the festering goodness)

it gets plenty hot under there in the summer; but I still use the compost starter that you sprinkle on top/soak/toss to get it up and going once a week for a couple weeks this time of year

Do any of you have rain barrels? I use it for the flower beds & the bird bath .

This is the third season for ours, and I LOVE IT!

Although I like this idea, around here (New Jersey), mosquitoes are really a bad thing. And, ANY standing water, they will go after.

Also, it hasn't really rained in two weeks either.

We don't usually need a rain barrel. ... in pic above you can see the pond we have about 4 feet from the garden. It does dry out pretty well some years, but most years I can just pull a bucket full when needed if the well is low.

With mosquitoes in rain barrels--my biology teacher used to keep fish in his rain barrel. He had another teacher get some small blue gills. I suppose any fish would do, such as feeders from the pest store.

Drilling holes in rubbermaid cans isn't that hard. We have several cans for yard waste. No, we don't compost. Sometime I'll get to that. I was forever leaving the lids off to cut down on stink, then they would fill with rain water. Using a hand drill, I put several smallish holes in the bottom.

I was gone for a couple of days and I swear my tomato plants doubled in size! As did the weeds in the back garden...

I *finally* remembered to haul my camera to the farm today....took pix of gardens, the pond, and the storm damage (holy schlitz, we lost some wonderful trees)

"lower" garden has sweetcorn, onions, squash, taters, punkins

upper garden (took several pictures to be able to include it all) has raised beds with beets, lettuces, peppers, basil, parsley, then there are roma/slicing/grape 'maters. the spring garden has string beans, melons, broccoli, cauliflower, zukes, cukes, sugar snap peas.

There are sunflowers growing along the garden fence line.

Peas, potatoes, tomatoes, cucumbers, raspberries and rhubarb. Oh and a pumpkin plant.

Porty - you have a little farm going there! Nice gardens... but I don't envy you having to weed them!

Very important when using planters - you have to remember to water!!!! - I lost my Strawberries, and 1 pepper plant - surprisingly my tomatoes are doing great

I know what you meant; but in truth, we actually DO have a farm. 170 acres, to be exact. Mom rents out the fields to a local dairy farmer, who plants alfalfa and feed corn. The rest is wooded, meadows, ponds, blah blah.

and as for weeding the gardens, hand weeding + the Mantis makes work less of a torture.

All gardeners need one of these toys....they are da bomb...

It IS a farm! Okay...

And I really wanted a Mantis.. but cannot justify the expense for such a small plot .. I do have a Weasel though= sort of the low tech, manual version of that.

Everything is growing nicely- can't wait to start harvesting- Lettuce will be first as it is almost ready now. ..

You guys have such nice gardens!

I'll remember you when all my tomatoes are coming ripe at once !!! - I think I planted too many... I will know this year, whether I planted too many (8 plants), and whether planting them at the same time was a bad idea. Although, they're all indeterminate, so, I guess the time I planted them doesn't matter that much. But, I guess if I had planted some a month later, I could still have them in October...not sure. I plan on a second planting of broccoli and lettuce, if I don't get too bored by it all when August rolls around.

Today, I noticed that a few of my pepper plants have holes in the leaves. Didn't see anything on them that would indicate anything, but, just on a whim I checked out the underside of the leaves on the tomato plants, and there's some type of eggs there.

So, I just got back from the local big-box home store with some insecticidal soap. Wish me luck.
