Tomorrow evening I'm leaving on Airtran for San Francisco. When I made my original reservation Airtran's website told me that for a small fee I could choose my seat or wait until I check in online. Being the cheap person am I waited. If you looked at the seating chart on their flight for tomorrow they only showed 6 to 7 seats available, I think to encourage people to pay for the privilege before you got stuck in the middle seat.

Anyway tonight I checked in and there were a lot more seats suddenly available. Airtran offered me the opportunity to upgrade to Business Class for a mere $129.00 (I said "no thanks") and then after I chose my seat in sardine class told me that for a mere $5.00 fee they could give me priority boarding instead of having to board with the general passengers. Once again I said, "no thanks". I'll board with the cattle, thank you very much.

Wonder if I'll have to pay to use the toilet?

I've been on Airtran several times and never had a problem. I just get tired of the games. Give me the price and ticket and be done with it. Of course, I am coming back from San Francisco in business class. I figure my legs will need the room.

I wonder if online travel sites play games, too. I booked a business trip recently and did several searches leaving at different times, from different airports, etc., trying to get the best price. Just about every time I searched for a flight from my home airport, the price went up. It made me wonder if they were adjusting the price on the fly based on what the reservation system was telling them about real-time demand.

Are you running the marathon out here? If so, good luck! The weather itself should be perfect (Twain never said the famous coldest winter being a summer in SF quote, but its felt like it a lot lately)

As far as the airlines, they've pretty much become a glorified bus for the most part. But considering that many people pay less for coach fare now than what was the average coach fare in 1970 ($300, which is equal $1600+ adjusting for inflation), is it any surprise?

Last time I flew I had the option of upgrading to one of the special rows with more leg room for $30. I declined (the extra 6 inches isn't a big deal when you're already too tall for those sardine cans). Got on the half full plane and upgraded myself to the emergency hatch row and had three seats with all kinds of leg room for free. :)

I like Air Tran a lot...their planes (717's and 737's) are so much newer than Delta's old MD-88's.

I never complain about the service or my seat since I generally pay less to fly to Atlanta than it costs to park my car at the airport.

Paying for a seat is dumb (although my gf does it when we fly together as she's afraid we won't get seats together) and priority boarding for $5 is just plain crazeee.

If you check-in online 24 hours in advance you can usually get a decent seat on the window or aisle. I generally go window as it gives me something to lean against and no one is asking me to move so they can get out.
