let's give this monster a thread of its own.

To begin with, it's 2 blocks away, and sounds as though it's more Community Center than mosque. Would one of you winged folk like to explain why it would be a bad idea to build such a structure in perhaps the most cultural, ethnically diverse area in the world?

1) Since part of a plane ended up inside this building, I think it still qualifies as "Ground Zero".

2) A large number of peole who lost loved ones on 9/11 are against the project. That's a good enough reason to make me believe that it's a bad idea to build it there.

Should it be illegal for them to build? No. But if the builders of the mosque truly want to "bring different faiths together", then they should listen to the people who still have deep emotional ties to that area. They've been offered land elsewhere in the city, so why not move it somewhere else? The people who want to build this mosque are certainly not "radical Jihadists" like the people who destroyed the Twin Towers. But they do practice the same religion. And thus they should be sensitive to the wishes of the people in that area who were so greatly affected by certain practicioners of that religion...

The mosque has been in NYC for many many years and it overflows into the street on holy days (like Fridays). I agree with you Kenyan, it seems more like a community center than anything else. It is a shame that regular Muslims get lopped in the same category as the terrorists. The news reports make it seem like they are building it on the site of the two towers. This is part of the problem.

reading interviews of the people behind building the mosque, i would NEVER EVER EVER think it was a memorial to the terrorists. These folks have been worshipping peacefully there for decades.

If an extremist Christian caused an act of terror, could no church ever be built nearby?

I was with you up until this. Why do you continue to hold Al-Quaeda and mainstream Islam on the same level? I'm assuming there were practicing members of the Islamic community who were also victims of the attacks (unless they got the coded warning in their previous edition of Al Quaeda Monthly and were able to GTFO).

Somehow I doubt there are very many folks out there celebrating 9/11 with a smirk on their face anyhow.....if they are they wouldnt last long in nyc.

Why do you think this is a memorial? Where has anyone ever said that it was a memorial?

Gator. We've lost if we let them stop this community center. What sort of freedoms did your founding fathers stand for? What sort of freedoms did the terrorists fight against?

This ISN'T Ground Zero. The Auschwitz convent was being built on the concentration camp land.

There's a very easy fix to this.

Just build it somewhere else!

If building it at (or very near, however you want to define it) to Ground Zero is offensive to the people directly affected by the 9/11 tragedy, then wouldn't it be the sensitive/morally prudent thing to move it?? Why won't the Imam move it? Why does he insist on it being at that exact spot? What motivation does he have in continuing to offend people who are still traumatized by the tragedy? Maybe their objections aren't completely rational, but shouldn't we cut some slack to people whose lives were changed in such a terrible way?

"Because somebody objects" is not a legitmate arguement. We celebrate freedom in this country. Not freedom for those that are "just like us." Not freedom for those who share our beliefs. Freedom for all. Period. If we don't stand for that, we have nothing.

A terrorist memorial is not being built. Its a peaceful community center meant to reach out and educate. But people want to get their panties is a bunch because a group of people who are different are doing something they don't quite understand. So rather than do the right thing, to show compassion and tolerance and to educate themselves, people want to use hate and fear and lies to make their case. Using 9/11 as a tactic to deny freedom is disgusting to me.

It is blocks away. How far away is away enough? The price was right and heck, the mavens of big business have been preaching the need for investment, these people have been in the neighbourhood for 30 years... longer than the WTC. I think that this whole issue is, as Olbermann says "Stupidity supported by rapacious politicians" and I'd add, media.

I find "just move it" to be a particularly disengenious idea given that land in this part of New York is in very limited supply.

I also fail to see how imposing a new injustice somehow atones for the original offense.
