Sooooo....what does a married guy do when he has many consecutive days of bachelorhood in front of him!?

Day 1 - Running with the Devil!!!

After dropping the family off at the airport, my mind is swimming in visions of hedonistic Coors commercial inspired BBQ-ed debauchery...or maybe I'll hit a pub with a bunch of buddies & drink 'til the sun comes up again...

Well intended, I thought I'd earn my keep by doing a little clean-up around the house.....

-clean the master bedroom

-clean the bathroom....tub, toilet, floor, mirror, sink, sweep, wash toothbrushes (really!)

-wash the car

Whew....don't wanna waste the day, so after walking the dog, I run up the BCMC trail & then head to the Village for some grub....buying dinner for one (because I neglected to scope out the fridge prior to heading out) I pick up one nice steak, some beer...Oh....I need a vegetable!! I swing into the vegetable market, but decide that the act of buying a single potato would probably put me on some sort of "most suspicious" person list...or it'd just garner me a lifelong ban from said market for being a pain in the ass. So....along with my lone potato, I pick up about 3lbs of blueberries, & a grapefruit. Hunh?.....it smelled good at the time.

Before I fire up the BBQ:

-Laundry

-folding of laundry.....dear wife....we need to discuss your fear of folding socks....OK OK Ok....most of them are mine....I'll give you that.

I manage to get the BBQ going & sit relaxedly under the trees....in the dappled sunlight, sipping a cold beer, reading a magazine, with Koda at my feet. Truly relaxed.

I burnt the steak.

Nighttime....too tired to go out...all my friends are married or runners.....mostly both. I watch shows that my wife usually frowns upon....Two & a Half Men, Baseball (I don't even like baseball), The Office reruns. Good stuff.

I turn on the guitar amp & noodle around for 15 minutes with the volume higher than my family would normally accomodate.

My dear wife suggested I shoul rent a porn off the cable...hmmm...curiosity gets me & I scan the selection....I scan it again....hmmm...some of the titles suggest freak fests, low-budget handy-cams, or Brokeback Mountain genre stuff. The pictures that go with the titles don't help. I settle on something that looks "klassy"...or at least somewhat tasteful...the title is something like "On the Wings of Love" or something like that....Immediately after hitting OK, I was horrified that it might be some tampon infomercial. Well it wasn't. Frankly, it wasn't much of anything.....15 minutes of some woman in soft focus wearing a low-cut sundress wandering along a farm road reminiscing about somebody...it had a definite air of Ingemar Bergman (the director....not the actress).....yawn. I woke up to the credits running on a black background.

If there was anything racey, I missed it. $12 poorly spent.

I am a shame to the male species

Day 2 - Run to the Hills

Wake up.

Koda, a 90lb Bouvier with the bladder of Jack Russell, says we need to go....NOW!!! So, up the trail & into the Village we go...gorgeous sunny day that it is. One of the gals at the coffee shop sees my dilemma of trying to figure out how to order a coffee without potentially unleashing the hound from hell on an unsuspecting public....too many loud people & bicycles around....& I get front door service...awesome. The public is safe yet again.

Get home, leave Koda behind & I head to the Mercedes show & shine...the Merc is looking spotless. Many other gorgeous vehicles are assembled on the grass at Lonsdale Quay. I meet lots of people with unlimited knowledge of their cars & mine....I pick up a slew of tips & details about the 450SL. Mostly, I learned that there are lots of old guys who own Mercedes...there is one guy younger than me....he owns a 2010 AMG SL55 with 760 horsepower...it's worth about $175,000. I think his dad is very successful.

I did win a mercedes key chain....for something....I can't remember what.

I head back home & Koda & I enjoy a casual walk. So far there are no wild parties, no dancing girls, no endless kegs of beer. I invite my brother & SIL over for dinner...they accept. I have to shop.

I head up to the Village & load up on steak, asparagus, potatoes (3 !!!), & bell peppers. The folks at the coffee shop have been alerted to my temporary bachelorhood & they make sure I'm not eating 3 square meals of their sandwhiches.....so far so good. I bump into my neighbour Mia & invite her to join us on the patio later.

Brother & SIL show up....both sorta tired from their respective work shifts. We do a bit of tidying up in the living room ('cause that's what you do when family visits...you put them to work!) & fire up the BBQ. We have some drinks & chat a bunch. Mia shows up early, but brings wine & food for the grill. She's very entertaining & keeps my brother & SIL engaged....I fogot to tell my brother that she's a relationship therapist, but he figured it out eventually... hehehe.. Voila....dinner & therapy. Very interesting. Eventually, it's time to leave.....about 11:00... Brother & SIL head out, & as Mia leaves, she's up at the front gate & yells (not like she ever talks quietly)..."thanks for dinner, I think I'm gonna try that pole dancing thing after all"....alluding to something she had been talking about with my SIL. It's late on a hot night, so I'm sure every neighbour had their windows open.

Great....the neighbours think I'm having a Coors party afterall. I add to my chore list: "-damage control".

I turn around, go into the kitchen & sort out the mess. I develop an appreciation for my mother's Sunday dinners.

Day 3 - Running on Empty

Wake up early!!!! Walk the beast. Get to work. Negotiate. Work. Talk.

Time to go grocery shopping. My dear wife has left me a Costco card with about $200 so I can buy groceries for the next while. Have you ever tried to buy anything at Cosco as a single person? I don't think the concept works....unless the bulk condoms & vaseline were intentionally for that select group.

So....I make it our with less than $70 & I have enough for the next two weeks. Here's what was in the cart:

-16 pack of burger buns

-12 pack of pre-made lean burgers

-1 large back of beef jerky (for an upcoming race

-1 pound of butter

-1 large frozen pizza (turns out it was 2 for 1, so I got an extra as well)

-1 large bag of kettle chips (to go with the buregers...duh!)

-1kg bag of Jelly Bellies....because I can!

Looks like it'll be burgers everyday for the next week.

At least I still have a ton of bluberries & a grapefruit for dessert!

Mike's coming over for dinner tonnight so we can chat about the Fat Dog race on Friday.....maybe he'll take some blueberries with him?

Ha! You're a Wild Man!

Some of the stuff I did when the DW and kidlets were away for 3 days: watch TV and movies that the DW doesn't like, play video games, clean the house, drink beer and watch the grass grow while I do a crossword puzzle. Real crazy stuff! Cooking for one is teh suck though.

when the in-laws took DW and the Trio for the July long weekend I spent my time scraping paint off the walls, replacing a bedroom door and cleaning up after myself. I did manage one pub dinner and beers with a buddy in all that. My hands are still healing.

Taking notes. I will have 10 days of this at the end of next month. Each and every time it happens I end up doing more work than I would have thought possible.

You guys amaze me. All the times I was left home alone for 5 days or 10 days, I was paralyzed by...I don't even know what. I did the laundry and kept the house clean, but criminy, I didn't cook (I ate, but I didn't cook) and I thought about all the things I could do but never did them. Maybe I'm just lazy.

She like 2 1/2 Men, but the content is fairly racey when kids are lurking around.

The Office is love/hate for her....Michael is too similar to someone she knows so it drives her crazy.

Grizz...plan ahead. A maid is about $40 to $75.

If you get the place cleaned about 2 days prior to the family return date, then it won't look suspiciously clean. You can take all the credit & bank it for another weekend.
