I was watching that game live, and my initial thought was that he tripped him on purpose. After watching the replay a million times, it does appear that he did stick his knee out every so slightly. Frankly, I think he could he played it off like "He was running down the sidelines out of bounds, almost on a direct line towards me. I was afriad that he would collide with me, so I braced my body for a potential impact". Or something like that. I mean, the dude was 3 feet out of bounds while he running down the sidelines. Frankly, I think that would have been believable. In fact, on the replay, you can see the coach next to him (to his right, our left) seemed to lower his shoulder just a little, as if to brace himself.

Watching the game live it was easy to miss the trip. But the replays appeared pretty clear to me that the NY coach deliberately tripped him. As for the confession I think the coach knew he was caught by the cameras. It's no different than a runner admitting he cheated in a race by cutting the course short when he learns there was a timing mat he failed to cross. In either case the "result" will find your dishonesty out, so you might as well confess to try and cut your losses. IMHO, the tripping constitutes gross misconduct on the part of the coach and he should be permanently removed from his position as opposed to being merely suspended, albeit without pay.

True, but isn't that where the coaches are supposed to stand??

True that sticking out the knee was wrong, and the coach penalized as he should have been for trying to injure a player by sticking out his knee, but the player was waaaaayyy outside the playing field. I'm sure the league will be adressing this too.

I looked at the footage more closely last night. If you stay focused on the Dolphins player who got injured, you'll notice that he did not go way out of bounds on his own accord - the two men the Jets had blocking him did a great job of pushing him that far out.

I don't mind that the coach had the men line up like that (it IS their sideline) - in a way, it's taking advantage of the rule that it's considered unsportsmanlike conduct if that gunner on the outside covering the punt doesn't try to get back inbounds ASAP (it's to prevent him from running along the sideline to try to avoid blocks.) The Miami gunner was in the process of doing that...that is, until Alosi stuck out his leg.

It's a tactic used by the return team to keep the "gunner" from getting down the field quickly.

They have 2 guys "jam" the gunner to keep him from getting down the field to tackle the returner.

If they are pushed out of bounds, they are allowed to run back in...they aren't supposed to run out of bounds, but many do.

What the Jets were doing, and other teams do this as well, is lining up a coach and some inactive players to act as a "boundary" outside of the out of bounds.

So that he couldn't go past them without running in to them, and he'd have no choice but to slow down. Advantage Return Team.

Anyone who says this isn't coached is lying.
