Q1 - Wattle Waddle

This new level in insanity began 11/25/10 at 7:05AM, PST.

The Pacific NW was slammed by a couple of weather fronts that were just tapering off as the race started. It was a balmy 27 degrees and snowing hard. But on a positive note, it was warmer than the day before (17 degrees).

The marathon was a double out and back, on a slick as snot rails to trails course. Original goal was to take it easy and try to average a 10:00 m/m pace but I felt good and thought I was clicking off a 9~9:30 m/m pace. Effort wise I was, but was only huffing along at my goal pace. UGH. Finished in 4:26 and my hips hurt. Running in snow is hard!

FA Elapsed time: 4:26:57

Miles ran: 26.2

Q2 - Wishbone Run

11/26/10

Loop course ran four times for a total of 27.8 miles on the trail. Not too technical trail run, but the melted snow and ice turned the course muddy in some section, especially on the third and fourth loops. Goal was to run it at 12:00 m/m pace and I was close. Finished in 5:25

Ran for a couple of minutes with Larry Macon who is doing the Quad as well. He is also in the Guiness Book of World Records for most marathons ran in a year (103). When he asked if I was doing the Quad, he responded that was insane. I told him that him calling me insane was like Dahlmer calling Ted Bundy insane :) He said he will probably use that.

Got cleaned up and drove to expo to get my trash for Sunday's Seattle marathon. As a bonus, I spun the wheel and won a box of brown rice.

Wow. I am almost embarrassed to post my shameful DNF report! LOL. Wednesday night I came down hard with a cold and was unsure if we would get to the Turkey Trot on Thursday. Well, I woke up after about 2 hours of sleep and felt ok so we went to the race. We got there and I registered for the 5K and Zoe for the kid's race. Then it started to rain, hail, sleet and snow :( I ran half of the kid's race with Zoe (1/2 mile) and then we bailed, but this was the origianl plan. Then I put her in the stroller and we went to run the 5K. The weather was really bad and even with the canopy on the stroller, she got really upset. Not sure why so I bailed after about 2 miles :( I cannot believe I DNFed a 5K Then I was too sick Friday to run and Saturday I worked and had company. Today I eeked out 5 miles with Zoe. So I did 7.2 miles in 73 hours. WTF? LOL. Good thing this is taper time, right? :D

Hi!

I've been busy with work and training so I stopped posting :(

Ginseng and I ran the "Weather is too nice for a rest day 25K" today. The run started at 10:30 AM Sunday at the bottom of High Drive (6500 feet). We quickly hiked up High Drive to the Bear Creek trailhead. From Bear Creek trail, we headed up to Deer Park. There was a little snow and ice in the shade but the trail was mostly clear. At Deer Park (9000+ feet), we jumped onto Pipeline trail and headed to Jones Park. At Jones Park, we started down North Cheyenne Creek trail. There was a little bit more ice on the 7 Bridges section. At Gold Camp Road (7200 feet), we took the switchback trail up to Captain Jack's Trail and Mt Buckhorn (8000+ feet). At Captain Jack's, we turned right towards (and down) High Drive (7800 feet). We ran down High Drive past the Bear Creek trailhead to the Section 16 trailhead. The chilly wind was starting to get to me but I decided to go the whole distance. So we turned on Section 16. We made our final ascent to the top then headed down back to the car. Finish at 2:12 PM. Total time: 3:42.

Q4 - Seattle Marathon

11/28/10

My goal was to hang with 4:00 pace group for as long as I could. Things went well until the poomonster came a' calling at mile 19. No worries, there was a couple of growlers at each mile marker, and at some race volunteers were calling out elapsed times with a bull horn as runners passed. Mile 19 had such a volunteer. I gotta say, there is something disconcerting as you're trying to use the toilet hearing times rattled off in a really loud fashion. I felt like I was part of a NASCAR team: 2:47:13.... 2:47:15.... 2:48:12. Never been timed in the bathroom before.

Anyway, still was going at a good clip, feeling fine and then came mile 20. This is where the hills start. And by hills, I mean "oh [email protected]". These lasted until mile 24. Bled a little time here, but limped across the finish line in 4:13.

So began FA 11/2510 at 7:05am PST

Finished FA 11/28/10 at 12:18pm PST

Total time: 77:13:00

Total miles; 106.4

Average m/m pace: 43:33

Actual running time 18:40:00

or 10:13 m/m pace

I probably should have just waited and threw all of this in one R/R, but I wanted to post as I went.

Thanks for your patience.

you'll have to bear with me, as i take my reports quite seriously the "Any Old Dumbass Can Do It, Fat Ass 50k" started out one way but ended up being not what i imagined. at least, my weekend did, and since i am an "emotional" runner, i bring everything with me on the run.

we kicked off on turkey day at 9 am for a local 10k. my hubs and i were competing in the husband/ wife category as team "All-Nighter", which makes us sound like creeps to anyone who doesn't know that we ultra, but whatever. basically we kicked butt and both PRed by several minutes. but in a twist of fate, the timing company had a power outage and we are left being unscored, so we have no idea how we placed as a team. oh well. was a cold and fun way to start off the 50k.

then there was this pesky little interlude called thanksgiving, complete with over consumption of dinner rolls and pecan pie. to get things moving, i take a 5 mile walk that evening. and since i am an ultra"mover" i count my walks. btw: walking in total darkness, save for a decorated house or tree here and there while listening to the mormon tabernacle choir sing "carol of bells" = CHILLS. i'm just saying. awesome.

next morning i am treated to the "wind and rain respite, barefoot dreadmill run". i made it 5.5 miles watching house hunters on Hulu before i have to scamper off to yoga class. but not before my 3 year old, who has been complaining of an itchy bug bite she got a couple weeks ago, begins crying because it itches so bad. when i look, i see a gross ring around the bite. ugh, ring worm! i make a doc appt. and jet to class. (maya, pictured below)

doctors appointment reveals child does not have ringworm, but lyme disease. crushing.

saturday AM it is around 30 degrees with 30 MPH winds so i decide on headphones to drown out the howling noise and 1 mile loops around my neighborhood in case i get cold. from the first step out the door, all i can think if is my kid and my family. i don't really care about running. i am miserable and am just getting this dang thing done before yet another yoga class. i bag it at 10.5 miles, with a few miles left to go for my 50k. but i just don't care. i want to see my baby. when i come home she comes tearing through the kitchen and jumps into my arms. putting all of my horrible daydreams that i had for those 2 hours, to bed for now. (below, the tell-tale bullseye rash)

now i am well over 48 hours for this dang thing and feeling like a wimp. the rest of saturday passes by with no running or walking, so i am left to finish this morning on the treadmill while the 5 year old bangs on the piano in her jammies, and the little one colors.

total time for 50k: 72:35 and all hopes of entertaining you with exciting pictures of trails, christmas decorations found on my travels and silly daydreams had while getting this done, are lost. in the end, all i could think of was my kid and running mattered to me not at all. sorry to be a big huge bummer, but wanted to at least get my experience up. hope everyone had a better time than me. i know JustJim did just awesome at his race, but i'll let him tell you about that. chris g, beautiful pics... i'm jealous...and meri- adorable pics!! it goes too fast doesn't it? @runNYpal, thanks for getting this thing together. it at least gave me some motivation to keep moving. looking forward to hearing about everyone else's run

DAY 1. THANKSGIVING DAY.

Official Start Time: 10:08 am

Location: William B. Umstead State Park

Wilbur, Sarah and I met up with our friend Nicole, who is training fo her first ultra (NC Fat Ass 50K, in Jan). I was expecting the park to be empty - there was a lot of people out building up an appetite for the inevitable pig out later.

We had a gentle plod, and actually ended up with a "PR" for the CCW Reedy/Graylyn/Turkey loop [did someone say 'turkey'? Yum!]

YES!! SOMEBODY DID SAY TURKEY!

TURKEY TURKEY TURKEY! (Umsteaders will recognize this sign as the end of the sawtooth section, and the beginning of a nice descent). The turkey sign was a nice reminder that I had cooked loads of food, and by the time I got home, it would be all ready.

Mrs Jimbo was working Thanksgiving day, so it was just me, the pups, some Yueng and a bottle of port. Jimbo heaven. Oh, and turkey, lots and lots of turkey. Aid Station 1 was cool. Turkey turkey and turkey. Booze too.

Day 1 total: 9.5 miles

DAY 2: The day of the dumb ass

Just me and the pups. Jordan Lake, New Hope Trail.

I guess people round these here parts take black Friday seriously. Both parking lots were empty - I had the whole park to myself.

The pups by the Jimbo Wagon

So - why the day of the "Dumb Ass". Well, I had a 50k set for Saturday. A few yards into the run, it clicked that it wasn't the smartest thing in the world to run when the wet roots were covered with wet leaves. Doh!

We did the Red Ankle Breaker Trail (Dumb Ass) and the Grassy Loop. Wilbur went for a paddle.

Day 2 total: 6.25 miles, accumulative total: 15.75

Off to the aidstation for some turkey.

Day 3 - Derby 50K

Derby is a tiny little community in NC. Just a community center is all that is there. Every year, my running club put on a 50k road race around there. 3 x 10.5 mile loops on rolling hills.

Let's just say that things went swimmingly well. My time on the course last year was 6:28. Official time this year: 5:29. So a huge PR for the course, and a PR by 50ish minutes for the distance.

This year there were no cows in the cowfield watching us.

I wore my Javelina skirt. I did not wear lipstick.

Mmmmm. Sexy or what?

Jimbo, with a PR and his medal. I chose red because it is hunting season (and I don't have a blaze orange skirt)

I went home and had some beer.

Day 3: 31.5 miles. Accumulative total 47.25

Day 4: Day of the stroll

I got me some beat up legs yesterday, so decided to use up the last 2.75 miles to just have a walk with the pups. We went to Jordan Lake. I know of a couple of trailheads, but have never wondered down them - so we had some fun exploring. Highlight was a new "Road to Nowhere"

"Road Closed 500 ft" Really? Ya don't say!

500 ft later, we figured out why the road was closed :)

And Wilbur (and Sarah) went for a paddle!

We did some wondering round, went bushwhacking to see if there was a way that two trails connected (we couldn't find it), and then went to the boat ramp and messed with the self timer on the camera to see if We could get a picture to signal the end of the Virtual Fat Ass for 2010. (had to do a quick loop of the parking lot to make sure we hit exactly 2.75 miles

Day 4 total: 2.75 miles. Accumulative total 50 miles.

EDIT: Finish time 4:05pm. 77hrs and 57 minutes total. Personal best for this exact course.

I went home and had some beer.
