A beaut of a morning here with temps about 55. There's definitely a crisper feel to the mornings lately. I got in 8 miles and let's just say I am glad that is done as it was not one of my finer runs.

Hello all,

There was an interesting article in the NYT this morning about the stubborness of athletes when they're injured. I figured many of us can relate!

http://www.nytimes.com/2010/08/17/health/nutrition/17best.html?src=me&ref=health

No workout for me today -- my hips are seriously wonky this morning. Tomorrow I plan to take a spin class early with DH, and then we're taking Mom to see Garrison Keillor. Please keep fingers & toes crossed for no evening rain as it's an outdoor performance.

Thanks & have a great day!

Tom, I don't have too much in the line of suggestions other than what you are trying. Other than maybe a cushioned mat to put on the concrete floor?

got up early for a run. ended up with 4.2 miles. air was nice and cool (maybe only low 60's at 6 a.m.?) but still fairly smokey. the air looks clearer, but the smell of the nearby forest fires means the air quality still isn't that great. Hope they can get that under control soon. It's burning at about 650 acres now - up some rugged, steep and inaccessible terrain so it's making firefighting very difficult. and air inversion and stagnant air means the smoke just hangs there which is proving problematic for fighting the fire from above also.

Sorry about all the smoky air you've been dealing with, Tamster.

tw, I was going to say that, too...a pad thing for that concrete floor.

6.25 blah miles. Blah, blah blah. On the other hand, my ankle is fine now and I ordered the components for a Race Day Magic Fairy outfit. Everything was cheep cheep ($2.99 for the wand, $1.98 for the antennae, etc.) but the postage added up... Yippee! I can't wait to see how dorky I look in it.

Good afternoon, Kicksters.

I'm gonna run a mile or two afterwhile.

I did a 1 mile and a 4 mile down hill over the weekend that have left my hip in peace. That's encouraging.

From here, hopefully it will just be a matter of holding back.

Just realized I'm going to miss the Bays Mountain race next month -I had a streak of 3. :)

TomWhite - there are some wonderful "chef" mats made for kitchens - they are really soft and add a lot of cushioning. They are called gel pro mats. I think you can get them right on amazon.

5 miles running plus a spin on the bike this morning with a neighbor. Our temps are dropping! It was only 58° at 6:30. I love early mornings.

Cool! I was there 24 years ago, around the time of Marathon #1. I'm thinking the ruins will still be there.

Good afternoon everyone. tomwhite, can you put a pad under one foot and move it around so you have one foot slightly elevated all day long? I read that somewhere once.

I ran my multi-paced intervals workout yesterday, and was called upon to pace the fastest of my trainees today for his identical workout; Thankfully the McMillan charts have him about 1 mile per minute slower than I, so I was able to pace him through his 1200 and 800's at paces that are about the fast end of my easy running zone; the 200's were faster than easy, but I convinced myself that they were basically extended strides, and I'm calling this a fartlek workout.

The good news is that it did not feel like a quality workout. Last week there is no way I could have done this workout the day after running my own; I had trouble just running a recovery jog last week.

My wife and 2 youngest kids are going down to Binghamton to visit her mom today and tomorrow; it'll just be the two oldest boys and me tonight and tomorrow. I think we should get Princess Bride from the Library tonight. Good Dad and teenaged sons 'bonding' material.

Thanks, SS. Wiping coffee spray off my monitor now... no hope for the khaki pants. You crack me up!

Brian, I can see the eye rolling now from your boys...

TW, I was thinking the same thing about the gel mats chefs use. I worked retail for 7+ years, the last 3 being in a department with hardwood floors, and me in high heels (setting stage for current metatarsal problems 20 some years later). One of the gals I worked with brought in a mat like that to have behind the counter. I recall a certain amount of shoving and elbowing to claim that mat space...

Tammy, sorry to hear about the fires; I can definitely relate! Ours are in the x thousands of acres though... and closest ones are on military land so can't do much with them (lots of unexploded stuff out there...). So, we're waiting for the drenching rains we usually get in August, which have yet to show up. I think they're waiting for Equinox time...

RAL planned, just 5 or so easy. Nothing special, but a nice break in the day.

The current fire that is closest is 20 miles west of Grants Pass and I live 10 miles west of GP, so as the crow flies, they are pretty close. The copters/planes are flying right over our house when they head over there.

beware of those amazon price mongers. you put something in your basket one minute, check back in an hour and they've jacked up the price a few pennies. We get the pennies squeezed out of us left and right these days!

Been gone a while, unplanned trip to AZ....moving SIL in 114°F heat sans AC. After that week from hell, a little smoke is no problem.

8 this morning, 15 on Sunday after 2 weeks of hardly running at all (only managed 29 miles, although I can say I ran 7 miles just outside of Death Valley in the August early morning daylight though)....trying to get serious about the planned 60K on 60th BD next month.

Evening all, a little low key from me but life in the UK has been tough lately with issues at work, Rach is still ill but more than that she has days when she is great and then rough again. This is frustrating for her and is making her stressed which in turn makes her depressed.

I'm training ok but feel a little withdrawn from everything, I am logging my points for VRAA but have slopped away from there as well.
