For those who don't know me, I'm hippo: a Maniac and trailrunner. Sadly, I don't have that many races this month, but there's a 100K in 2 weeks that should add some points. At the moment I'm trying to get rid of a nagging injury, so most of my points will come from crosstraining. I live near Portland, Or.

Billy....no idea what you're talking about but that's ok. Glad I make you think at least.

I grew up in SE michigan and currently live in central NY. Started running 12-05. Adding cycling to the mix and some trail running.

Hi everyone-

I'm Kris, and I'm grad student in astronomy at the University of Arizona. I'm coming up on my 1 year running anniversary, so that's exciting. I'm currently training for the Philly HM, running 5 or 6 days a week. I'm trying to get back to swimming as well. I missed my swim this morning, but I snuck it in this afternoon. Yeah, anchor was appropriate in more ways than one!

I'm sorry for your loss, Tithers.

100K Hippo?!?! I knew your name from my short time lurking in the CH, and I guess I knew you were a Maniac, but wow, you Ultra runners never cease to impress and amaze me.

Tim and Sara already know me (hi guys!), but it's nice to meet you Billy, Keith, and fatmantrying.

Going to go over and post my swimming points now.

Nothing but cussed stubbornness.

You might be interested that I'll be breaking my 100 mile cherry a couple of hours away from you in Fountain Hills AZ at the end of October.

FWIW, fellow Maniac (and dear friend) Olga will be running a mountain 100 in three weeks - I'll be on her crew. The following week, she'll be joining our hero merigayle for yet another tough mountain 100 at Targhee.

Dain Brammage: don't let it happen to you too.

Oh... I'm Courtney and I'm in Colorado...

Today is a rest day for me. I do have a 7 miler planned tomorrow (my longest run EVER) and a tri on Sunday. So I'll rack up the points then

Hi Courtney!

100 miles?!?! In 80*+ heat?!?! Wow....Do you have a finishing time in mind, Hippo? I've always been curious about how Ultras work. Do you stop to change/shower/eat? I'm not sure I could stay awake long enough to make the cut-off, let alone have to actually cover the 100 miles.

I'm Kerry(male) in Texas. This is my third year run/walking following a massive heart attack. I've completed 2-10Ks, 1-15K, 7-Halfs, 1-25K, 1-30K, and 1 Full. I haven't officially signed up for anything yet this season. I have a 50K on the radar but I told myself I couldn't sign up unless I dropped another 10lbs. Slowly, it's happening. The VRAA has been a big help in working harder this summer through the Texas Heat.

Unfortunately, I'm heading out on the 24th and it's doubtful I'll get any points in between then and when this round ends. My goal is to have put up 430 points by then.

No matter how bad it may often look, know that I am always trying! I'm literally running for my life.

My name (oddly enough) is Billy and I live in Scottsdale AZ, a city with which I have a love/hate relationship. I'm married, have 2 boys and write contracts for a living (you know, software, professional services, stuff like that).

As far as running goes, I've been doing it off and on since 2003. 2007 has been a pretty good year, an "on" year I guess, but I guess we'll see once the Air Force Marathon (Sept.) and Tucson Marathon (Dec.) come around.

I really enjoy the VRAA and find it to be a great motivational tool. It's neat to be a team with such great people!

Cheers,
fatmantrying: I've been coming around to the opinion that it's about how you play the hand you're dealt, not where you finish in the standings. By that measure, you're doing pretty well. (and I'm not necessarily talking about any particular race or anything.

keriksen: as far as 100 milers, you just keep going as much as you can. "Relentless forward progress" is the mantra of ultra people. You'll often see them leave the aid station before they're ready to go and eat, adjust, and do everything while walking and just getting another quarter mile in.

That being said, sometimes you have to stop: fix blisters, potty, change shoes/socks or if you just can't move you sit down for an hour and hope you can start again. Tummy problems are the most common reason. Generally, people don't sleep though.

Just checkin' in. I was supposed to swim this morning, but we were flash flooded into our house. I'll try to pick up some points for us this afternoon, assuming the pool is open. (Why the heck would you close a pool for rain?!?!)

Good to have another Arizonan on the team, Billy. Maybe we'll cross paths at the Tucson Marathon. I'll either be watching or running on a relay team.

I had a rough weekend: I think I was overtrained or sick or something - major malaise and weakness. I even took Sunday off completely: a rarity for me.

I'm more or less back in business today. Still holding to the "no running until the medial tibialis clears up" thing though.

keriksen: how hot is it typically for the Tucson marathon?

kerickson - I'm U of A Class of '92. I'm beginning to think a marathon relay might be fun. I hope I will see you at the race and also see a race report from you if you decide on doing the relay.

Cheers,
Hippo, the start is actually up in the Foothills right around sunrise, so I think typical start temps are in the 30's. The course is down hill the whole way, and things heat up as the Sun beats down. Typical finishing temps are in the 60's.

Missed my swim yesterday do to weather, but I'm going to try to make it up today.

Billy, I'm a UofA grad student, hopefully class of 2008. I'll definitely write up a RR if I manage to recover reasonably well after my HM in Philly, and get team together for Tucson.
