Hubby and I are IN ... to celebrate New years and our 24th anniversary we registered tonight for the 50k and will plan to run it together in July (assuming his mom and my mom are not in need for us to stay back - they both have cancer they're now fighting :-( )

I had originally planned to sign on for the 50M but am much happier hubby is going to RUN it with me and we'll do the 50k and plan to have fun in the area for a few days before and/or after the race with the energy saved, so hopefully I'll get to take in the views I miss by not doing the 50M ;-)

I hope some of you are still planning to attend ... it'd be an awesome KR meet-up!

opinions based on experience, please ...

would it be better to go out early and acclimate to the altitude and enjoy Tahoe 4-5 days before the race and leave shortly after or better to arrive the day before and stay and be tourists AFTER?

the race is NOT a goal but would like to not die from altitude differences, and I've heard both that it's best to go days ahead and that that's a bad idea if you don't have at least a few weeks to do that ... what say the peanut gallery?

People are different - my wife for example feels ill, just being at altitude, with no exercising.

I did Tahoe after 3 days above 4000 ft. I have done mountain runs with just a few hours (and had a rough time of the run) - I have found with me, anything 24 hrs and above, I feel ok - sure, I am sucking wind on the climbs, but generally no real difficulty. But again, people react differently,

Don't worry about the altitude Sporti....I've experienced different effects from altitude on differing years.

Anything you've heard on "rules" to acclimating can go out the window. The usual dogma is that you arrive 2 days or 2 weeks prior to an event & that 1 week prior is the worst thing you could do. My buddy...Bruce Grant....has finished high up in Hardrock, Wasatch, & Leadville & in all cases he arrived the week prior....& he lives in Vancouver at sea level.

I wouldn't even worry about it....besides, you'll only be above 6500' for 3 to 4 hours. I'd worry more about losing luggage, or gambling adiction if I were you. ;)

ive done a bit of running and hiking out there including the TRT and some trails in that area including Mt Rose which is over 10,000' . I agree that peoples reactions to altitude will vary. i really didnt have a problem with it - but then again i was not "racing" per se ... so my effort was not max. i was able to run slowly and fast hike without a problem . Husband had a little difficulty the first day but was ok by 24 hrs. I am hoping to be there at least a couple days before the event in July. Im not planning any all out effort for the race so i hope to do some other stuff while there. Last time I did a really awesome trail called the Jones-White Trail. That might be one for you to check out while in the area .. the views were spectacular.

There is a lot of info out there on stuff to do to minimize the chance of altitude problems ... simple things like really making an effort to stay hydrated. i did an internet search before iwent and found it helpful.

You should train with more Balvenie... it closely simulates hypoxia.
