I want to hit a last long swim of 7100 meters (my current longest swim is 5000 meters) before my June 12th race. Anyone have any thoughts on whether I should do that two weeks or three weeks before the race? I'm figuring out the last bits of my training plan and that's my last big open item.

1-2 weeks, not 3. Since this is endurance stuff, I'm thinking 2.

If these super long ones are HARD on your, it goes further out. If you recover well, then closer.

For me, for example, I would probably be 1 week out. Because I recover really quickly on swim.

But for a marathon, I'd probably be 3 weeks out on my longest because I recover more slowly.

I like the thought of 2 much better than three. I'll probably aim for 7000 - 7500 two weeks out, and 5K one week out. thanks!

well I'm going the other way. I always put my longest 3 weeks out becuase (1) if you tweak a tendon it takes that time to come back (2) if you miss it you can still hit it 2 weeks out and be very very careful. In my worls 7500 is not so far but unless you are already comfortably doing 6500+ there's a small risk. I'd do the 7500 week 3, 6500 week 2, and then taper routine.

and a coworker asked me today if I was interested in a catalina channel crossing relay for next summer. I'm so tempted.

You want me to forward your question to my masters swim coach (who is preparing again to swim the English Channel this summer...weather did not cooperate last year)?

Also, since you're so tempted by the Catalina Channel relay, I have some books you might be interested in reading.

Also, also, check out this blog...

but I probably should lay out the rest of this training cycle before the race gets closer and I get crazier.
