....no, it wasn't a race. I just pretended "real good".

My time was 26:18. Not too shabby, eh?

Oh, and after I walked and rested and drank a bit of water, I ran some more. A recovery run of 3.5 miles, just under a 10ish pace. Time for some chocolate soy milk and a banana while I wait on hearing from my running partner. Can't believe she's still snoozing on a beautiful day like today!

Go racers!! Enjoy your Saturday, everyone, wherever it takes you.

OM - like Bill said; go find a race while you're in such good shape.

Hi 3j and dogs

8 moh this morning before sunup at 7:39 pace. Went to watch middle school and varsity h.s. XC meet. Mowed the yard.

Now I'm going to chillax and watch some football.

OM, well done! Good to have you back, JJJ. We could have ran on the trails together today. I did the same routine as last Saturday, Bluff Creek trails, then a shower & yoga at the northside Y. A little over an hour this time on the trails, compared to only about 53 minutes last time. I head back out on the roads in a while to finish up my 12 miles for the day.

Our teacher did a very cool thing, making sure we moved at our pace, and she was so happy watching us flow instead of getting in a workout with lots of chaturangas.

I am so proud of you OM. Great racing and a very nice decision on the cool down. What I think is helping you run so well right now is the quality and consistency of your core and flexibility work. It is a nice foundation for mileage growth and speed. It's fun watching you succeed.

No running for me today! I volunteered to be a course marshal at the Grapevine Club's 5k and 10k races. The Saint ran them both and got an AG 3rd in the 5k. I was proud of her for doing a double.

Opie, it's so nice to see you enjoying yoga class so much. I had thought of going to class early this morning, but then knew I'd be wishing I was out running the entire time, so I opted to follow my heart. I hope to get to class tomorrow, since I'm feeling it might be time for a day off again. We'll see.

Thanks so much for the kind words and encouragement, Ribs, but I think I just did a not-so-smart thing (SS, don't read this): After I came home feeling quite refreshed from that recovery run, I had my banana and chocolate soy milk... and THEN my running partner calls and says she's ready to go. Being the sap that I am, I say sure, I'll be right over! So yeah, yet another 3.5 mile recovery-type run, even slower this time (though just on pace for her). Nothing's hurting, but I worry about pressing my luck.

As for formal core and flexibility work, I'm really not doing anything these days, I have to admit. Well, nothing more than spontaneous kitchen-floor stretching and 24/7 core isometrics and alignment awareness. The latter of which, btw, if I didn't do, I wouldn't be able to reach overhead to put towels away in my linen closet, or even blow-dry my hair, without being in constant pain. This new running ability is seriously just bonus.

congrats to the saint for racing well, and to om for pretending to race well.

i aimed to race stupid today in our local 10miler, and i sure did.

plan was to stay on my nemesis's ass for as long as i could. she said she was going to run 6:24's for the first 5 and then try to bust 64, yeah, right!

mile 1 -- 6:15

mile 2 -- 6:17

mile 3 -- 6:14

mile 4 -- 6:11

mile 5 -- 6:43 (so here we are at 5 miles, faster than my time in last weekend's 5 mile race... stupid strategy is paying off!)

mile 6 -- 6:35 (one teammate who was pacing both of us decides to go up and get 2nd place master's, so he leaves us)

mile 7 -- 6:39 (my nemesis looks over and says "i need a bathroom really bad!" and then she drops the hammer. gets 20m lead on me, damn!)

mile 8 -- 6:36 (side stitch... it's been 7 years since i've had one of those, lost another 50m on my rival)

mile 9 -- 7:01 (struggle, nemesis disappearing in the distance...)

mile 10 -6:49 (passed by one guy here, rats...)

total was 65:20, 25th overall and 1st age group. maybe i could have run faster if i had run smarter, but it was a lot more fun running stupid. my nemesis ran 64:10, a new pr by 41 seconds, and got 2nd place woman overall. i lost 70 seconds on her in the last 3.5 miles... now that's stupid.

I had a nice, easy 12 mile run this morning around the lake. Hey Opie, to add extra miles to the loop, I ran below the dam and around the Bluff Creek Trails. First time running there, it was pretty nice with all the trees and such.

Have a great weekend.

Nice running OM, pretend or not, you're doing quite well in recent months.....in a real 5K you'd probably knock another minute of that.

Been gone for the last week or so, points south. Caught up with my buddy in between chemo treatments, so it was a good visit. Scouted out venues for two 50K races I'd like to try. Spent a night in DVNP (8000 ft.) & got snowed on. Lots of stuff to catch up on. Welcome back JJJ & belated congrats to ribs on his BQ marathon last week. More than impressive. Couldn't find bergers results though.

Took 9 days off running, problems with the IT band at knee. I always have this problem when running >20-24 miles or so. Don't know if it's my shoes or if I'm genetically predisposed to only run <20-24 miles pain free. Thinking about custom orthotics, maybe. Suggestions welcome.

4 miles in the woods.......(knee didn't hurt, so I'll try it again tomorrow)

Blimey MC, gutsy running, Look for the good, you have a good 5 miles in your legs and with better pacing an improved 10miler.

We have a cycle show in London this weekend so MrsG and I went along. They had a mini triathlon competition which we entered and both won our categories even finishing 1st and 2nd overall in our heat. Happy days as first prize is a free entry to one of the big triathlons next season :¬)

Also ran a 17.20 5km this morning for 2nd place(1st AG). Things are looking up indeed

Impressive nemisis mc - nice job yourself. I say the running stupid was probably nice for a change of pace!

Nice imaginary 5K OM! So, maybe a turkey day race or something . . .

Doubles for the Saint - impressive.

Darn dog JJJ.

First race for the year for me . . . 13.1 miles today. Trained for the full with lower back and foot issues, so decided to run the 1/2 instead on just pure distance running and not really any speed work, so I was happy with the result. 1:39:38. Back and foot sore now, so I will take a few days off and continue working core and planking away.

I did get to see Gin today. She did awesome. My cousin's girlfriend said Gin's hair looked perfect after Gin ran today. To look so good after running! Me, I'm usually a salt encrusted sweat ball . . .

Like Johnny said OM, a real 5K race will easily knock time off that. Nice running!

Congrats to the Saint, Ribs!

Super stupid running, MC! Congrats on the hardware!

The finale of the 5-race 5 Peaks series was today, with distances of ~5K, 13.9K. I've been running the longer races (10K+) and sat in first place in the series standings before starting today...... only due to the fact that the woman that consistently beats me had only ran three of the previous 4 races. Championship standings are based on the best 4 of the five races, so Catherine needed to be there today to claim first place. I won't call her my nemesis... that would assume I was close enough behind her to even dream of catching her. Nobody else had enough races or was close enough in points to me to overtake me today... I had at least 2nd in the bag, and Catherine would have had to finish at least 3 places back for me to beat her outright... and that wasn't going to happen. I don't see her before the race, but with 650 people in the race, I often miss her until we get to the podium at the end.

It was a gorgeous day for racing, cool and sunny. I started at the back of the third wave and settled into an easy pace early. The traffic on the early single track was pretty heavy, making it hard to see where your foot placement would be as we were tightly bunched for the first couple of K. At about 3K, I caught my toe on a root as I started down a twisty incline, but got my feet back under me before just I face-planted.... that would have hurt! A couple of K later, I wrenched the bad knee a bit, not too bad, but certainly a warning that healing was far from done.

After the 5K runners pealed off for the finish, there was plenty of room to stretch out, and I found myself in a mental battle..... this race doesn't mean anything to me in the points standing... why push the knee... you really don't want to RUN that hill, do you... I was psyching myself out.

This is not good, I'm thinking, so I started to concentrate on a quote off Facebook on I<3 to Run that caught my eye recently..."Your biggest challenge isn't someone else. It's the ache in your lungs and the burning in your legs, and the voice inside you that yells 'CAN'T", but you don't listen. You just push harder. And then you hear the voice whisper 'can'. And you discover that the person you thought you were is no match for the one you really are."

So I pushed harder, thinking that maybe if Catherine isn't here today, nevermind the series, maybe I can win my AG in this race. So I start to target runners ahead to pass... the guy in the purple shorts, the guy in the yellow shirt. 10K marker.... why does my Garmin say only 5.8 miles? More rolling hills thru the forest, nobody near me. Hello..... there's only 2 miles left? 2 miles has been my magic distance.. I get to the point where there are 2 miles left and I think "hell, anyone can run 2 more miles!". So I started running up all the hills, seeing a guy up in front that I know, but have never come close to beating... hmm, I'm running well, so maybe today? I'm getting closer, but suddenly the trail dipped into a sharp rocky descent and dumped us back out into main fiield.... only 300 m from the finish. Ok, I don't catch him, but have plenty left for a really strong kick for the timing mats. Whoo, feeling good!!!!

2nd AG for the race.

It's a great day to be a runner. Congrats to all who raced stupid or otherwise. I expect only smart racing tomorrow at Royal Vic. Paul, I was at Bluff Creek at 7:45 a.m. We should have worked out the logistics-that's a long ways down from the Lake Hefner dam! I just did another 6.06 miles in the heat for a couple of reasons: 1) to prep for AZ and 2) we have a wedding to go to (younger coworkers have been getting married lately). It's 87 here & 84 in Fountain Hills, AZ so close enough. I didn't get in the 12 miles on the plan today-my foot wasn't exactly cooperating-but ended up with 10.79 and a lot of time on my feet.

Nobody can do stupid like you mc. I'm taking notes on how to get myself out of my self-made box and run stupid for a breakthrough race next Saturday.

Lots of great reports - isn't Autumn running wonderful??

I ran a new route today. It was HILLY with one nice 1 mile long hill that stretched from the 1.0 mile mark to the 2.0 mile mark, and that wound up being the fastest part of the run, the only sub 8:00 portion of the workout. 1/2 mile up (70 foot climb) 1/2 mile down (70 foot descent). OK it wasn't Pike's Peak but I'm stepping out of my flat mindset. 4.8 miles in 39:24, 8:12 pace.

Wow, it is indeed a great day to be a Masters Runner and/or Racer! Such impressiveness abounds!

congrats Heme on that beautiful well earned plaque! and no one can run quite as stupid as Mcsolar and still win his AG. Nice job!

I had a 10K this morning. It's my 10K PR course, but had no plans of bettering that today. I haven't been doing any kind of speedwork or tempo runs and in fact, not even running a whole lot - usually just under the 20 mpw mark - except for this week where i had already run 20 miles before today's race.

Last night I was thinking this was a 9 a.m. start, until I get on Facebook and see in my event reminders that it starts at 8:30. okay, glad I saw that or I would have shown up just as the race was starting. Last night, I got my stuff together and checked my garmin to make sure I had enough battery power. I did. okay, I'm set. Get up this a.m., get ready, glance at my garmin and see the "battery low" warning. crap, I forgot to turn OFF the garmin last night.

okay, i'm cool with this. I'm running for fun today. I'll see a few friends, see several of the kids from running camp this past summer. I'm just going to have fun. Even though i have my timex I make up my mind that I won't look at it, not even a peek. I'm only going to run by feel.

I get to the race and realize I forgot my water at home. great, now I have no water either. I find a friend there who has an unopened bottle in her car, so i sip on that before the race. whew.

race starts and most run the 5K, so the crowd is real sparse by the time the 5Kers turn around. I'm just running by feel and actually feeling pretty darn good today. The air is cool and there is dampness in the air from the previous night's rain. I'm passing more runners than are passing me for miles 2-4. by the time I hit mile 4 I start thinking about my time. I can tell I'm running along at a pretty good clip and I'll be really mad at myself if I don't push it and end up missing a new PR by a matter of seconds, so I decide I can push it for the next couple miles. I pass 6 runners and pass 3 people on the last "who-the-he!!-thinks-a-hill-this-size-in-the-last-1/2-mile-of-the-race-is-a-good-idea" hill. That has me fired up. I run as strong as I can to the finish and see my time of 52:06 as I cross! (new PR by 21 seconds, but still only good enough for 5th AG )

I guess I should run without a garmin more often.

Trail marathon. This time I actually did some good training for it. The spaghetti feed was good with a nice 3 piece folk band playing.

Weather was cool at the start but did get warm. Despite being on a wooded trail there was a nice breeze in my face. Slept in the car, which went sorta ok. Woke up on time and was one of the first to the bus pickup. Reached the starting line with an hour and 20 minutes to go. Nearly first in line for the portapotty, I had remembered to bring everything and it was looking like a good day. BSd with a couple of runners. One was a preacher named dave who knew Bjorklund and Shorter and had served in Iraq. Final prep went well and I toed the line.

My pr was 4:06, but thought I had sub 4 for sure and maybe a 3:55 in me, maybe even a 3:50 if everything was perfect.

Off we go. The first mile is a paved road with one small hill, marker 1 in 8:15. Maybe too fast but it was effortless. Miles 2 and 3 had some downhill, they went in 8:06, 9:09. Yikes again, but still no strain. So I threw the expectations out the window and ran what felt right. Miles 4,5,6, in 8:22, 8:18, 8:18. I did the first 3 miles without my mp3 player as a safety precaution, fumbled with it during mile 4, got it on, good to go. Miles are still fast but effortless.

Miles 7,8,9 in 8:25, 8:35, 8:17. Still good. Miles 10,11,12 in 8:31, 8:07, 8:39. Mile 11 had some downhill and I slowed going through the waterstops at 10 and 12. Mile 13 in 8:41, first half in 1:49:37. Things are going way way way better than I expected. Worked on maintaining form and try to stay steady on the pace. Miles 14,15,16 in 8:34, 8:26, 8:47. I took my G1, ibuprofen, and finished off the licorice during mile 14. At the rest of the aid stations I would grab a cup of poweraid and a cup of water, drink the poweraid, about half the water, and pour the rest over my head. I am now falling into the pace I was originally targeting. The 2:14:29 is an all time pr for 16 miles and I would set a new all time pr for every mile to the end.

Miles 17,18,19 in 8:39, 8:42, 8:47. It was getting warm, I had slowed a little but still going strong. Miles 20, 21, 22 in 8:52, 8:39, 8:56. I was slowing more and could have kicked it down but decided not to risk blowing up. I was passed about the same number of people that were passing me. In my last 3 marathon I was running about 9:30 pace for the last 8 miles and I usually passed 10 to 20 runners and maybe 1 would pass me. But at this pace I am among people who can actually run. I maintain for 2 more miles.

Miles 23, 23 in 9:11, 9:07. The left hip and quad are definetely complaining, but I hold it together and start to kick down. From here to the end I pass about 20 runners and nobody passes me.

Miles 25,26 in 8:45, 8:23 with 1:29 for the last .2. The last .2 was under 7:30 pace and about 20 yards from the finish I caught one last runner with a hard sprint. My watch says 3:43:58, a PR of over 22 minutes. This goes with PRs for 5k, 10k, 30k, and 20 miles that I had set during training. In the first weekend of taper I had missed a half marathon PR by 26 seconds, so I felt that this was the best training I had ever done and a smart run would be a guarenteed PR, and it was, and ran the entire distance without walking a single time. Usually I bonk or lock up a knee at mile 19.

Splits were 1:49:37,1:54:21. My 11th and 22nd fastest half marathons. The 30k time of 2:37 is 3 minute pr over a 1 minute pr I ran last month.

Recovering. Some stiffness in the legs, nothing serious. I am contemplating a 50k trail run next weekend.

Good runs everybody.
