Good luck to KS running the marathon this morning. There are 29 marathons listed this week in the U.S.

Fantastic race OM!! Go run a 5k and smash your pr now.

I took another trip yesterday to the hills of West Virginia for a 20k trail race. It was smaller than the half I ran a couple weeks ago with 36 runners finishing compared to 177. The race was at a huge campground where most of the campers were built in to stay year around. They even had an area people built houses so kind of a gated community. I got there a little early, signed up and had a chance to drive around a little. The race started and I counted runners to keep track of what place I was in. At one point early, I was in 11th. I got around a couple runners pretty quickly as we made our way to the dam. We headed into the woods where the whole race was on rocky single track trail. I kept passing runners for the first 3 miles until I moved into 5th place. At that point, I ended up not seeing another runner for about an hour. We ran uphill from about 3 miles to 6 miles where it leveled out a little. We also had a section through a grove of pine trees. The pine covered trail was a relief from dodging rocks but there were a lot of turns you really had to concentrate on to stay on the trail. Once out of the pines, we headed straight down the hill mostly on rock covered trail sometimes through a few inches of water running off the top of the hill. I only had one fall until about 10 minutes to the finish when I did a faceplant cutting my nose and knee. It's the first time in 30 years I fell so fast I had no chance to catch myself. I got up and started running again and a short time later finally saw another runner. Hoping he was getting tired, I picked up the pace up a hill but after a couple minutes I wasn't catching him anymore and now I was starting to get tired. I cruised into the finish in 1:36:00 in 5th place overall. I moved up to 1st in my AG when another runner my age was 2nd overall.

This race was very similar to the race I did a couple weeks ago as I ran virtually the same pace. The difference was that it wasn't quite as hilly (1 big up/down compared to 2) but it was all on rocky single track compared to some small portions of the other race on asphalt and fire roads. It got mentally exhausting watching every step for over an hour and a half. My foot held up real well as I could always feel a little pain but it never affected my pace. I finally isolated the pain and did a little self diagnoses on the internet. Good chance I have sesamoidiitis that is an inflammation of the sesamoid bones (actually the tendons around them) between the big toe and ball of foot. I am going to try to cut the running down to a couple times a week and see if it will eventually go away without totally stopping running. Off to the fitness center for an eliptical workout this morning.

Excellent racing, Rip!

It makes my heart sing to hear how well Baba is coming back and for HappyFeat's fast finish yesterday!

Terrific 15K race yesterday, OM! Yes, I think you do have much faster 5Ks in you!

Like Erika, I was on a cutback week between 20 milers, but it was also the opening weekend for the trail series I've been doing for the last 6 seasons. So I just had to race, of course.

There were 3 race distances offered yesterday, the shorter two (~6K and ~12K) of which are carried through the remaining races and count towards series point, plus a half marathon, which is only run at this venue. I'd checked out the fields in the two longer races and found that the woman who has consistently beat me since I'd hit the 50-59AG had finally succumbed to the knee injury that plagued her through last season and had not signed up for anything, but another very fast woman had signed up for the half. I originally signed up for the 12K, and figured I'd do an easy run to make up to the 16 miles in my schedule, but felt so good after my 20 last weekend that I contacted the RD and upgraded to the half.

My training partner and I got to the race venue well ahead of the half start, which was a full hour ahead of the other two races. The original course had us running the 12K course, then heading through another part of the conservation area for the remaining 9K. But with the heavy rain, the park staff had closed out all but the 6K loop in the upper forest, so all of the races were to run the same trails, with the half doing a smaller, very hilly loop at the start to make up for the extra distance. That meant we would be part of the way thru the second loop when they "released the hounds" and the speedsters for the 6 and 12K overran us. With the course alternating with multiple sections of single and double track, it was going to make for some dicy passing situations.

There were only ~60 people racing the half, and I could see that most of them much younger than me, so I started the race near the back of the pack. To my dismay, after the first small loop, for the first time ever, found myself completely DFL. OK, I should be treating this as a training run anyway, and surely many went out too fast. I was able to hang on to the back of the pack and chatted briefly with a couple of runners I caught up with. The single track was twisty, rooty and rocky, but only a couple of the hills were steep enough to walk. By the end of the first loop, I'd passed 2 or 3. On the second loop, I settled into a comfortable pace.... thinking "training run, training run...." and managed to pass a couple more. We came to a clearing where I noticed a couple of runners stopping ahead...... deer were grazing not 100 feet from the trail..... OK, that was worth slowing down to see. Back into the single track and then the 6K and 12K leaders started to overtake us. "On your left, on your left......." was much of what I heard for the next loop. I'd lost track of who ahead of me was in the half. Then about a 3rd of the way through the last loop, I spotted a woman in a red shirt way up ahead that I'd remembered from the start, and put a bead on her. Not in my age group, but it gave me something to shoot for as the 12K folks continued to stream by me.

With about 4K to go I decided to start pushing it a bit. I blew through the aid station with about 2.5K left, seeing a couple of other blue bibs stopping for water. Red shirt girl was closer... I was now keeping up with the 12K runners around me and gaining ground on my target. Down the last steep rocky slope and on to the grass for the last quarter mile to the finish... I still had a good kick left and passed her with about 100 yards to go! Whoot!

I ended up 2/3 in my AG, with 2:17:00 for the run, but like Rip, the woman who beat me in the AG took 2nd overall, so I was awarded 1st AG. 51/63 overall.

I'll take it....

Rest today!

Nice race Heme

I have also been in that "training" pace mode until I see a runner I think I can catch. Of course these two races are the longest I have run this year at one time so I didn't want to chance blowing up. I wasn't able to catch that runner yesterday like you. It was a 13 year old who I think had a lot left at the end as he beat me by 1:10 and I know I was much closer at one point until he saw me.

Great racing going on!

We kicked a$$ & took names. With a time of 3:33:29, we got 1/8 Mixed Masters, 3rd overall Masters, and 45/735 all relay teams! Crazy weather but who cares. Driving home I saw hail on the side of the road like it had snowed a little. Luckily we were done running before that came down.
