9-11. A day that will forever remain in our memories.

Basic daily run today. Not feeling too bad from the race. I don't do many 5Ks and don't train specifically for them at all. Considering I've done 4 races in the last month and the shortest was 10 miles, I was happy with my time yesterday. I do so many longer races I just don't know if it would be worth it to do some specific training for a faster 5K. 15 mile trail race next weekend.

Warm/low 60s - Sunny and calm. Crawford/Puckett/Security/Kiva/Fontaine/Grinnell/Crawford/Upton/home. Short slow easy effort. Minor soreness from the race. Stretching afterward.

A wonderful day today! Did the Pacific Coast Duathlon in honor of Gustav. Originally registered for the tri but switched yesterday and it was a good decision. We did run 1 on the beach, starting from a line drawn in the sand by the RD's heel (pretty darn funny) - not really sure of the distance but it was tough running in loose sand! 12 mile bike was rolling and challenging. Run 2 was part on bike path, a little on trail. Had my best sprint tri run time to date (25:20) and was happy with that. Finish time was I think 1:21 or so...good enough for 2nd in my AG! Yahoo! (ok, so there were only 4 people in my AG but still.....).

Have a great day everyone!

Edit: Forgot to add this...they had a heroes division of the race - police and fire fighters - in honor of 9-11. Two of the fire fighters did the run in full gear carrying flags. Just amazing!!

Yes indeed, Don. Reflective and emotional morning - as I'm sure it was for all of us.

35 mile ride. First in a week ... Another bad week last week (weather, and still sick - despite a round of anti-bios ... back to the Dr. on Monday).

Nice job Jen!

Didn't sleep a wink last night in anticipation of 15 miles this morning...so I listened to my gut (and Thor's voice in my head) and made a choice. I went out for a fast 5 miles, my leg felt achy but not painful for the first time all week and I told DH that I'm NOT running the marathon next month. This is now the 3rd full I've registered for and not completed...time to listen to Don and JR and focus on shorter distances that I can and WANT to do. Liberated.

Sparty - sometimes you have to have the head override the heart. That distance may just not be right for you for now and I'm glad you made the decision and feel good about it, because it tells me it was the right choice. No worries, there are other races other days. Forcing the long stuff when it's not in the cards = disaster waiting to happen. P.s. please call my office manager and tell her to bag her upcoming marathon, because she is in your same shoes - except in total denial. *sigh*

PF flaring a bit this evening, not a good sign, we'll see what the night has in store for me. Thought I had this flare up put out, maybe not. Maybe another runless week. Boo.

Awesome Jen! With Tammy's & Matt's performances yesterday and yours today, Team LIT is cleaning up!

Sparty - No shame in bagging. I was in your shoes 6 months ago, made my choice, and I don't regret it. We need to remember that we don't need to go long to be real. Rock on girl!

Had an awesome day really!

Up a bit before 5am to head out to volunteer at an all women's tri.

Arrived just before 6am and helped out first with body marking (even marked a "V" for volunteer on my calf!) and then with direction and policing in the transition area until about 11:15am. Race bibs had American flags on them and everyone was focused on the flag during the Star Spangled Banner. A couple of highlights: Noticed a woman arriving with her bike after everyone was getting instructions before the swim start. Asked her if she was just arriving & she said that she was & still needed her packet. I sent her to get her packet while I took her bike to the bike in. Got her marked & took her to her spot. Turns out, her car had broken down on her way & she'd had to call her mom to help her get there! Kudos for not totally panicking and still arriving to race! Luckily, this was not her first tri and she was in the last wave. Also, the arrival of the last cyclist, long after everyone else & escorted by police with siren & lights. Whooped up the crowd big time for her!

Then, local pond association's 5K run fundraiser.

DH was head of registration. Arrived before noon & hung out (race @ 1pm with a Moment of Silence first). Ran a course/5K PR in 27:20 by my watch (8:49/mi)! Course was flat/up hill/rolling/flat/up hill/down hill/rolling/down hill/flat. Previous 5K PR was on 2/1/09 in [F.L.A.T.] Lowell and was 27:34, 8:53/mi.

Hung out after my run & then helped with clean up. Left about 3pm-ish. Shower & snack & walked the dogs. Dinner gathering to re-cap race & hang out with the other volunteers at 5pm. Boat ride across Dudley Pond back home ~7:30pm. Lovely full moon!

Fell asleep thinking about how fortunate I am to be alive, to be active, to be able to "give back" to the sport, and to be apart of some really great communities both online and offline!

Sparty: Liberated. Keyword of the day. If that feels so right, then the decision was even more right! The marathon will always be there. Don't force it. If the lure is too great, and if it is in your blood, you will be back. If not, do as hobey has and let it go. No harm when you live to enjoy. There are plenty of challenges elsewhere.

4 mile run in White Plains, NY -- was there overnight for a 100th birthday party on my wife's side of the family. A quarter mile into my run I saw an American flag in the dirt on the side of the road. I immediately stopped, brushed it off, and tucked it in my shorts so that if flapped in the wind behind me as I ran faster and faster. A lot of honks and waves to honor an unforgettable day. We were bonded by purpose. Saluted a fire truck and got back a wondrous air horn musical in the name of patriotism. We remembered, for we could never forget. Upon finishing the run, I climbed on top bulldozer in a nearby construction site and mounted the flag on top of the roof.

I got in a nice 5ish miles in the am, had to wear a light long sleeve shirt, and then did a little bike with the mrs. slow first 1/2 then pushed up the hill home as she drove. It was rough, as I definately on't have my bike legs under me, despite trainer rides.

Awww Sparty...I totally understand having just gone through a similar experience with yesterday's race. It's really hard when you sign up for something and have that goal in sight, then realize for whatever reason it's not going to work out. I think it's safe to say all of us around here have high expectations of ourselves when it comes to training and racing, and I firmly believe that the moments that challenge us the most will make us stronger in the long run. I'm sure it was really hard to make that decision...but if your immediate reaction was to feel liberated, then you absolutely made the right move. You have a LOT of races in your future...this is just one moment in a lifetime journey of racing. Good for you for doing what ultimately felt best. Hugs!!!
