Today was scheduled for a 20 mile training LR. I got a break as the weather was/is very nice - 65 degrees at 5:00 AM.

The plan was for a Pfitz-style progression LR of 20 miles altogether. I ran the 1st 8 miles really easy at 10:00 min/mile pace. Then picked it up every so slightly for the next 5 miles at 9:35. Finally, for the last 7 miles, I started at 9:14 and worked it down to 8:44 by the end.

Those last 7 are terribly encouraging as I didn't feel I was going all that quickly. Never looked at the Garmin once. This was all by feel.

breger, great progression run. Negative splits are awesome aren't they? And way to not use the Garmin and just go by feel. Another convert.

I did my 4 mile hill run:

Felt great, even sprinted at the end, and could have easily kept going. But I know these old legs well, and a short run today is for the best.

Have a great Sunday, everyone!

Millbot, I take back what I said. You don't look like Kevin Bacon...you look like his baby brother! (And we've been cutting you slack so long, what's another 0.2 years.)

Nice run beerger!

Enough procrastination - time to work on my taxes.

My DH and I had a great dinner at fjordrunner's house last night. Our lovely friend is doing well, but extremely busy with work and planning her DD's wedding. She sent her love to you all. I have pictures of our get-together I will post later after I return from church.

6 miles this morning, thus ending this week with a 60 miles week- a PR week for the butterfly lady. My legs were definitely tired today after the 21 miler on Friday and the 6 six miles I did yesterday. So I ditched the planned interval run and just made it an EZE run instead. Since I will have only 2 weeks to taper, I figured it is more important to stay injury free and not push my luck.
Now....let Taper time begging. . Wenatchee Marathon...my butterfly wings are ready for you

Excellent LR, Benger. It's always a good sign when you can finish a run strong like that and nail the progression pace by feel.

ks, did I read correctly that you did 25 yesterday? Yowza.

I already knew FF is really in her 20s, and I'm glad to see the millbot is aging gracefully too. Of course 40 will probably hit him like a ton of bricks.

Today I did something completely new for me, an indoor triathlon. This was a low-key event at our local YMCA, sponsored by the Ann Arbor Triathlon Club. Maybe 50 competitors total. Unlike an outdoor event, this one was divided into three 15 minute segments, with your "score" determined by your total distance in the swim + bike + run. I ran a reasonably hard 20-miler yesterday, and was feeling it this morning, so I just wanted to use it as a recovery and cross-training exercise. Except of course that I am incapable of taking it easy when anything competitive is on the line.

I started in a "wave" with three other competitors. Since you cover the least distance in the swim anyway, it made strategic sense to take it fairly easy in the swim, kill myself on the bike, then get whatever I could out of the run.
Swim: 850 yards in 15 minutes (for the Pro, that's 1:45 per 100 yards). Swim Coach Bethany was counting laps, which gave me extra motivation to relax and concentrate on form.
T1: We had 5 min to get upstairs to the spinning studio. I sproinged out of the water, jogged to the locker room and changed quickly. No child-shoving was necessary.
Bike: 4.37 miles in 15 minutes, whatever that means. Counterintuitively, you can increase the distance at a given rpm by increasing the resistance setting. I tried to keep the cadence at 80-85rpm, and in the last minute or so I lowered the resistance and upped the cadence to facilitate the transition to the run. Very tired at the end of this.
T2: We had a luxurious 5 minutes before the run, considering that all we had do to was walk about 20 yards to the TM. I drank some water, stretched, did some easy walking on the TM. By the time we were ready to start my legs were sort of working again.
Run: 2.24 miles in 15 min, 6:42/mile. Definitely feeling the bike and yesterday's LR, but happy with the pace. Cranked up the TM and finished at sub-6:00 pace for the last minute.

I cooled down with about 2 easy miles on the indoor track. When I left, I was 2nd overall out of about 20 finishers so far, but the person ahead of me was another guy in my AG, so no soup for me. Hey, speaking of soup, I'm hungry now.

Everyone enjoy the rest of the weekend.

21.41 miles on the Boston Marathon route this morning. My last long run before the big event! I fully expected to feel much more sluggish than last week, this run being the culmination of a 56-mile week--most mileage ever! Nonetheless, I still managed it in 3:08:00, for an average pace of 8:46.

It was still mighty chilly out: 24 degrees, with a windchill of 14. So I'm going to call this one as "more miles than degrees". Watch, it will be 70 degrees and sunny on April 21, and I won't have a lick of heat acclimation...

Hi everyone.
I walked 1 mile as a w/u & c/d, and ran 3.25 miles.

Had a good 20 minute stretch & it felt wonderful!

I was hoping to get DH out on the Appalachian Trail for 2 or 3 miles ez hiking (he's recovering from pneumonia) but I don't think he's up to it. Oh well, it's better for him not to push it too soon.

Nice runs and a tri today, folks!

Robin, I wonder if we crossed paths. I did the Boston route today too. 21.23 miles in 3:05:20 (8:44 pace). Boy, that last hill hurt though. Ended up walking for about 2 minutes to get my HR down. I'm glad that's over. Now for some taper...

Gin, I looked for your electric yellow jersey but didn't see it (you). I hope you had a good run. The weather didn't seem so bad after all, yes?

CassadAAve - A mini-triathlon following a fast 20-miler. Wow!

Robin, congrats on your longest mileage week ever. Have a good taper.

Same to you mari, WTG on the 60 miles.

Another rest day for me. I'm still limited by my podiatrist to 25-30 miles per week (I will be until May...), and I've already done 28.5 this week, so no run for me.

Hi Kicksters! Some nice runs today.

Thanks Mariposai. Everything is going really well. Since getting off the fence everything seems to be going smoothley. Everything is being readied for Kay down in the Salt Lake city by her daughters and they will be moving her down there in about a month. I think what is helpful is that there is no anger or bitterness, nor regret. I feel privaledged that I was able to be useful for my very best friend in the world though I know now that I am probably in the way and that we are doing the best thing possible for everyone including me now. The thing that I am not crazy about but her daughters insisted because they fear that I would rescue her someday is to divource her. How do you do this without percieved malise? I know they need this control and it will make it easier to get funding for her but still it just doesn't set well with me.

Hi all!

'Just back from my 20 mile training run on the Boston course. I am soooo happy with this run! I wish today was the day.....definately had another 6 in me. 2:52....8:37 pace. If I can do this race day I will be thrilled.

irunmike.....the club we went with got a late start. We didn't start until 9:10. I'm sure you and Robin were long gone by then. But I did wear the yellow top, just in case. Not too chilly once you got a couple miles in.

Robin, I sure hope your wrong about the weather. The first year (2004) I ran Boston it was 85 degrees!!!! That was when the start was at 12:00.

I couldn't get over the amount of people out running! Very cool! And I finally saw the Johnny Kelly statue. But no wonder I've never seen it while running. It is sort of hidden. Funny how different the course looked without the crowds. No Bon Jovi at mile 13.1 and no college crowds but fun, fun fun!

finished my first and only 20 miler in prep for Boston...this was the longest I've run continuously since 2006, I think.

Goal was to keep it easy for the first half, ideally nice and relaxed and then start to visualize the race in Boston. Push slowly on the way back and then hold it steady for the 2 hilly miles before pushing for home the last 2 miles.
I envision the course in Beantown to be divided up into 4 parts-
the first 8 miles,
the next 8 miles
5 hilly miles
and the final 5.2 miles

so I ran this run today with visualization:
the first 8 miles
the next 8 miles
2 hilly miles
and the final 2 miles
--------------------------------------------------------

started slowly and settled into a pace, body feels good. Stay relaxed and smooth. Conserve energy, the race is long. Pick up the turnover on the downhills so as to minimize landing shock, but don't pick up the pace yet. Stay back...Glide through the first 8 miles in 1:11 (8:53 pace=goalMP+~18%, right on target for today). Grab a gel, gatorade and shot blocks.

I start to pick it up ever so slightly. Lots of runners out today on the course. I smile and wave to many. Still feeling good but a little tightness here and there. Keep the turnover. Focus on hitting the splits and getting to mile 16. More sports beans/fluids etc. So far, so good. Check out the girls at Wellesley...woohoo...
Next 8 miles in 1:06 (8:15pace=goalMP+~10%, again right on target).

Body feels a bit tired, but I've got a lot left. (Refueling is helping this run, as I don't use gels/fluids often in training.) Time to start up the hills. Push the effort slightly but ignore the pace. Keep the turnover high and lean into the hill a bit. Grind, grind each mile...Heartbreak is nothing! There's the waterstop at mile '20'. Hi everybody! (2 miles at 8:33 up the hills-~100 feet each, =goalMP+14%, it is what it is...).

Time to push home to Boston! Pick it up-keep the knees high. Stride comfortable and long. I am strong. I will be ok. Turn the corner and there's Boyleston street...(Last 2 miles 7:45, 7:32=goalMP+~2%)...

http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/?r=1741800
-----------------------------------------------------

Hey, I'm back home in CT! Well, that was cool. Time=2:49:30, about 8:29 pace.
I'm ready.

Nice LR's by the Boston crowd so far. Keep 'em coming.
Enjoy the day, people.

Larry, good luck to you. That divorce requirement sounds unusually cruel to me. You are her husband after all, not some random boyfriend or whatever. Perhaps some more talk is needed.

(But of course none of this is any of my business at all. You certainly have been a Saint about Kay.)
