Well nothing yet. Work until noon, then I get to head over to my sister's college and visit her for a while. Definitely going for a run there and am excited since it's one of the colleges I'm interested in.

Have a great April Fool's Day and make sure you pull a prank on someone.

I *was* going to post that this morning I'd

run a 1/2 mary

and finished

without any portostops

but decided that was too cruel of a joke to play on my kickrunning cyber buddies

Truthfully, I did legwork and core today: full squats/millions of walking lunges/single-legged squats/etc etc etc etc and a bunch of gut work.
Not much time to talk...eating then I will be on my way to Eau Claire. My sister said it's really nice there so hopefully that means it's not raining like it is here. Oh well, I don't think I'd mind it too much, the new scenery should keep me well occupied.

Hope the race went well EQ!!!

See ya later!

Ran 'virtually' along with Meri today at the Fool's Fat Ass 50km. It was the first FA that I created and led. We joined along with the local Sunday trail group from the local running store.

A mild 55F and steady rain at 7am start. The rain stopped in 2nd hour, but by this time we were drenched with wet feet.

31.5 trail miles in the Cuyahoga Valley National Park. Crunningman from IN came out to train with me. 11 starters, 3 runners finished 50k or more. The majority of runners stopped after 15.75 miles.

The course was a 12.5 mile & 3.25 mile loop of some of my favorite trails in the area: Ledges overlook (rock formations), Cross country trail (open meadows) and the Salt Run trail (my fave.)

All done twice. 5hrs 50min total time. (Ran for about 5:25; with about 25min of waiting, eating, and gear changing.)

Nutrition-wise, I consumed 4x 20oz bottles of Ultra beverage, 1x bottle of Amino drink, 1 pkg Clif Blocks, 2 gels, and 4 S!-caps.

Now less than two weeks to go to race day--time to taper the volume.

Looking forward to reports from EQ and Meri.

GREAT BAY HALF-MARATHON.

I ran the inaugural Great Bay Half Marathon this morning in Newmarket, NH. A slower friend had talked me into doing this race. This was going to be his first 1/2 marathon.

My friend wanted to run a 9 minute mile average. I decided for the first 3 miles to stay with him, and try to help him find that pace. The first mile was slowed due to the pack. We made up for some of that on mile 2, and at mile 3 I had him right at the 9 minute mile pace. He said to me "I'm all set. I feel the pace. If you want to pick it up, go ahead."

I picked the pace up after that, and was passing runners fairly frequently.

The course itself was a nice. The first 3 miles were on narrow country roads. Then, there was a 2 mile or so segment on dirt road, then the rest was on country roads back to the finish. In terms of hills, there were many short and sometimes steep hills on the course.

The hills were a great opportunity for me to pass runners, and passed several on each steep hill.

I would say that for an inaugural event, they organization was pretty good. They could have used sports drink on the course. Also, I missed 3, count 'em, 3 mile markers on the course. I never saw them. I don't know if I just missed them, or they weren't there. Not sure about them.

I didn't part-take in the food afterwards other than a banana and a bottle of water. Not sure if they had any good stuff inside.

It was a pretty course, and I felt good, but one thing was crystal clear after the race, I am not in race shape. I have some work to do.

For those of you who came over from the CH, I had a very nice surprise today. I got to see the lovely and talented AmericanIdiot. It was great to see her.

Impressive people! I had a leisurely stroll around the neighborhood once I escaped from the house. It was nice to get outside and clear my mind a bit. A little over 30 minutes total.

Great report EQ, and good of you to be there for your friend.

Okay, the good, the bad and the ugly. And I mean very ugly.

The good first.

17 miles with 14 at or better than Marathon Pace. All on a treadmill with an incline of 1.5%. 2:18:30.

The bad next.

Blood. Copious amounts of it all over my shoes. Bandaids on the nips came off and I didn't feel it. I looked like something from Grindhouse.

The ugly now.

I ran fine. I pushed it to the end, the last two miles were tough but more in terms of energy. HR was steady throughout the whole run... not ugly that.

But I couldn't walk when I finished. I mean that. I could not walk.

There was nobody in the gym. I crawled to a place where I could stretch. My hip hurt, couldn't move my right leg to walk. Hurt isn't the right word. It was weak and sore, and walking was painful, but I can't seem to find the stretch that will make it sore. Everything about my legs below the hip is fine.

It took me half an hour to hobble to the car on a route that takes 5 minutes tops. It was that ugly.

Got home okay, another 5 minutes from the garage. Managed to take 3 Advil and now I'm just "slow". I can't reiterate enough... everything else is fine. There's a bit of a sore spot at the top of my right butt cheek that if I press it I feel it, but that's it.

I felt sore on Friday and so took Saturday off. Tomorrow is an off day. I'm going to see about getting a massage for the right hip - butt area.

I'm not going to hyperventilate or overreact about this, but *shit* is all I'm thinking right now.

decide to stop whining about not being able to run and rode my bike with DH over to the bike shop to ride with the group. DH just "rides" me over there, because I'm very nervous about being able to ride with bikers/and tri people. He tells me they ride about 40 miles, slow. The first 20 miles were okay and then we ran over some glass and had to stop due to 2 blowouts.

The temps were in the 40s (30s with windchill) and then it started to rain. And the more miserable the group got the faster they started to ride to get home. Did I mention 20-30 mph winds??? The last stretch, we get the tailwind and they are cranking so hard I can't maintain contact, because they all drove to the store and I still have 5 miles to go and alone.
I get home and I'm so numb I can't get off my bike almost fall over. I make it indoors where DH help me strip off 3 layers of clothe. I strip and head upstairs with a hot shower on my mind and I can't walk the stairs because my legs are shaking so I try crawling but my hands are numb from wearing mittens instead of padded gloves (I have a tribike not a road bike, thus imagine holding my weight up on my palms for 3 hours). So I'm crawling on my elbows and it becomes so funny, I can't stop laughing.

The shower was NOT funny, however. ouch. So, I get out of my 1/2 hour long shower and there is a message from a member of the bike club saying I did good At one point, the bike shop owner was taking pics and I said, "good, I'll need proof".

Grizzly -

Take care of yourself. Sounds like you had a great effort out there today, but dang, it sounds like a lot of pain. Get better soon!

My official results from the HM are in:

Officially:

347 out of 1237 finishers
36 out of 93 finishers in M3539 age group.
Time: 1:48:48
Pace: 8:19

As for my friend:

955 out of 1237 finishers
56 out of 66 in M3034
Time: 2:14:36
Pace: 10:17

I think his effort was remarkable considering he had never gone over 10.5 miles before, and that was on a treadmill.

Griz-

Two guesses:

Piriformis- butt pain from hamstring attachment. Due to tight hamstrings or tight calves. Sitting would hurt (like a mutha' if this is the culprit)

or--It sounds like you need to stretch (and strengthen later) your IT band. Maybe you can google for stretches, I only know about the roller ball stretch. SOL if you don't have the foam roller. At the gym, try the machine that works you abductor/adductor muscles.

I haven't been posting in this thread much since the VRAA started, but I was so pleased with my run today, I couldn't resist.

Despite a nasty chest cold, I decided to hop on the treadmill and see if I could run a few miles b/w coughing fits. No coughing while running (that comes AFTER), so I decided to run 5. And all the while, I just stared longingly out the window at the gorgeous afternoon.

So I finished my run, went back up to our apt, and recruited my husband to come out with me to get some more miles in. We went to my usual path by the beach and ran another 4 in the gorgeous evening, then walked 1.

Not only did I get 10 miles in today (the most I've done since ITBS started) but my husband ran 4, which is a really good accomplishment for him.

Hey Grizzy - I use athletic tape - Stays on better. You are beaten and bruised as a run like this can do. I know fox-runr will disagree, but I find 1% plenty to equate to outside. 1.5% was a little punishing.

Recover and take care of yourself - Treadmills can be great to zone in on a pace, but they can also be brutal on your body. I usually end up doing these runs at the track - Setting up cups of h20 and gatorade to grab etc. -

Do you have any more of these mean ones left before the marathon?

I've got a couple of VO2 max workouts, and an easy 20 miler. But that was the worst of it. Some "races" that are optional.

treadmills are actually kinder to your landing joints, however, when you are landing the same exact way stride after stride, some muscles are not used at all. When you go outside there are many more muscles in the legs and especially the feet that need to be used in order to maintain an upright position. So although the treadmill is a great tool, especially if you have an impact injury, it can also lead to muscle imbalances very easily if you are never asking some muscles (mainly abductor/adductor and any muscles and tendons in the foot ankle) to work.
