In 1968, the US Army killed 300-500 noncombatants in My Lai in Vietnam. Pretty sad story. The platoon leader, William Calley really came out ahead in the whole ordeal. After being found guilty of all kinds of stuff he served very little time in jail. After he got out he made lots and lots of money speaking on the college lecture circuit. He also rubbed the nose of the Army in it by settling down in Columbus, GA where he managed a jewelry store. He is now in Alanta.

When I was in Officer Advanced Course at Fort Benning in 1997 we had a lecture by a guy who was on the court martial. This guy was mentally thrashed from the whole affair. It made me chuckle to see a Colonel who didn't have the mental strength to handle his job. I was surprised he hadn't yet ate a bullet over it. He went on a huge harangue about it-'We are not allowed to say how we voted, but if it went my way Calley would not be alive today'.

Nice 7.5 mile run in exactly an hour today. Best run in a couple weeks, so that is nice.

Also, I signed up for a local sprint in May, and my name just hit the starter list: (Verein is club)

Name Startn. Stadt Verein
Kaiser, James (USA) M 1971 Ludwigsburg Team L.I.T.

Rough day for me. Planned 17milers including 14 at MP. I knew it would be very challenging based on the way I was dragging my body for the last few days. Sure enough, after a warmup and way-too-fast 7:50 1st mile, I died quickly and sturuggled just to move forward so I bagged it after 12 miles. I knew this was coming..it was just a matter of time... I have been putting 3 strength/power/tempo trainer sessions a week plus solid swimming 3/wk. Resuming a marathon training on top of all this is too much for me. Yet, it was certainly confidence shuttering run. 4 weeks to go to a marathon I was thinking to do. Will see....

I feel this pain. I was in the exact same position couple weeks ago. In my case, I had a great long run, but it pretty much sent me over the edge. I let the marathon go because it was at best a C race.

Jim, thanks for sharing your experience. Good thing that you knew the marathon was a C race. I have to sit down with myself and think about what I *really* want in 2008. (I think I know the answer, but too much fun, too little time...)

Yo Sake - Sometimes they're just bad runs. Shake it off.

Me... Early run, late report.

Up 40 minutes early as my automatic-synchronized-atomic-never-wrong alarm clock malfunctioned. What's up with that?

10.2m run with The Diesel - her longest since the arm injury. She pushed through it - I liked the easy pace. This was week 2 of my testing of wine tasting parties as a carbo loading mechanism. I think I can conclude from last Sunday's pounding head (too much red) and this week's unscheduled trip into the woods (too many rich snacks) that the wine tastings are not the way to go and I'll revert to the more traditional spaghetti dinner.

Do what you know is right tri-peeps!

Hmm... I'm in the same boat trying to figure out exactly I want for the 2008 season. ANd to think, if my coach would have let me do Last Chance, none of this would have happened. (slipped on a training run that morning, the begining of the stress fracture).

Early morning swim. Had to wait for them to unlock the door at the gym. Wanted to be sure I could get a lane and finish before the 8am class kicked me out. As it turned out, I was the only one in the fishbowl and there was no 8am class... WU 300, MS 100, 200, 300, 400, 400, 300, 200, 100, CD 300. 1:05.

Came home and picked up son and we headed out for a bike ride. Rode in the usual direction, except on the other side of the river. Outbound with a headwind, inbound with a wonderful tailwind! 36.6m, 2:25, 15.1mph.

This is a good point. My post may have seemed a little negative. A lot more went into my decision than just the couple days of bad runs following a long run. After a bad week, I had to travel for a week, my biking was falling behind, etc. etc. I decided to quit fussing about it.

Better runs ahead for you Yoshiko. Sometimes it's just hard to get tired legs going. Like you said, you saw it coming, so you know the signs.

Swim/bike with the tri club. 2000-meter swim and 45-min spin indoors. We're finally getting outside for a ride next week. Can't wait.

7.3mi LSD followed immediately by 25min of yoga stretches. Despite having a wicked cold and all the knee problems I've been complaining about it was a surprisingly good run. I just kept the pace very easy and thought about form (move forward not up) and before I knew it the run was done. I took planned 90sec walk breaks at 25min and 50min and carried my fuel belt which I never do. The sun even tried to come out a couple of times. I really enjoyed it. I think just planning to take it easy made all the difference.

Short swim for me today.
But like it happened in my last sessions, I feel it getting better and better. I did, for the first time a 14 strokes length!! I wasn't sure if I counted right, so I counted again on the way back, and it was 15... so I guess I was right the first time.
Also did 4x100, at about 1:44, wasn't expecting to maintain the same pace through all of them.. then 4x50 at 45-46s, also surprisingly good for me.

Still hoping spring will eventually come. It was quite springy yesterday, but I took a rest day. And I'm saying what I'm saying every Sunday: this week I really have to start training more seriously. Well, this week at least I trained for 5:50, which is my longest week this year (but far from what I should be doing).

My older daughter is having a St. Patty's day party and we have 5 screaming (and so far only one crying) 10 year old girls over. On top of that, my younger daughter has a friend over so she doesn't feel left out. So the walls of our house are shaking, from noise, or probably fear.

I needed a few moments of escape, so it's up to the multi-sport forum. Ahhh.

Anyway, 15 minutes of rowing followed by 90 minutes of spinning, with 30 of that at LT (3x10 minutes with long rest intervals).

Long day that went very, very fast. Too busy for more chatter, will catch up later.

Me...

30K (18.5 mile) Run to the Beach organized training run from North Andover to Salisbury, a course made popular years ago from the infamous Johnny Kelly. This is an organized training run I've always wanted to do, so I passed word around and quickly found two stablemates, one of which wanted a pacer. So that's what I did on this quite challenging course. Lot of very long climbs. Only one or two steeper ones, but still, there were no short hills. So paced the Seabuiscut through 10 miles @ an avg of, maybe, 7:30-:40's. Picked up the Warden's Husband at just after 8. He hung on for those two quick miles before we stopped at 10 to refill and head back out again, this time at 8:00 minute miles, which honestly is quite impressive on such a hilly course. We continued at that pace until 1.5 miles left when I got the go ahead to pull ahead to punch on to what ended with a 5:47 last mile. Very, very fun time. Followed by a few well-earned beers. But the best part is that the Seabuiscut held oh-so-very strong and seemed comfortable in holding an aggressive pace. Well done. And thanks to the Warden's Husband for pulling it all off and driving us back to the start.

Great workouts today from all...
