Alex and Richard-- Ouch that is cold. I remember growing up in Wyoming and it would get that cold, but not here in Utah. Keep Warm!! No running for me as I need the rest from my 8 mile run yesterday. As I run that far more often I think my body will adjust to the longer distance. Have a great day everyone.

Looks like we're starting with weather conditions, so I'll add mine! 19* with windchill 0*. Winds sustainded 31mph, gusting to 43mph. But, at least it's sunny!

Out the door by 7:30 to beat the clipper blowing in later. 25* when I left, so not bad. Same route as last week, but winds were certainly a factor today. This is a loop route. Only one road in to this 'country club' neighborhood, although I cut through on a bike path. Every time I bike or run through, there are cops on patrol. Weird... Outbound wasn't bad, but inbound at one point I had to walk about a quarter mile because running I wasn't getting anywhere! 4mins slower than last week, but I'll take it. Wind and yesterday's ride were certainly a factor. 8.76m, 1:19, 9:05pace

Then for a ride. I was hoping that it would still be warm enough for a road ride. Certainly warm enough, but the winds were too much. So, I sat on the trainer and went nowhere... 45mins.

Shopping later today. Hope I don't get blown away!

Wow - Richard, Alex, stay warm! As in, don't go outside! Lol.

kfuller - Have a nice rest day. Glad to see you getting a longer run in there yesterday.

mom - As usual, nice getting it done.

me - Good news!!! I am feeling 100% today. But--going to wait until at least tomorrow, maybe even the next day, to get back to it. The last time I ran was on Wednesday, so if I'm away from running until this Wednesday that will only be a week. And at this point I'd rather err on the side of caution.

Meeting with my coach this afternoon, whenever that is. I am heading off to the gym here in a bit to do the elliptical machine. Again. So be back later with that information.

Have a good day everyone, and try not to get frostbite! (8 here with -5 WC)

It is way too frigid where some of you are. Good call to stay in.

The wind seems to be everywhere. 40 mph steady gusting here. No thanks!

Tonya -- glad you're feeling better.

I'm meeting a friend at 1:30 at the Y. First up, she is going to help me get some pictures for the Team Boomer (charity I am supporting) web site. The organization sent me a couple singlets to wear, size M and size S. I actually think an XS would be best in this cut. I have found that no singlet on earth seems to fit my body, but I'll make it work.

I will do 6 miles after that on the 'mill while my friend does her C to 5K run/walk. My quads are pretty sore from weights on Friday still, so I will make myself keep it very easy. I expect the recovery jog will help with the achiness.

I had planned on a recovery run today but I feel like I've been hit by a truck. We shall see.

Well unfortunately I don't have any good news to report today. I ended up making an unplanned emergency trip to the doctor yesterday morning, and he confirmed that I in fact have a severely pinched Sciatic nerve, which is affecting both my lower right back and my right leg. I should be able to start running again in a couple weeks but for now I am on the shelf. Apparently this usually only takes a couple days to heal, but I did some extra damage by trying to run on Friday, so it could take 2-6 weeks to be fully healed. Doc offered 600 mg painkillers but I said I'd rather go with taking 1 or 2 Advils whenever I'm feeling bad instead (I HATE painkillers).

So this is rather depressing. I suppose it could be much worse, but it certainly is very painful. I cannot walk more than 20 yards without ending up in a lot of pain, so I am not going to be stupid and push this at all. I am canceling the race I have set up in the first week of March, and the Shamrock Shuffle is up in the air too. I love running and everything, but this is something I've never experienced before, and I NEVER want to go through this again. It sucks! I was walking to this coffee shop right now and a guy with a CANE was walking faster than I was. Great.......

Nirvana-- Get better soon.

Sorry for all the cold weather in the Midwest. It is suppose to be mid 40's today. I hope it is warm like this tomorrow when I am running. Everyone have a great run, rest or whatever you decide to do today.

I pinched my sciatic nerve when i was about 21-22ish...and it has just(7 years later) now got to where it does not hurt constantly(still hurts when it gets really cold, like today)...take it easy...I walked with a cane off and on for 3 years...never more than a week at a time, but if you don't let it heal completely (which i did not) it can cause long term pain. Be careful friend, I hope you feel better. Do what the doctor says and you will recover fine.

Richard, Alex and Kfuller- Enjoy the break from running.

Tonya- I definately think you're playing it smart here. Too many times over the years as an athlete I have let my passion for the sport (either gymnastics or track) over take sensibility and have trained through injuries/over tiredness and made things worse for myself. The week of cross training will only make you stronger once you return to training. Boston is still more than 2 months away and your base thus far is extremely strong!

Nirvana- Very sorry to hear about your back. Although I've never suffered from sciatica, I have back pain on and off from the years of gymnastics so I know how annoying it can be. You, like Tonya, have built a solid foundation that shouldn't be too hampered by taking time off. Best of luck to you in a speedy recovery!

SGH- In response to your post yesterday about the school work... I think it's one of those things that you hate when you're doing it but miss it incredibly once its over (kinda like running ) My research paper for my Neuromuscular Aspects class is on current research in strength training for Children and Adolescents. It's very interesting! Enjoy your 6.

4boys- 7:30 on a Sunday... you're my idol!

As for me, I'm heading out for either 9 or 10 depending on how my foot feels. Weather.com said it was supposed to be overcast and cold here in NY but it's in the 40s and sunny. WOo hoo!

Run strong, all!

Nirvana--heal up!!! I had a baby sit on my sciatic nerve. One day I went for a walk at lunchtime, thinking that would help. Nope. Got out there and then almost couldn't get back to my office! My leg was almost totally paralyzed.

Nirvana - Take the Painkillers! I hate them too, but I found out they help reduce the inflammation! As long as it is rubbing against the bone, it doesn't heal. I have had the same problem with a sciatic nerve and it didn't get better until I bit the bullet and took the meds. It was gone in 3 days after I was suffering for weeks!

Well, wind seems to be everywhere today. At least the wind here didn't kick up until I was nearing the end of my run. I started out at 7 for a quick 30 minute run to get some extra miles in before the 16 mile group run started at 7:30. I don't know if it was the fast 3 miles before I started or just the dynamics of running in a group, but I completed 19.3 miles today in 2:51:37, 8:54 pace. If I can do that after a 10 miler yesterday, I hope I can maintain 9 mm for a marathon in 2 weeks!

For those of you in the north country - turn up the heaters! I have to spend the next week in Minneapolis. My brother has the dome running program and I may have to spend Tuesday and Thursday running around the metrodome!

Tonya - good job on staying off the legs. I know it is frustrating, but it's better to start up again after a week than to end up with a persistent problem that ends up lasting months.

Run Well!

Hi all,

Taking it easy today. Normally I have indoor soccer on Sunday evenings, but there is no game for our team this week. We have a bye. So I think I will take today as my weekly off-day instead of tomorrow.

Stay warm out there, those suffering with the cold. Not too cold here but quite windy.

Nirv - sorry to hear the news

Tonya - hope the meeting w/ the coach goes well.

RA - enjoy the recovery day, you've earned it.

Liz - good luck with the long run.

Enjoy the rest of Sunday, everyone.

trecker- great job with that mileage and at 8:54 pace?! That's awesome.

CMJhawk- enjoy your easy day.

So warm and sunny turned into cloudy and windy (40mph winds it said when I got in). Felt like I was running in place at one point. Finished with 9.02 in 1:10:54, for a 7:52min/mile avg. Legs are definately feeling it now.

Have a great evening everyone!

Sounds like this has turned into the bad weather and injury thread. Sorry to hear that everyone.

Feeling a little guilty about the weather here in California, mid 60's, sunny, no wind - I think I actually got a little sunburned today - to put it in persepctive, it's 120 degrees warmer than Alex reported......

Sunday is my long run day, which was a 21 miler at 8:00 pace up & down thru the hills, with the last 3 at low 7's.

Pizza for lunch with the kids and now it's a lazy Sunday afternoon.
