I plan on starting off the summer by taking a group of students up Half Dome in June.

The best time is to do it as early as possible, it starts to get crowded by 11am. Even then the hard part is going back down with everyone coming up. I always go to the outside of the cables and by pass the crowd, but I don't recommend it unless you are an experieced rock climber. If you are starting the hike from the valley floor leave at 5am. If you are camping at Little Yosemite Valley..well you get a head start.
There is a great online video at the Yosemite site.

I was almost born there but I was a month late. Went back in '73 with the Coast Guard. Alaska is awsome...be carful of the bears...they are bigger and meaner than their cousins in the Sierras and they don't back down. Forget pepper spray,(to be PC incorrect) hope someone has a 10 guage loaded with slugs just in case.

We did will. The fatality was a couple of days before I went up the cables, apparently there was a some hail and rain and someone went off when the people were being turned back. It is not a particulary difficult or dangerous climb, but some people have no experience on the rock and freak...It is a National Park not a theme park!...Waterfalls and cliffs are very real dangers...get some education or training. Of course I'm the idiot on the outside of the cables in the second shot...but of course I do have some training and experience. Often the people on the cables freeze up causing a lot of congestion, It is easier, faster and safe for me to go up the outside. If there are any rock climbers out there I would rate it a 5.2 or 5.3 run out smear if it were a route.
