1) Singing accents. Why does anyone who sings country have to have a twang? Really? Some guy from Northern Alberta singing country with a whine and twaaaaang to sound authentic, but why? Same question on hip-hop. Everyone has to sound like they are from the hood? Really?

2) I know that there are remakes of rock and pop songs into country versions, heck there's even a bluegrass version of "The Wall", but has anyone ever done it the other way? Why?

3) Does hypnosis really do anything? Oby was brought up on stage as part of a Terry Stokes show. I think it's all hocum and the power of suggestion on an accommodating group of people who, because they are going to be "hypnotized" have license to do silly things. Oby's take, he was aware all the time and went along because the suggestions seemed emminently reasonable to him at the time. Hmmmm.

4) Why the hell aren't there more front porches on modern homes? I know I've harped on this before, but the Show Home that is being raffled off at Stampede has an "outside" living room that is really a porch but it is walled off from the rest of the world. Wrong.

To answer #4. No one uses front porches. People drive up, use an automatic door opener, drives in, shut the door and goes inside. Never to make contact with any neighbors. Neighbors here have the most spectacular "outdoor living space"--out back. With privacy fences. We have a "front porch". It's pretty worthless. I've tried putting a chair out there but it gets in the way of using the front door, which pretty much defeats the purpose.

I really, really, really miss the front porch that we had at the old house. The neighborhood was built in the 1920's. Nice deep porch running the entire length of the house. I had a porch swing. The hours I spent out there. Many nights swinging with a fussy baby. Read books there during nap time. We'd sit out there in the evening and talk to neighbors who were out walking. I almost think it would have been worth it to fix that house up rather than move to a newer neighborhood.

I think front porches are still used quite a bit in the South.

Why do you park on a driveway and drive on a parkway?

Why do you play at a recital and recite at a play?

Even though we live in a contemporary ranch, I wish I had a BIG wrap-around country or cabin porch to follow the shade around the house on the HHH days instead of sitting inside with the a/c running.

(not that I want to stare at the cars going down the street in our residential area...but...you get the idea)

In New England, Front porches are for decorations... unless you live way the heck off the road then you can sit out there and keep to yourself. No one who is from here uses the front ..except maybe on Halloween. The farmer's porches always seem to be on the side of the house. I want a porch but it would be out back where all our main doors are.....

Hypnosis.. I think it works.

Accents are what we expect so it is what we get. I mean, if you had a NASCAR driver who sounded like he went to Harvard, would you think he was any good? Naw.

Re # 2). Why it's not done more, I don't know why. But it is done. Couple examples - Johnny Cash's Ring of Fire has been covered by Frank Zappa, the Animals (as in Eric Burdon and ...), and Social Distortion. I've heard only the last one, and it's pretty respectful (considering SD is punk) to the original.

And my favorite cover - Rhinestone Cowboy. The only song to be covered by both Johnny Carson and Radiohead.

I heard the Radiohead one a week or so ago and thought: "Y'know, that kinda sounds like 'All Apologies'"

I never minded cars going by. Ours was the widest street and the only one with no stop signs, so we had more traffic than any others. The street was far enough from the house htat you didn't feel like you were sitting on the median. Yet, the sidewalk was close enough to chat with neighbors walking by. I really do miss that.

Well, Whitney Houston turned a perfectly sweet Dolly Parton song into an overcooked diva ballad. Does that count?

#2 - Johnny Cash covering NIN "Hurt". Did he make it country? Not sure. But it's awesome.

Once Johnny Cash covers you song, it's not yours anymore

Speaking of Dolly, White Stripes did "Jolene"
