The what Swim Type Thread go me thinking. I found this article on Swim Smooth. http://www.swimsmooth.com/slowsr_adv.html about increasing stroke rate to get better time by increasing stroke rate. It has a video example and rate vs time calculator. You can drop 4 minutes of 1500 meter swim by bumping your stroke rate up.

I will be working on increasing my stroke rate.

Kinda reads like an advertisment. There is some truth to this though. For a long time I had followed the TI swimming stuff and I did get faster to a point; and then i took it too far and slowed way down. I know I CAN swim at 9 strokes/ length in a 25yd pool but I will slow way down if I do, for me 11.5-12 is about the perfect timing for me and It is interesting about how in open water the pros tend to speed up their strokes. I hadn't really thought about it but when I'm swimming in chop I do too. Interesting things to think about...

I think what this swim smooth site is advocating is a balance.

TI focuses tons on stroke length, but if you talk to swim coaches who've been in the business for years and years, they balance stroke length with turnover to get a maximum speed.

I like the graph that shows the relationship between the two.......that speed is a result of efficient but quick stroking...to a point.

Just like you have some runners who have to lengthen their strides to have a more efficient run, others need to shorten their strides.

So, if you do too much of one over the other, you'll eventually suffer from the imbalance. You have to find your "sweet spot" between the two.

And, I imagine, (don't know for sure) that for people who have large wingspans (e.g. Michael Phelps) will have a very different optimum stroke rate than a smaller swimmer. So, the calculus numbers geeks can chew on that to see if there's an optimal stroke rate x desired speed x wingspan in inches.

I'm one of those "large wingspan" people you are right on the money... To fast for me is probably just right for someone much smaller. Just like you said with the running comment it's probably a lot like "overstriding" with your arms. I know I did that a lot for awhile and until I discovered I was over reaching I had no clue as to why my shoulders hurt all the time!
