I'd like to get the bonus points for stretching, but beyond what I normally do after running, I'm not sure what else to do. I'd love to do yoga, but I don't have any routines, etc. What are you all doing for 15 minutes of stretching on your own?

Thanks!

These are some good stretches. I did these after my dreadmill run at the gym today.

And I downloaded Kimberly Fowler's 15 Minute Yoga for Runners onto my iPod.

I do the same stretches I used to do way back in HS/college soccer PLUS [and this it where it becomes "Punk Yoga"] anything I can find on Yoga Journal that works ... "works" means:

1) "Can I remember to do it?"

2) "Does it fit in with what I already do?" ... which helps with #1

3) "Does it make a difference?" meaning "failing #1 AND #2, did I notice?"

I'm doing a little Pilates stuff...mostly to STRENGTHEN...

Also, sometimes, if I remember, I do some stretches from that Bob Anderson book.

Yeah, those are the usual stretches I do after running. It's only about 5 minutes, though.... I will look for that yoga download. I have an ipod so that would be cool. :)

Randy, I'll check out the website. I'm like you- it has to be simple and something I can do without too much guidance!

TechTee- I used to do pilates at my old gym that had classes. My new gym doesn't offer them anymore. :( I love pilates, though! It really helped with flexibility.

Hold your stretches for 30 seconds or longer....repeat several times...for example, the hamstring stretch my PT gave me is 30 seconds per leg, repeat 5 times--5 minutes for just one body part...

Incorporate stretching into other activities, i.e. stretch while you are on the computer or other office work, watching TV, standing in line at the store...instead of sitting on a chair while you are typing, stand up and put your leg up on the chair to stretch hamstrings, etc.

I think if you're getting those stretches done in 5 minutes you're not holding them long enough to get the most benefit. It's like brushing your teeth in 5 seconds, you're not doing it long enough to really get the job done.

I can do stretching on my own but sometimes I just like the yoga download telling me what to do so I don't have to put any thought into it.

Just so I'm clear, does Pilates count toward the stretching bonus? As a certified Pilates instructor, I vote no (but it's not my decision). Pilates is about strengthening the core and aligning the spine more than anything. Yes, you do get some stretching benefit from a Pilates workout, but it's not designed to be a flexibility workout.

Just my 2 cents.

This is a good point - I agree that Pilates is more stregthening than stretching. As TechTee mentioned it's being done mostly to strengthen so it should not count toward the 15 minutes of stretching + bonus.

I hope that clears things up.
