Stonewall Jackson 20 mi Ambulance Run Report

Oct 6th, 7:15am
Garmin time: 3:35:23 for 20.31mi, Chip time: 3:35:21
128 out of 165, 5th in AG

Morning started out pretty early b/c we had to drive about 70 min to get to the race and pick up our packets once we got there. The ride was uneventful but fun as Michael, Taciana(Ieathillsformeals) and I chit chatted. We got to the place in time but not with tons of extra time. We head to the bathroom line and then we find out that the start is about ¼ mile away and they’ve already done the first warning call. So the 3 of us hurry to the start and are there just a few minutes before starting. By this point, I’m more than a bit nervous. This is a hilly course with a strict 4 hour cut off time and under 200 runners. It’s not the kind of race that a lot of people just decide to wing. I’m equally freaked about being last and being pulled by the police escort, lol.

We start off (uphill of course) and Michael and I are running about a 10:20 pace and are getting passed by hordes of people. Ok not too comforting. The humidity which was also a big fear of mine is high but it’s not real hot so I didn’t find it too bad. We finally kind of fall into place with a couple that are running about our pace sometimes we’d pass them and then they’d pass us a little later. Everyone we met was really friendly which was great as we rolled up and up the hills. There would be some slight down hills or some flatter areas but then we’d be going up again. We knew the “monster hill” was right about mile 10 so we were just trying to maintain our pace. Little by little there was a larger gap between us and the couple we had been running with as we forged ahead. Lots of people were stopping to walk up the hills so we kept on passing them. Finally we get to mile 10 and start going up the hill and then it’s mile 11 and we’re still going up and now it’s mile 12 and there’s someone on the side cheering and I say “please tell me this hill will end soon?”, nope about another ½ mile!!

We knew that was the worst of it so now we had to just keep plugging along. Michael was starting to feel crappy in his kidneys and lower back so he fell back to spend some quality time at the next water/Gatorade stop. I went ahead and although I didn’t come across tons of people, I eventually passed everyone that I came upon. I really liked passing the guys b/c it made me feel stronger than I really felt. There were tons of water stops and tons of volunteers as we were on a fairly hilly windy road. It was kind of misting the whole time and cloudy which I loved. It was beautiful running through the state park part but there was supposed to be a lot of history behind this run and I don’t recall noticing any major sites??

I was so happy to finally hit mile 17 on the Garmin but still didn’t hit the mile marker for a while. The next volunteer explained that they couldn’t really set up the finish line at the 20 mark so they moved it to 20.3. Yeah whatever!! Finally I was so close and boys were my legs tired. I go down a street and the volunteer says “just go up this hill and turn to the left and you’ll see the finish”. This hill was like a trail covered in large rocks, wtf?!! But I thought for sure the camera guy would be lurking so I couldn’t walk, lol. Finally I did see the finish and Taciana there waiting for me and I sped up the best I could and tried to smile for the pictures. In the end it seems that there may not have been a photographer so I’m glad Ty took tons of pics which she’ll send me when she gets home.

Michael was about 4 minutes behind me which was awesome considering how bad he felt. As we waited for him, I sat in the grass to stretch where a giant spider was that made me move faster than I thought I could after the race, lol. Taciana was busy chatting with her new friend, the handsome volunteer at the finish that couldn’t seem to take his eyes off her!! Yummy! We got our medals and had some post race refreshments and socialized. Taciana also met up with a man who’s done Umstead a few times and is training for the 100 there so they had lots to talk about. Eventually we headed home, where we stopped for some lunch and hooked up with part of my training team that had done their 20 back in Richmond.

Alright thanks for listening, I really don’t feel too bad right now (can’t imagine running 6 more but still not too bad). I’d definitely run it again though.

Sounds like a pretty cool race there, and congratulations on a fine effort - I'd say things are looking good for your marathon in Richmond.
