No worries about the zero mileage, RIL. You certainly earned a rest week after Eugene.

It was a recovery week for me too, post Broad Street. I'm trying to get back in the swing this week but an unfortunate event is intervening...DW's grandmother passed away yesterday and I have to head off to Oregon tomorrow for the rest of the week. I'll try to get the runs in while I'm there, but that's obviously not going to be top priority, more like get them in if/when I can.

North Face is on 6/5 and that's the next target. I had a nice 5 mile trail run last night to formally kick off training for NF.

Last week:

M 5/2 - rest, just a 1.25M walk at lunchtime

Tu 5/3 - 4.5M easy trail run

W 5/4 - 6.25M easy progression run (10:00 --> 7:08/mile pace), 30 mins weights after

Th 5/5 - 6.1M easy recovery pace run

F 5/6 - 5.6M super easy run at lunch, 2.5M walk in evening

Sa 5/7 - 30 miles road cycling

Su 5/8 - soccer match, played 75 mins (although half of that was in goal, so not much running).

22 miles total

Dittos on having earned the rest, Runninlaw, and great that you are signed up for Chicago. I'm going to know a lot of people running it this year, I'll have to do some serious spectating. Hawk, after North Face, I count you'll be 18 weeks out already. It'l be cool to see what your guys training plans are like.

For me, I like signing up and then getting to taper right away :) The week went like so:

I am off tomorrow night to NY, and driving out to the Poconos with my dad Saturday afternoon. He's running the 5k that starts at the finish line around a half hour after the marathon start. I am just thinking of this as a nice, long training run, really looking forward to just going out there with no goals and just running 26.2 miles.

Hawk - so sorry to hear about your wife's grandmother. I hope you have a nice time in Oregon visiting with family though. There certainly could be worse places to have to go to fit in a run or two. ;)

Zrun - good luck (not that you'll need it). I'll have to check out the race website to see if they have athlete tracking. What is your goal?

I went out for my first run this morning since Eugene (other than running with my Girls on the Run girls). Slow and easy and simply fabulous. It was mid 50s and just nice to be out running.

Runninlaw - way to go on the first run back. That weather sounds really nice, hope it's the same for the Green Bay marathon sunday, I know a couple of folks running that one. I doubt they have tracking for the Poconos since it is a small race. I wonder if there's an app that lets people track you in races from your phone. No goals for me, just finishing marathon number ten. I steadfastly refuse to throw any numbers out there and really don't even have in my head.

Hawk - my condolences as well; hope the travel is going smoothly and that you can get some runs in in Oregon

Runninlaw - You deserve a break, but let's not make this a habit, OK?

My week:

Mo - 6 @ ~9:30
Tu - 8.5 including 7 x 1 @ 6:40 with 3:00 rest
We - 6 @ ~9:30 ???? (think I did this and didn't write it down)
Th - 6.1 @ 8:43
Fr - rest
Sa - 6' wup, 10k in 40:20, 2' cdn

Su - 9 on trail

Week: 42.6

10k was strange. Pretty calm wind and a super flat course, but the race started a little late (~7:45) and it was 59 degrees and full sun on exposed airfield at 8am which is a little warm for my Swedish blood. There were no mile markers until mile 5, so I went by the garmin. I was about 6:23 at 1st mile and then slowed to 6:27 overall by mile 5 (6:26 is 40-minute pace). There was a big gap in front of me so I was running alone and having to yell to volunteers to find out which way to go as they were turned around directing the 5k runners who started 10 minutes later. One pointed me the wrong way and I had to turn around when they yelled after me -- only lost ~5 seconds though -- but it was around mile 5. I hit the lap button at mile 5 finally (the first with a mile marker) and saw ~6:45 pace -- which I hadn't done that. I was shocked though when the clock said 39:44 when I crossed. I quick look at the watch showed 40:20 though and that's how it ended up in the results.

I was 7th overall though (out of 185), so I was surprised when they didn't call my name in the 35-39 age group awards and then again surprised when I was first 40-44 (since I'm 39). It's a triathlon club, so apparently they were using tri rules (age at end of year). A guy came up to my after the race and said I had a good run and said it was good to see another guy like him up there in front. "You know, usually it's those skinny guys up front." Um, I could stand to lose a few pounds, but ...

I honestly think I could have broken 40 if it were cooler, but hard to complain. I really wanted to get the asterisk off my sub-40, but it will probably have to wait until the fall. Maybe I can knock some time off my dusty 19:49 5k PR. I was thinking of driving to Richmond for the Carytown 10k on Sunday (great race -- did it last year and met Bill Rodgers there), but it's forecast to by 69 at 8am with possible thunderstorms, so no point.
