Hi all: I hope you all are surviving the snow! We have another big storm headed our way, so it looks like lots of miles to be run on the treadmill! All of you down south and out west - enjoy your nice temps for the rest of us!

Good week for me:

M: rest / abs

T: 7 (9:03) / abs

W: 10.4 (8:59) / abs

R: 5 recovery (9:30) / arms & abs

F: 11.2 (8:56) - outside! :)

Sa: 7.4 recovery (9:36) / arms

Su: 17 (9:15) / abs / 2 miles on new bike trainer

Total: 58

I did not get my tempo run in for a variety of reasons, but I was really happy to have a bit of a bump in mileage. Given I am loosely following Pftiz 18/55, I'd say 58 miles isn't too shabby. :) I got a bike trainer this week and am hoping to get more cycling in for cross training - even if it is only 30 minutes or so a few times a week.

I hope all of you with achy parts are feeling better this week!

T - Rest

W - 5 easy

Th - 5.5, including 10 x .25 @ 90 sec

F - Rest

Sa - 14

Su - 5.7 (outside)

Total for the week: 35.7

Hey all,

It's a new week and that's good for me because it means the old one is over.

By now many of you know my epic tale from Wednesday night. I was ensnared in the worst weather related gridlock ever in the Nation's Capital and my normally 30 minute drive home became a 9-hour odyssey, only to get home to a house with no power. The whole sordid affair is still being talked about in these parts and probably will for years. Anyway thanks to weather complications I missed 3 straight days of running last week, but tried my best to recover with some semblance of decent mileage. I even considered jumping into an indoor track meet on Sunday but in the end thought better of it as my legs were tired from the previous day's long trail run in the snow, and quite frankly I was still a bit mentally wiped out from the stress of the midweek. I am convinced bagging the meet was the right decision.

More dicey weather may be headed here this week, although the big Groundhog Day storm looks likely to miss us. Fine with me. I'm hoping to get back on track with the training.

Looks like the race calendar is filling up nicely. I may yet add one more to my docket. There's a new HM in early June, in the rural outskirts of Lessburg VA, about 45 minutes from where I live, called the Wine Country Half Marathon. Officially the race is sold out, but they've set up a waiting list. Nothing to lose, but the $5 waiting list fee (which I think is kinda bogus, but oh well). Looks like a very scenic course, and you can't beat a post-race party at a winery. So what the heck...

RIL - green with envy about your bike trainer. I so miss cycling in the winter. DW bought me some winter riding gear at Xmas to try and get me out there but with the snow lately it's been out of the question to even attempt that.

Week in review:

M 1/24 - 7.6 mile progression run, averaged right around MP for whole thing

T 1/25 - planned rest day

W 1/26 - unplanned "rest" day (due to snow related lunacy)

T 1/27 - unplanned rest day (snow related recovery -- shoveling, retrieving abandoned automobiles, etc.)

F 1/28 - 7.7 mile easy run on TM

S 1/29 - 12 mile trail run on compacted snow/ice

S 1/30 - 5.6 mile easy trail run with DW, still snowy but warmer/slushier (bagged track meet and did this run instead)

Total miles - 32.8

Have a great training week and think spring! If we all do maybe it will come sooner?

Hmm, I already posted, and it got lost... time to retype.

Great week for me: new high training mileage again, and best of all, nothing feels like it's about to break. I just hope I can hold on to this.

M: 6 recovery

Tu: 11 w/ 5 progression (2 HM, 2 LT, 1 fast): 6:42, 6:42, 6:28, 6:28, 6:15

W: 15

Th: 7 recovery

F: 13

Sa: 8 w/ strides

Su: 20

Total: 80

This next week will be interesting; I'll have to juggle the schedule somehow to accommodate a day off for skiing. The likely ski day has 15 scheduled, which I don't want to skip. Hmm.

Training officially starts for me today. I'm doing Bob Glover's novice plan from The Competetive Runner's Handbook. It's got some speedwork in it, which I've never really done before so we'll se how it goes. When I finished my first marathon last year I felt like I did a lot of long slow running, and that I would have benefitted from picking up the pace a little in training. I suspect I'll have to do a lot of it on the treadmill, so we'll see how that goes. I've been trying to ease into it by doing fartleks once a week.

Last week looked like this:

M - 3 miles + about an hour on the elliptical

T - rest (should have done 4 miles with fartleks, but came home and crashed after work)

W - 4

Th- 4 + weights with my trainer

F - rest

S - 6.5

I've been lifting weights with a personal trainer for the last 3 months or so. This week is my last week, but he thinks I should continue doing upper body weights (not too heavy, and not too many sets) during marathon training so that I can maintain some of the strength gains I've made. My current schedule calls for speed on Wednesdays, and then Thursdays off. What is everyone's opinion on doing weights on Thursdays? Fridays are usually a pretty short run, and I will run long on Saturdays.

Darn Hawk - that really sucks. I cannot even imagine being in the car that long. I would NOT have been a happy camper. Are you registering for Chicago? Registration opened today and I think I am in.

Bob - 80 miles! Nice work! Have fun skiing - can you switch things up so you have a lighter run on that day?

Nadra - good luck on your training!

Funny...I actually considered blogging about the whole experience. But then I thought, why on earth would I ever want to relive it?

And yes, I am in for Chicago, just finished my registration a few minutes ago. Trying to get Corral B qualification fax to go through...

I am in B too, but fortunately do not have to submit paperwork this time since I ran Chicago in 2009. Be sure to book your hotel soon too. I just tried the Hilton and it is already sold out. There are rooms for a decent price at the Congress though.

Yes, and despite the huge field, it typically closes out pretty quickly.
