<p>Looks like I get to start it off again, but either way it looks like this spring season is a wrap. Now comes the short summer "off-season" and then, for me at least, marathon training starts in mid-July (Chicago). More on the fall plan later. For now, I'll coast on fitness and hopefully knock off a nice 5k or two.</p>

<p>I finished up my spring season on a high note, which was good after somewhat disappointing results in my other two target races. North Face was my first ever attempt at a trail half marathon and I wasn't quite sure what to expect of it. The only yardstick I had for comparison was the Continental Divide Trail 10k in NC nearly 2 years ago and I ran that at over 10:00/mile pace.  Comparisons in trail races are really futile anyway, though, so I just set a modest goal of 2:00 which seemed either too hard or too easy based on the 2 long trail runs I put in before the race.</p>

<p>Anyway, I went out and ran a 1:48:48; once I get a free moment I'll do a full report but the short version is I ran it fairly conservatively, especially on the 2nd big hill climb, and that gave me enough energy to really thunder home at the finish. I finished 31st overall and probably passed 6 runners in the last 1.5 miles. As far as I'm concerned it was a very satisfying debut, one that has me wondering...when can I do another one of these? Or next year, should I do the North Face marathon?  Hmm....</p>

<p>Last week's mileage (taper, then race):</p>
<p>M 5/30 - rest</p>
<p>Tu 5/31 - 4.4 easy lake trail miles, then 2.5 mile neighborhood walk with DW</p>
<p>W 6/1 - 4.5 miles, with light intervals, 5x500 (300 rests) on track</p>
<p>Th 6/2 - 30 minute spin session at gym (8.1 miles)</p>
<p>F 6/3 - 3.4 miles light running on track, 100m strides on football field in FiveFingers</p>
<p>Sa 6/4 - rest, 2.5 mile walk with DW</p>
<p>Su 6/5 - North Face Endurance Challenge Half Marathon, 1:48:48</p>
