Hi everyone. I think we have a good group going, so I will get us started. I usually start threads on Mondays, but thanks to the holidays, I have a little extra time. So go ahead and post your training or whatever you have going on. Also send me your specific goals/race info if you haven't already. RFTL - I guessed on yours, so correct me if I'm wrong. Looks like we are forming a nice group for Boston.

If anyone else wants to join in, just post your goals!

Good Morning and Merry Christmas Everyone,

I will get back on the roads tomorrow. I got a new mp3 player to replace the other one I broke over the summer!

I guess I gotta plan out my miles again for March. Ugh.

Hi everyone. I am hoping to pr the half marathon on March 12 - the Tom King Half Marathon. I need sub 1:44:30.

This was my first week of training. 40 miles, with one tempo run, and a long run of 12 miles.

If I do a spring marathon, it will be a game time decision and run just for fun.

Mindi, I have to see what's up with my training before I settle on a goal.

Okay, week 2 in the books!

M: 9 ez (8:12)

T: 10 rolling hills on the 'mill (7:29) One mile up, one mile down, repeat

W: 9 tempo (7:39). 3 ez, 4 tempo which turned out to be 6:44 (I really was hoping to be around 6:30 but it's a start after such a long layoff, next time should be better), 2 ez.

T: 10 ez (8:04)

F: 10 ez (7:34) First run I have had in over 7 months without major pain! Weird and out of nowhere, but awesome.

S: 9 ez (8:22)

S: 15 long (7:39) Crazy windy out, some back/leg pain but a decent run. I really need to get some fitness back, this run was a bit of work and it should have been easy. I also wonder how much of this is mental and if I need to just suck it up buttercup and get out there and work!

72 total

This week might be rough, I just had my back injected this morning (esi) and have to rest for the remainder of today (I managed an ez 4 super early, though I was supposed to run 9 and just didn't have time). 2 of 3 doctors and my PT said to go ahead and run the rest of the week if I feel okay, the other guy said not to do a thing. I'm sure I'll run and I'll try my hardest to stick to my schedule if I can. I hope this helps with the leg issues!

Week 2 of Pfitzinger 18/70-85 for me. A so-so week. Something in my butt was sore after last week's long run, plus Monday was a travel day, so I skipped the scheduled 6 recovery on Monday.

M: off

Tu: 8 w/ strides

W: 13

Th: 6 recovery

F: 11

Sa: 6 recovery

Su: 16 w/ 6 @ MP (7:00)

Total: 60

Sunday was supposed to be 17 w/ 8 @ MP. And MP is supposed to be ~6:52, but I thought week 2 was a bit early for that kind of pace, so I ran 7s. And ran out of mojo after 6 @ that pace. I'm excusing myself because (1) I puked my guts out the middle of the night before (too much Christmas dinner? Or getting my wife's flu?) and (2) it was very cold and windy.

But... this does not bode well for Tuesday's 9 w/ 5 @ LT (~6:40). Hmmmm. LT run two days after an MP run? Really???

There is no way I'd be able to pull that off right now, MP runs are always tricky for me. If I can find someone to pull me through it or if I can find a race, it's all good, but on my own and early in a cycle there are just a disaster waiting to happen. I'd say 7's are pretty darn good with 16 weeks of training to go!

Thanks for asking! Well, I finished. Not exactly a blistering pace, at 6:11, but it was hilly and snow-covered trail, and the windchill was below zero at the start - definitely not what I was training for in a flat, fast November marathon. Nevertheless, glad to be finished. Setting my sights now on a half-marathon in March, and maybe a full in April / May.

Congrats, Steve.

Jebba - I added you to the line-up.

Bhearn - wow - MP already in week 2? I always find MP miles to be very difficult, but usually don't have them until several weeks in. Nice work.

Jen - those are some serious miles while recovering - what kind of max mileage are you hoping for this season (provided the leg cooperates).

I had another monkey wrench thrown into the mix this week. I was set to do my long run (15 miles) on Sunday. But unfortunately, DH was down for the count with the flu. DS told me he didn't feel good, so I couldn't exactly just take off for a couple of hours. So I cleaned the garage and house instead.

M: rest/core

T: 5 easy (9:05) / arms and core

W: 9 with 4 @ 15K pace (7:36) - this was on the treadmill and harder than it should have been

R: rest

F: 9 (9:17)

Sa: 5 (9:15)

Su: unplanned rest

Total: 28 and change

I am slow and need to drop a couple of pounds. Hopefully the next couple of weeks will come together and I will get close to the 50 mile range. I am doing a modified Pfitz 18/55 this season, but added a few weeks to the schedule, which is why I am not sweating these first couple weeks.

Well, what a difference two days makes. I set my sights on running 6:45s; anything faster was too intimidating, after Sunday. The 5 @ LT were 6:30, 6:34, 6:35, 6:34, and 6:30. (And actually it was 10 w/ 5 @ LT.) Lots of reasons: it was 45 degrees, warm enough for shorts. Little wind. Lots of other people in the park. Bright, sunny, and cheery. I was unencumbered by a fuel belt. I started the LT after mile 3, instead of the MP after mile 7. And I hadn't puked my guts out the night before.

I consider this very auspicious... I was running my LT workouts at about this pace late in my training for Boston '09, and I went into that feeling like I was in much better shape than I was going into Boston '11 training. Overall I seem to be handling the rapid mileage increase much better than I feared I might (knock on wood!).

NICE! I was really hoping my tempo pace was going to play out in the 6:30's last week. Nope, not yet, I've got some work to do down here to get back there.

I'm glad to hear you seem to be thriving with the increased mileage. I'm a big believer in high mileage, if I didn't have a coach holding me back I'm sure I'd try to average over 100/wk. I like running far, it seems so much easier than running fast :)

Mindi, RE my max mileage. See above, it's not up to me. I hope to get up around mid 80's to 90's but it depends on my health this go around. This week, with the procedure, has been a bust so far. If I'm not back on track by the weekend, I'll have to decide if I have enough time to properly train for Boston or if I need to find another race a few weeks later.

Hi folks, finally getting my thoughts in writing about plans for the first half of 2011. I'm still not sure about the hamstring that kept acting up last year. I took 5 weeks off after DNF’ing Chicago and have been back up to 35-40mpw with a couple of 5k's the last few weeks. It hasn’t been too bothersome but still some soreness afterwards and I get the feeling if I ramp up the mileage the cycle will repeat itself. I got referred by my sports medicine doctor to a physiatrist and have a second appointment with her January 3.

So I am pretty much focusing on shorter races out of necessity. I have 5k’s planned for New Year's day in Chicago and Jan 26 in Orlando, a local 5 mile race penciled in Feb 13 and the NY Colon Cancer Challenge 4 miler on Mar 27. I'm thinking about maybe running a spring marathon without a goal. I’ll see where things stand after the February race before signing up for anything, I'm looking at a few possibilities in May.

Good luck to everyone in '11 and hopefully I'll be checking back in before too long :)

I'll certainly agree with you there! It's the speedwork that's the challenge in any training program. I thought nothing of yesterday's 14, a day after the 10 w/ 5 @ LT (though I was a tad slow!).

I'll hop in here. Planning on running 2 marathons in the first half of the year and one 50k.

Last Chance for Boston, February 27, 2011, Dublin, Ohio. I'm running the "Last Chance for Boston" marathon in Dublin Ohio on February 27th. although now that Boston sells out right away, I think they need to change the name. I won't be running for time, just getting a supported long run, and checking off one more Ohio marathon from the list, so a healthy finish is my only goal. And I mean both physically and mentally healthy- the course is 26.2 1 mile loops for those not familiar with it.

May 1, 2011, Flying Pig Marathon, Cincinnati, Oh. Next up is the Flying Pig. This will be a pacing gig as my little brother will be trying to improve on his 3:59:xx time from a few years ago in his first 'thon. He's shooting for 3:45 but I'm not sure if he'll be ready for that. Either way it'll be strange setting out for a PW from the start.

June 4th 2011- Another Dam 50, Englewood Ohio. The 50k will be kind of a goal race. It's in my hometown, and I tried my first at that distance last year, and kind of crashed on the last lap. I finished in 5:19:55 last year, so I have a three tiered goal- C: PR, B: Sub 5:00, A-4:40.

No set training plan right now. Basically I'm just going to do as many miles each day as time and my legs allow, and take a day off if I'm feeling too drained. Deliberately slow miles through March to base build, then I'll let my legs dictate the pace, only targeting paces during long runs to get a gauge on what's possible in June.
