Shocked by the whole affair. Not much suprises me either but he came across as such a crusader. Nothing more than another fukkin' idiot in a long line of idiots. This is why I have become so disenfranchised with the whole political "thang". Liars, cheats, criminals, wind bags, hypocrites, the whole lot of 'em. Left or right. Ugh...

Have you ever read profiles in courage? We don't like principled people as politicians - gets in the way of making compromises. This is what the system requires. We just need to stop having unrealistic expectations about what we're going to get when we vote.

It would be interesting to see if the percentage of criminals in politics is any greater than in the rest of the world. I doubt it, but unfortunately our perception of who is engaging in criminal activity is heavily influenced by the stories in the press on these people. Honestly, what we know so far about this guy is that he hired a high class call girl a few times. But it's been headline news for the past 36 hrs straight. When was the last time you saw 36 hrs of news coverage for an honest hardworking politician?

I'm in no way attempting to condone rotten behavior, even behavior that may have been legal, but not nice. From what I hear about this guy, he really is a maroon, and should never have become a politician because of his inability to develop relationships and alliances. His family deserved better treatment, but he also deserves forgiveness at some point....assuming he realizes how badly he screwed up and gets some help for his personality weaknesses.

An interesting point was raised here: what really would motivate any principled person to seek high office in the current political climate?

And how can that be changed to attract better qualities leaders?

One thing that has always bothered me about the political process on the national level has been that we basicly give these positions to people who can pay to have them. We don't pay squat (in comparison with, say, private industry...POTUS is basicly the CEO of America and he gets what, $200,000?) and campaign spending is ridiculous.

I don't claim to have the answers, but if the pay was better and you didn't have to spend a ton of money to get into office, I'd bet you'd see more of the best and brightest competing for these jobs.
