Hey folks - I saw this over on another KR forum for an exclusive showing of this movie next Thursday at select locations. Sounds like a pretty cool movie to me (I just bought a ticket myself), so if you're interested, here's the thread:

Spirit Of The Marathon Movie

Yay...it was from my marathon in Chi. 2005! Memories! made me want to tackle that course again b/c I know I could take an HOUR off my time.

I had a surprise meet-up w/QN and Macabeth from the PRT...they came in right before the movie started and we chatted after. I never met Beth...so that's another internet running buddy to add to the met list!

i have never sat in a theater where the mood was so good. Pre-movie it was the strangest thing. I guess you just all know you have this giant thing in common. it was great!
Highlights...
*the entire theater groaning and repeating in unison "ugh..4:40's"
*the camera panning back...and seeing the spectacle that is the marathon on a big screen. That gave me chills.
I loved it. The are playing an encore for those of you who missed out.
I would certainly LOVE to own a copy

I LOVED this movie!

Some things that really struck me:

Women were not allowed to run the marathon in the olympics until I was a senior in highschool. Un freaking believable.

Did you stay for the whole thing, the deleted scenes and extra after the movie? Denna Kastor eats 5,000 calories a day. OMG> Can you imagine what her daily dinner thread would look like??

The hippo scenes in Kenya were hillarious. Did you all know that hippos kill more people in Africa than any other animal? Saw that on Animal Planet.

"my friends asked me if i was going to win."

that was an awesome movie!

in my opinion, the only way to improve it would have been to spend the entire 1:40 on deena.

(i did boo once. when that little ad from active.com came on before the movie. active.com sucks! a reminder that we have thugs in the running community who want to steal your money... )

The movie was great! It was funny being in a movie theater with mostly runners. It was all the people I usually see at races! I wish I had stayed for the deleted scenes and extras after the movie. I haven't been to a movie in years. This one was worth it.

Saw the movie last night and I enjoyed it. DW, who is making Chicago 2008 her first marathon, really loved it. I would have liked to see a bit more focus on the elite or sub-elite runners, but overall they did have pretty good balance.

I was bummed that they guy going for his BQ got injured. That's the guy I really wanted to see how he did. I loved his demo of the 5:00 min pace and how his treadmill wouldn't even go up to the pace that the elite runners do the entire marathon at. I really don't think the average person has any idea how fast the elite runners really are going - it makes the "are you going to win" questions seem so ridiculous.

Yes, and no. She eats 5,000 calories a day when marathon training, 3000 calories a day when she's not. That's a huge drop.

She noted at one point she was doing a 140+ mile running week. That doesn't include any weight, core or cross-training work she's also doing. When she was cooking dinner, she mentioned that her morning run had been 20 miles and her evening run was 6 miles!

And even though the dish appeared to be vegetarian, it was good to see that she was drinking wine and loaded the cheese on the dish. Nice to know you don't have to give up everything to be elite.

Elite level athletes are unreal. We've got a woman in our running club who will be running in the trials in April and she ran 19 miles last Saturday and then put in 20 miles with BrewDad and the rest of the Boston-bound group on Sunday at sub 7:30 pace. She also said that since the BAA is paying her entry for Boston, she'll run in the trials on Sunday and then in the marathon on Monday.

Nutz!
