I don't drink alcohol at all during the week. I just don't want or need a drink after work, with dinner, or even socially on the rare occasion I'm out. Rule is, if I have to work the next day, no drinkie for me!

But...I seem to have increased my drinking a little during the weekends. What was once 2 - 3 beers an evening has slowly become 6 - 7 and sometimes I throw in a glass of scotch on top of that. Am I drunk by then? Yup.

Is there such a thing as a weekend alcoholic? \

Because I seem to be one these days.

I was told a story in rehab of some guy that drank once a year..on Christmas or New Year's or something. But every year on that day he drank to oblivion and would wreak all kinds of destruction down on himself on that one annual binge. There's nothing that says you have to be an alcoholic in order to experience the negative effects of alcohol.

Brian,

It happened to me and scared me. What made it worse is that I came home from a neighbors house party drunk, in front of my kids and was extremely hungover the next day. I guess I was the living example of what I have always cautioned my kids NOT to do.

Back history: Dad and sister are alcoholics. Neither of them has had a drink, that I know of, in the last year. Dad, for a few years. There is no such thing as a recovering alcoholic. Once an alcoholic, always and alcoholic. Period. Dad's bro and father are/were both alcoholics. It tends to run in our family. Awesome gene pool.

Needless to say, my children are well aware of the dangers of falling in this hole. Did I fall in? No. Could I easily slide in? Sure. I decided after that incident to go dry for a year and see how things turned out. It has been 10 months sans alcohol. Do I miss it? Yes. Am I better for it? Probably. Have I learned my lesson? Yes, and I have set an example after the debacle for my kids.

Bottom line. You can be a weekend drunk/alcoholic/binge drinker. YOU have to decide if it is worth it and clean up your act, or continue down the road that could very well lead to adding more days other than weekends.

Why has your habit changed? Has something changed for you since you have increased the amount you drink.. ( Are you self medicating? ) If it seems like too much it is.

Brian if your drinking is worrying you as is seems to be, ask for Help.. ( and yes I meant a capital H there)

That's what I was wondering.

Thanks all. Very good advice here.

After some thought, there have been a few things that have "changed". At first I didn't think they were that big of a deal, but they seem to have an affect on me.

I'll definitely look into it.

Hey Brian. I'm glad that you had the courage to raise the question.

I think the folks here have given some good advice...especially in asking what has been changing in your life.

If I can be of help, count on me.
