...this is kind of the flipside to Gish's thread.

I've been posting on these internets non stop close to 3 years now.

My best internet buddy and a good friend IRL, Techgoddess, has stopped posting.

Someone who would always be there with a positive comment for me, no matter what kind of goofy shit I posted.

And yet ....I post on....

Is this some kind of incurable addiction?

Or do we actually get something out of this place?

Addiction. I know for me it is.

But there are good addictions such as running.

And bad ones such as illicit drug use.

Which one is this?

Or can't you answer that honestly since you're now a moderator?

I don't have anyone IRL who I can call to say XYZ just happened and now I'm ready to smack someone. So, I come here.

Likewise, there's no one who calls me to say <whatever> so I come here.

Otherwise, I could go days without interacting with anyone.

True, my desire to be online isn't very strong when I'm at home, but I'm also really busy for the hours that I'm home (generally).

This guy goes to a psychiatrist and says, "Doc, uh, my brother's crazy; he thinks he's a chicken." And, uh, the doctor says, "Well, why don't you turn him in?" The guy says, "I would, but I need the eggs."

Me either. Telling fact: I never read let alone post on my days off, because I have things to do. My work days, on the other hand...

I do however also purposely keep myself somewhat distanced, even though I have met some now good friends through internet discussion boards in the past.

I've met probably 40-50 of the posters in the 30s thread (where I can usually be found). So, they've gone from being my internet friends to being my RL friends. I'd find it strange NOT to check in every day - at least to see what's going on - even if I don't necessarily post.

And one reason I come here is to read your smack talk.

And I sympathize with your concerns, but having met you IRL, I usually also find it very amusing.

Except for your mother, who I am starting to want to smack around myself.

Once again Diane, I think you and Woody have gotten to the heart of the matter.

I know that sometimes.... I need the eggs.

I don't ask for virtual hugs or support often, but the few times I have, it has been there for me here.

And it has helped.

Likewise.

I consider some (many, even) of the folks here friends, even some I haven't met in real life.

Heck, I was even routing for Xavier! I was also shaking my head in disbelief as I did it, but I did it. *Don't tell the alumi committee, they may retract my diploma.

And if I thought that smacking my mother upside the head would actually accomplish anything, I would have done it decades ago.
