[Litchfield Hills]

<p>Well, it s a photography forum.  Yeah we know this is a running site, but we can't run every waking moment.  Well, maybe some of us can.  But we have other hobbies and interests, and if you have not notices, there are some phenominal photos interspersed within the threads.  There was a thread in the PRT about two weeks ago (<a href="http://www.kickrunners.com/forum/thread/67936/best-way-to-get-into-amateur-photography">http://www.kickrunners.com/forum/thread/67936/best-way-to-get-into-amateur-photography</a>) that spurred some fun discussion about getting into photography, and that led me to request this forum.<br><br>
The idea here (as I see it) is that this is a place for anything photography related.  If you are looking for advice on technique, equipment, ideas for creativity, post it.  Hopefully it will spur fun discussions.<br><br>
All are welcome.  From complete newbies to seasoned pros.  Happy shooting.</p>

<p>I was wondering if anyone would be interested in topic assignments?  We could have 1 per month or 1 per week or whatever and everyone can post their photos of that topic in a thread?</p>

<p>I like to stretch my legs, but it's hard to just go out and photograph without some purpose in mind.  And it's fun to see other people's interpretations of the subject and their photos.</p>

<p>I like the idea too.  Mostly I'm just a casual photographer with my little point and shoot, but I have already learned tips from folks around here, so some assignments would be interesting to me.  I do have access to fancier equipment once I can get my sibs to show me how to use them and tell me what the heck f-stop means and all that. <br>

<p>If you have questions about what the heck f-stop means, this would be the place to ask.  Or anything photography related.</p>

<p>Secondly, do not get hung up on equipment.  A few weeks back I took a photo workshop (the pic of my daughter in the portrait thread was a homework assignment for that).  The wife of the instructor showed us a book she is trying to get published (very touching chronology of her mom going through Alzheimer's). it had tons of photos, things like her dancing with her mom when they were kids, and again as her mom was deteriorating.  All of the new photos were taken with an iPhone.  Every single one.  So you do not need the fanciest SLR, with all the bells and whistles.</p>

<p>I actually have some pretty good cell phone photos too, when I've lucked into good lighting.  That would actually be a fun thread in here, one where people can post ones taken with the cell phone camera.</p>

<p>With regard to equipment in general, your point is well taken.  Mostly I just wish there wasn't that slight delay from when I press the button to when the camera actually captures the image.  Sometimes what I wanted to capture is no longer there.</p>

<p>  I just found this forum today, but it looks like something I could definitely get in to. I've had a few pictures I've taken over the years that I thought were really something, but without feedback I may just be patting myself on the back with an empty arm. I do, however, try to get some composition in a lot of my pictures, and I'm discovering the crop tool is my best photo friend!</p>

<p>  Over in the PRT I posted some shots from my recent trip to Australia. These were the raw shots, and a lot of them were just your typical vacation snapshots. There are some, though, that I'm really proud of. When I get off work tonight I'll try to post some of them so I can get some critiques and feedback.</p>

<p>1) While DS and DW have digital cameras, all my Australian photos were taken with this antique medium called "film". Does anyone remember that?</p>

<p>2) On a more serious note, what about photo contests? Maybe we should have a thread where people can suggest decent contests people could enter, and/or comment on whether someone's pictures were 'good enough' to justify entering one.</p>

I used to develop my own (B&W of course) back in the late 70s-early 80s.  Had my own 'darkroom" (my parent's laundry with a towel stuffed under the door...and I could only do prints at night...plenty of water...no one would bother me...</p>

<p>I still have the trays and my enlarger and my tank, safe light...but, now...no space, no water where it's dark.  I would LOVE to get my daughter involved in this, but I know she wouldn't be interested.  She wants to shoot and download...that's OK though...it's the way of the future.</p>

<p>I like developing my own film and making my own prints but it's getting harder to find the paper and chemicals and stuff. </p>

Yes, watching the picture appear on the paper *is* magical.  WRT paper and chemicals...you can still pretty much get anything you need online.  Buy in bulk...stick it in the fridge...<br>

<p>I have an old Nikon F2 DLR at home that I used as a kid back in the 1970s, and it has a light meter, but it doesn't work anymore.  Replacement parts are non-existant.</p>

<p>We tried "Sunny 16" one time for exposure...didn't work out too well.  Everything came out too dark. </p>
<p> </p>
<p>Guess we could try sunny 8, but, now that we have the DSLR...well, I'm not as interested in experimenting anymore.</p>
