Loooooooooooooong time friend from HS (lifeguarding in summers, hanging out......super secret crush, you know the kind) about my swim meet.

He's an ex swimmer, and ex swim coach who's always been a good sounding board on the occasional "freak out" moment.

Anyway...he's one of my few close friends that I can call and talk to who understands the times and strategies and drops in seconds...and all that. I tend to check in with him every few months to see how he's doing, and fill him in on things.

Anyway....
We were chattin' it up and going over times, and he started laughing at me.....HARD.

I was all excited about doing descending 100's, and doing what the one coach said (save legs during the first 250, then start kicking, and descend to the end) and he "mentioned" that perhaps I wouldn't want to "go out for a coffee" during the 2nd 100 the next time I swim the 500. He said, "what? did you go to sleep????"

Then, he proceeded to reassure me that I would be fine swimming in the "ocean"....that I didn't need to worry about being the fastest one out there, just faster than the last guy....cause it's the last guy that's REALLY moving down on the food chain!

So.....
lesson from all this?
Pacing......need to learn pacing for more consistent times. sheesh!

This is the guy who got married and is now approaching father-hood who SWORE he'd never do either.

Sometimes I just don't get guys.

Boys. ug. Sometimes my DH says dumb things like that. Good thing he has learned how to duck. Write it off, move on. Maybe he's got something going on in his life, or he is jealous you still swim. You said ex-swimmer/coach right? If he continues to say stuff like that stop talking to him, 'cause with friends like that you don't need enemies. Just my 2 cents.

I got a similar reaction last summer when I mentioned I was kind of struggling with 80 second quarter. This fat, masters bike racer starts laughing that anybody would even bother to run so slow. What a tool.

Oh my.....

I'm not upset with him (well, except for the part about getting married, and getting his wife preggers).......

He's the type that you can laugh and joke with.....like CS and Tithers do.

He looked at me one time when I was trying to learn a double one summer...."Stitch, just stop. You're going to kill yourself, and I'M going to have to pull you out of the water. It's cold today, I don't want to get in. Please, just stop."

I thought his reaction was funny.....very supportive, but still able to point out that there's room to improve....in real obvious ways. The whole "pay attention" thing, don't zone out, THEN decide to move.....keep moving from the very beginning, but be controlled about it.

But, I will say this....
the support that I can get here is wonderful........
from all ages and experiences of people.
