So, convince me...or not?

I am a troglodyte in many ways. One of the most obvious is my firm refusal to engage in Facebook.
 
My MIL wanted to friend me. Gak. (As if she could dislike me more!)
 
So, I do not have a FB account.
 
My degree program has a facebook page where they go discuss things relevant to the field.
 
Is it worth joining for that? It's not mandatory.
 
Should I? Shouldn't I?

I do have a facebook page, and I am friends with many people mostly from here and runningforums, and alot of former students.
 
But I really don't do much on there.
 
I really just got tired of getting the messages in my inbox saying "someone" has invited you to join facebook!
 
After about two years of those, I bit the bullet and joined.
 
I'm pretty much convinced that facebook is what has killed the "old message board", and that makes me sad.

I like facebook more for communicating with my own family and extended family. It's a great way to share pictures!
 
I also have some colleagues on, and get updates from my favorite sports teams.
 
I have relatively few forum friends on now (just the ones I interact with in real life). For a while I had a lot of kick friends on, but my friend feed got waaaaaay too busy, and I'd miss family updates as a result. So I unfriended a lot of people, not because I don't like them, but because I needed to narrow the focus.

I bit the bullet. Most of my home school friends stopped posting on the message board because they were mostly posting on FB. Plus, thats where all the info on the retreat was. But, I don't use my real name and my family didn't know about it.
 
My mother has been nagging me. Nah, just not into that stuff and all that. Then, I spent a week with my parnets and accidentally stayed logged in. Ops... Luckily, mom couldn't remember what name I used so can't find me.

as I've stated, I don't hardly do anything on there. Log in occasionally, ok a few friend requests, and that's it. Upload an occasional picture.

You can get on facebook, and then make your privacy setting such that your MIL can only see specific things. I have a special list for work acquaintances, where they can see my basic information, but nor my pictures or status updates. 
 
I frequently angst about the fact that I've been friended by old high school and college buddies that I otherwise have had no contact with. I don't want to hear what's going on with them. I don't dislike them, but I've moved on.

If you want someone to support a decision not to join, consider me a fellow Luddite. No Facebook account, nor any plans to set one up. I'm keeping up with the people I want to just fine using such old-fashioned technologies as email, telephone calls, or (dare I say it) even regular snail mail.
 
 No Twitter, either. While I think I'm a pretty interesting guy, I'm not so conceited to think that others are dieing to hear my latest banalities.
 
 The only reason I have a camera in my cell phone is because that's the only way you can get one with a PDA - and the only reason I have the PDA in the cell phone is because you can't get a stand-alone PDA anymore. I've never texted anyone, and I made sure that they not only did not activate any sort of internet access through the phone, but that they also set it up so I couldn't even accidently log in to the internet.
 
 The world will actually go on quite nicely even if you're not connected to something 24/7/365.

rlemert--gotta agree!!! When I did the 3-day walk in Phoenix last weekend, I had my phone off. I was amazed at all the people using their phones during the walk. One guy as soon as he got into camp was on the phone to his mother. Like she really had to know how every day went as it was happening?! 
 
Son3 has been having some "issues" at school. Before leaving Ohio last monday, I contacted the school and told them that I would be out of town and unless it was a dire emergency (gushing blood, bones poking through the skin) I'd deal with it when I got home this week. One of the teachers sent an email Thursday afternoon. Apparently I'm a terrible mother because I didn't get back with them until Monday morning. Uh, did you not read the email that I was freakin' OUT OF TOWN?! Oh, and the issue? Requesting a conference for next week.

I have unplugged a lot more recently, and weird ... I sleep a lot more and am less stressed out! I'm already on a computer all day long for work. I'd rather spend my free time WITH people, instead of online with them.
 
A few of my really close friends, who are 10 years younger than me, refuse to join facebook and I don't blame them! I love it for keeping up with people, communicating information, etc., but sometimes I go days without being on it and I tell you ... it's impossible to catch up with the newsfeed or notifications so a lot of times I don't even try. One thing I did early on was shut off all the notifications via email. I don't need an email if someone commented on someone else's photo after me, thank you very much!
