I heard on CNBC today that a significant amount of intel that was used for this strike had originated from gitmo before it was shut down... does the 'end justify the means'? If so - should gitmo be reopened if not - then should we be held accountable for being 'in-humane'?

In general, I'm opposed to the "end justifies the mean's" scenarios. However, in very limited circumstances when attempting to capture leaders of nations or groups we are at war with such as Osama Bin Laden, I'm not opposed to it. Now if we were to do the same things with say Libyans or Hamas I would not be in favor of such scenarios because those nations/groups have not been as vicious as OBL nor have they attacked innocent (i.e. non-military) Americans. I realize one can argue in the case of Ghadaffi that he had something to do with Pan Am Flight 103 but we have not proven that and he has not bragged about it as OBL did concerning 911.

Bottom line. I will give even the Bush Administration a pass on any method used obtaining information used to track down OBL. OBL lived by the sword and died by it. So be it, regardless of what method(s) were used to track him down.

Everything that happened in the South Park episode didn't come true, I guess. Except for the being dead part.

I kind of think that was a bad idea. There are people out there that will insist that he is still alive. Without seeing a body, perhaps by journalists, people will speculate.

thanks for the correction- allow me to clarify- reopen the " interrogation techniques " that Obama outlawed when he first became President. It was those techniques that brought the intel forward that resulted in Osamas death

I still think those are there too Rich. I think all of Obama's "promises" regarding Gitmo, I think he came to the realization that it needed to stay. Although, I'm not sure.

The problem with endorsing the methods used to obtain information (assuming the media information is correct as to how we found out the name of the courier), is we explicitly tell the rest of the world it is ok to abuse and torture U.S. soldiers to obtain information. It's great when we use torture against someone else and get information, no so great when we hear it being used against U.S. soldiers. It's a slippery rope.

Also the information we received that led us to OBL's courier was from prisoners being interrogated in Eastern European prisons, not Gitmo.

And Gitmo is open against Obama's desires. Congress has kept Gitmo open.

One factor is the fact that Islamic Law requires quick burials for the deceased. I imagine the government is trying to show that this action wasn't part of a "war against Islam" but an action against an individual, and this action was intended to help demonstrate that.

A larger factor, I believe, is that they don't want to risk having any burial site become a shrine. If he'd been buried on-shore, his grave would become a lightning rod - attracting all sorts of terrorists and terrorist wannabe's and giving them a sense of inspiration. (Look at all the modern neo-nazis who still revere Hitler, and think about what they would do if they had a body available to "worship".)

I've heard that explanation and I'm not really buying it, for a few reasons: 1) Bin Laden was simply too valuable a target not to interrogate, pull DNA from, humiliate in handcuffs, etc. 2) Since when do we give a crap (as a government or military) about Islam, to the extent that we would take extraordinary measures to execute a proper burial for the single most valuable target, whether symbolically or strategically, in the War on Terror? 3) Most Muslims hate OBL and couldn't give a damn whether he was given a proper Muslim burial or not. 4) If the government really cared about not upsetting Muslims, they wouldn't be tramping around the Middle East, blowing up people and property at will.

Avoiding a graveside shrine is a more vital consideration for national security than interrogating bin Laden? Besides, if you have a grave people visited to worship, what better magnet for drawing potential terrorists out into the open to be identified. Seriously, how many would visit a grave to worship bin Laden? Doesn't pass the smell test.

(I know you're just the messenger and I appreciate the explanation. This is my response to their explanations.)
