Anybody here running in snowshoes? Recommendations?

Have returned from a week of hiking, swimming, kayaking, drinking, running, cycling, and general recreation on Maui and, to help soothe the sting of returning home, I am looking to buy a new toy. I did search the forums and found some useful info, unfortunately, REI carries neither the Atlas Run nor Northernlites. Sure, I could order them, but I'd rather have them *now* (of course ). I can also rent some sort of snow shoe from Weston Ski Track or REI in the meantime. Am looking to occasionally replace one run a week with snowshoeing, probably around the perimeter of the frozen pond at the end of our street (which is covered in a bunch of snow). Plus, they might be useful for taking the dogs out for a walk in the current conditions where the snow is deeper.

Am also totally considering making a pair of screw shoes. My yaktrax are busted and it didn't seem to last long before they got that way.

I have a pair of Atlas Run snowshoes. I researched all of the brands and these consistently came up with the best ratings. They are light, and I like the bindings

I have been doing a lot of snowshoe running this winter, and even a few races.

It is TOUGH, with 10 min miles feeling like 6 min miles, but it is such a great workout. The impact is minimal, and the aerobic/anaerobic benifit is outstanding.

You can run almost anywhere, and once you have a trail tamped down, you can really move. I have been running on the XC trails behind LS, Mt Misery, Haskell Field... I have even used them on the streets in my neighborhood before the plows come by.

It has been a great thing to do this winter.

They are available online at many places for $169-199, with free shipping. I would check EMS in Framingham if you want to try someplace local.

Thanks, Zdoc! There is only REI in Framingham now; I think the closest EMS is in Harvard Square. Maybe Natick Outdoor Store is also a possibility?

Didn't see you at Derry...hope it went well for you if you were there. Even though it sold out, or nearly sold out, only about 670 folks showed up on race day. Temps weren't even that bad.
