I feel weird continuing to post in the good morning thread after morning is over...

So, I started "sleep training" with the boys today because they had been so cranky/grumpy/overtired the past few days--which was really my fault because I wasn't really paying attention to their sleep cues, and thus ended up with two unhappy babies.

The hardest part of the day so far has been this morning: When they woke at 5:30, I turned on all the lights in my room to feed them. That was harder for me than for them. After they ate, I kept them awake until 6:30, then laid them back in the crib. They went down with very little fuss.

They woke at 7:15ish, a good, normal waking time. I fed them, brought them downstairs, and they did tummy time, i read them a book, and they watched me eat breakfast. Roman started exhibiting "sleepy" signals at about 8:15, so I brought them upstairs, fed them again, and they were sound asleep with no fuss at all at 8:40.

They woke at 10:40 (two whole hours, woo-hoo!) and I fed them and they fell directly back to sleep until 12. At 12, I brought them downstairs, fed them, more tummy time, and they fell asleep on their tummies, so I brought them back up stairs, laid them in the crib. They fussed a bit, so I laid them on the bed on my great big preggo pillow and talked to them and showed them their teddy bears (not allowed in the crib yet) and took pictures of them until they fell asleep, at which point, I moved them back to the crib. That was at 1:20.

In other words, they are napping like champions! There has been very little crying today, and nothing I could describe as crankiness. YAY!

Now, the true test will be how things go TONIGHT.

Everyone has their favorite book, but mine is "Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Child."

It seems their schedule is right on par with what babies their age do: Nap one is usually around 8:30. Nap two around 11:30 to noon. Nap 3 around 3:30. Bedtime around 7.

I let the Tot work it out on his own at 5:30 these days; he's 9 months old, though, and he'll just fuss for about 10 minutes and go back to sleep. Not cry...just fuss a little. It's been good!

They'll get there. The sleeping thing can be hard...TinyE didn't sleep through the night until he was a year old. But he's always been high maintenance that way.

So far I've only skimmed HSHHC, but I am thrilled with the results from this first day. I read the twin chapter first, then went back and read what they should be doing at this age, and decided to just give it a try. They are 10 weeks old now, so a little early to be "sleep training" but their sleep got really bad in the past week and I decided it was time to do something or I would go insane!!! We're hoping for a 7:30 bedtime tonight, and then hopefully they will not need to eat until I come to bed at 9:30-10. After 10, they've typically only been waking once a night. I really hope that continues!

No, they aren't too young to start sleep training. You find a schedule that works for all of you, and you stick with it. We all do best with a regular sleep/wake pattern. You're just helping them find it.

You will have days that things fall apart. All the sudden, they will want to nurse every two hours, rather than 3-4. Another time, they may end up way over-tired for "no good reason". So, you feed the hungry baby, you cuddle with the cranky baby. But, the more you can stick with a schedule, the happier you will all be!
