Never let it be said that I am succinct! Thanks for reading my POTD, and if it actually manages to leave you with a question or two, ask away.

1. Why do you run?

To celebrate life and the gift of a healthy body.

To support my endorphin dependency, er, keep my mood and energy level up.

To do things I once believed I couldn’t do – self-discovery.

To be outside in this beautiful world.

To share the journey with others (including you wonderful people).

To eat pizza and cake once in a while!

2. What is your greatest accomplishment?
Changing careers from journalism to fitness and wellness. It has been a rebirth.

3. What is your (running) motto/theme song?

“Yes I can!”

In less serious moods I also say “Git ‘r Done!” and pick it up near the final miles of runs. Obviously I have been surrounded by ******** too long now.

Songs: embarrassing confessions part. I have a soft spot for anything from the '70s and a lot of '80s. Lately the themes from “Flashdance” and “Fame,” performed by Irene Cara, motivate me in a way that’s hard to articulate. It has to do with my dance background and both of those movies being about pursuing dreams. One of these days I will race a 5K in a cut-off sweatshirt and leg warmers! Also: “This Is It,” “No Lookin’ Back,” “I’m Free,” and other songs by Kenny Loggins, who I am not ashamed to say is one of my all-time favorite recording artists.

“Dig In,” by Lenny Kravitz also works during runs … so does the Roadrunner cartoon theme.

4. How do you deal with bad runs?
I tell myself they are building character and strength, and try to laugh about them eventually.

5. Do you reward yourself for good runs? How?
Lately running is the best part of my day so it’s enough of a reward.

6. Who do you admire most?
Many of us have said family members and I of course admire my parents, although no one is perfect and we have had ups and downs in the past. My dad especially has hugely influenced my career and personality, and my mom is an amazing role model of selflessness and non-stop energy. I appreciate my parents more than anyone else.

These amazing women: http://www.stenzeltwins.com/. I highly recommend a visit to their Web site or Blog, but in short they are twin sisters who live in Northern CA born with cystic fibrosis, who have become Transplant Olympics athletes after multiple lung transplants. One of the twins, Isa, is married to one of my oldest friends. No matter how fast or how far I ever run, I could never dream of being the runner that she is.

My students, particularly those who excel while balancing college with work and raising families. It is an honor to work with them and I have learned far more from doing so than I could ever teach them.

Finally, yoga instructor Shiva Rea. This is just one small snippet of her perspective: “Let us rise to meet life. Let us bow to receive life. Let us feel each blessing with total celebration and offer that to any and all in need. I have sat in abundance with people who have nothing and realize that thanksgiving is really the place where our soul is moved from our heart which is love unbound by any condition.”

7. What is the greatest advice you have ever received?
Early in high school my dad called me out on not pursuing academics or extracurriculars to my full ability. I took it to heart and became the overachiever that I am today.

I interviewed Arlo Guthrie once and asked him “What would you still like to learn?” His reply was along the lines of “I’d rather unlearn a few things.” I thought that was insightful too.

8. What do wish you had learned younger?
That it’s not all about me. I was a pretty self-absorbed kid and 20something. Now I know life is so much more joyful and rewarding when it’s about being kind and raising others up.

The gifts of yoga and meditation that all of us can access if we choose to.

9a. What do you wish you could do but can't?
Perform as a show-stopping singer and musician. That would feel amazing.

Overhaul the health care system and generally unhealthy/empty culture in the United States, and heal our planet. Please tell me that does not sound too Miss North Carolina!

9b. (my addition) What do you wish you could do well and CAN?
Have a personal life that is as fulfilling as my professional and “pastime” lives. As a single 30something, I look forward to getting that delicate balance right and blossoming as a late bloomer in this area.

10. How would your friends describe your personality?
Positive, organized, friendly, free-thinking, open-hearted, laid-back (I do not really agree with this but keep hearing it), intelligent, independent.

11. What do you wear running? favorite outfit?
Besides NB 767s and Thorlo low-cut socks (for long runs), anything wicking and comfortable is good. I do not run in a skirt! Blue is my favorite color so I like to wear blue. Brooks is my favorite brand for running clothes and I could spend hundred$ to update my wardrobe if I had that kind of cash.

12. What has been your favorite race?
Fargo Marathon 2005. It was the first marathon I “ran” vs. “finished” and so fun to run the streets of my hometown and have family and friends along the course. My mom jumped in with me at mile 20 and promptly exclaimed “Wow – you’re running fast!” Thanks, Mom!

Shamrock Half Marathon in 2006 was a great as I kept up with a “rabbit” I didn’t think I could stay with the whole way for a breakthrough PR, then turned around to run/walk my 5 mos. pregnant friend in for her very first Half Marathon finish. It was an extraordinary day!

13. Do you have a goal race right now?
Kiawah Island Marathon on Dec. 8.

14. What makes you happy?
Having so many wonderful people in my life, the gift of health and fitness, my family’s good health, and a relatively low stress level. Everything else is gravy. You know what? Gravy makes me pretty happy around this time of year! So does singing (poorly) to the radio on long drives, exploring trails and being outdoors in general, cake or sugar cookies with mounds of buttercream icing, text messages just to say good morning, relaxed days on the Outer Banks, sushi, teaching and helping others to live healthier lives, taking time to notice something beautiful that only I notice, the dance scene in “Napoleon Dynamite,” sitting down with something good to read and time to read it, coffee and oatmeal for breakfast … I could go on.

I have so little to not be happy about. Life has been very, very good to me so far and I know it won’t always be 100% rosy, so I appreciate it every day and will strive to stay positive and still look for joy when the inevitable low times do happen.

15. Tell us one interesting thing about you that you haven't said (at least not often) on this forum in the past.
I was an artsy kid well into college, active in dance, music, visual art, and creative writing. I always thought I would end up with a much more “creative” day to day existence than I have currently, but I do anticipate finding ways to incorporate some of these outlets again.

Maybe because my parents are products of the '60s, I’ve always had an idealistic hippie chick side, too.

16. Tell us one interesting thing about another user of this forum that has not been posted (at least not often) on this forum in the past (make sure the other person will not object to posting the info!).
Hmm … I could say a lot. But that is for me to know, and to hold near and dear.
SGH - I LOVE your perspective on life! Your post had me smiling and feeling way more full of life than my pre-morning coffee self would believe. I do hope you find that special person to compliment such a lovely individual!

Oh and one question ...what types of yoga do you teach? And do you do retreats as well?

Thanks for your kind words, Maria.

My teacher training school, Asheville Yoga Center, calls itself "eclectic." It is mainly vinyasa/flow but we studied Anusara, Kundalini, Yin, Ashtanga, and a little Iyengar.

I don't really call what I teach any style, but it tends to be flow-based.

I don't do retreats -- maybe someday! For now I love going to yoga retreats. My next one is a "year-end detox" just before New Years.

I need to get back to yoga more often ...this sounds like just what I need! Where do you attend retreats? My sis on the West Coast has traveled to Mexico and further North in California ...she loves them.

That's so cool for your sister. Maybe you will join her for one? So far I've stayed pretty close to home: Outer Banks, Yogaville (an ashram in Virginia's Blue Ridge Mtns.), and Asheville. My next one will be in Charlotte. I'd love to have the travel budget and time to do one in Costa Rica, Hawaii, or even India.

SGH rules!

Well I tried to make it Sunday, but I got so damned depressed
That I set my sights on Monday and I got myself undressed
I ain't ready for the altar but I do agree there's times
When a woman sure can be a friend of mine

Well, I keep on thinkin' 'bout you, Sister Golden Hair surprise
And I just can't live without you, can't you see it in my eyes?
I've been one poor correspondent, and I've been too, too hard to find
But it doesn't mean you ain't been on my mind

Will you meet me in the middle, will you meet me in the air?
Will you love me just a little, just enough to show you care?
Well I tried to fake it, I don't mind sayin', I just can't make it

Thanks, Lincoln.

Frankly I'm shocked that the first response to this thread did not involve mocking me for my deep unabiding love of Kenny Loggins' music.

Some of his less radio-known stuff is even better. The songs I mentioned above, the whole "Leap of Faith" album especially "If You Believe," "Watching the River Run," let's see ... the theme from Caddyshack II ("Nobody's Fool" too.

He was the movie theme guy for a while though.

I also own the book he and his wife wrote about their relationship.

OK I will stop now.
