.

Today I ran in a 5k race, which, combined with warm up and cool down gave me 9.5 miles for the day. I'd hoped - a bit of a stretch, probably - to run sub 20:00 today for the first time ever. My previous PR was 20:39, from last year, and I'd run a 20:42 in September, so 19:xx would have meant a :40 improvement at this point in my running career. My plan of attack was 6:20 / 6:40 / hold on to about 6:30 for mile 3 and sprint the last 1/10. It was almost that - 6:17 / 6:35 (12:52 for 2 miles is a new unofficial 2 mile PR for me), but the last mile was very tough, into a strong headwind. The closest guy in front of me finished an entire minute ahead of me, so he was just about out of sight by that point, and there was no one breathing down my neck , so it was just me and the watch. I guess I must have run around a 7:00 pace for the last 1.1, because I finished in 20:35. That is a new PR, so I am celebrating that, but wondering what might have been if only. Once again I finished out of the hardware, 9th overall but 4th out of 15 in my AG. On the bright side, I was bumped to 2nd in my AG, because the 1st OA finisher is about 40, and the first finisher from our School District (also a trophy), the guy who beat me by a minute, is also in my AG. So I did get a medal out of it after all. Spending the rest of the day cleaning out the garage so we can get the car inside before early snows start flying. Go Yankees!!

Great PR BTY!!

I will second the Yankee love. I am a big C.C. fan. I remember when Jeter was going up and down between Columbus Clippers and New York and reading in the USA Today about the best player to come out of high school in years. A guy named Alex Rodriquez.

I was originally going to run a 5 pm race but got invited by my parents to watch the Buckeyes play tonight and I would not have made it home in time for the game. When I searched for another race, I decided to run a longer race instead of the 5ks I have been running. This race was also put on by Joe Corra as a memorial for Rick Brown who died while running the Detroit half marathon last year. He was a long time member of the River City runners and walkers.

Today was a fantastic day for racing ruined by an 8 am start. It was a nice drive home though in the sunshine along the Muskingum River. Unfortunately there was no sunshine during the race because it couldn't get through the fog!! It was also lucky if it was 40° and cool weather running isn't one of my strong points.

I did about 20 minutes of warming up and a few strides before the race. I attempted to overdress with a hat, gloves, sweatshirt and half tights under my shorts but my hands were still cold the whole race. Once the race got going, I passed a few quick starters and was 6th or 7th. After the first mile (6:25) there was one guy a little ahead of me that I could see. I caught him at the top of the hill at the 2 mile which passed in 12:52. At this point, I couldn't see any of the runners in front of me because of the fog. I used some downhills to pick up the pace and ran the 3rd mile in 6:15. The course then turned back towards the start and we went up a fairly large hill. It was hard to tell how big it was because the fog was so thick in this area (close to the river). I slowed to 6:33 that mile so I was 25:40. The last mile was slightly uphill to the finish and the fog cleared enough in this area I could finally see a runner in front of me and he was about a minute ahead. I ran steady to the finish and finished in 32:01. I was 5th or 6th overall and first in my age group.

Now I am off to use that sunshing to my advantage putting some windows in a house.

Nice running Rip and BTY

I also raced a 5km today, picked up a win. Solo TT from 1km as I broke the field early. To be honest I went too early and paid in the 3rd km where I lost some time. Last 2kms I ran hard but without a race on it just didn't happen. Ran 17.30. Nice to win but really I want to run faster.

Also did 26 miles on the bike managing to break my front deraillier. Managed to ride on the small ring only but was totally dropped by MrsG who was testing her new TT bike. Discovered that 120rpm and 27mph is about the best I can manage and she pushed on to just over 30mph !!!!!

Marshalling at a local marathon tomorrow, nice to give something back.

No running today...just some resistance training, some PT exercises and a 1.4 mile hike on this gorgeous, but windy day. Branches were crashing out of the trees all around us!

Nice racing BTY (congrats on the pr!), Mike (had to do a double check because both you and bty had 2 miles at 12:52) and nice speedy 5K for you also Gobi. Have fun volunteering tomorrow.

I only did a short run this morning. 3.4 miles. Tomorrow the plan is to do my long run. somewhere between 10-12 depending on how I'm feeling. Since I only did another run of 5 miles this week, I should keep it at 10 though. we'll see.

David has his football game this afternoon, so we'll head to that shortly, then going to watch the one after ours, then off to the pumpkin patch if we still feel up to it. David is tired as he had a sleepover at a friends last night (7 boys all slept over at his buddy's house), then went to bed VERY late (like 2 a.m.) and got up early of course. He might not even be able to stay awake for the Beaver game tonight.

Hoping for a Wisconsin win today!

Guess I'll go with this thread. Very busy with DS today so a fly-by post. I really wanted to race this morning but didn't, of course. My heel felt fine so I hit the track. I wanted mile-race intensity as that will probably be my next race, even though most are non-timed fun runs. After a warmup of 1.35 miles, I did 800m hard effort, not looking at Garmin, of course. That's it. I thought I had a mile in me at that intensity but didn't. 3:39 so I have some work to do, and I think I can train safely for such a short distance. I want to break 7 minutes as my PR is 7:01. But I won't do any speedwork this week as I want to be rested for Arizona. Did yoga for an hour after that. My arms were tired. I'll run some more this evening in Tulsa while DS is at a birthday party.

Congrats on the PR...BTY ...& the overall and AG wins Gobi & rip

7 miles in the woods, longest run in almost a month,........still wearing a short sleeved shirt in the early AM, although that is going to change soon.

Since someone else started it, I'll jump in and say ....... I HATE THE *&^%$#@ yankees!!!!! and I'm sick to death of seeing them on TV in October. Much as I'd like to see the Giants & Rangers in the WS, unfortunately their hitting (Giants) & pitching (Rangers) won't get either one of them there. So, it'll be Phillies in 5. Only good thing about that is it lessens the number of times I'll have to listen to that &^%$# a-hole Tim McCarver on TV.

I feel a lot better now.

Nice vent John. I'm with you brother!

I'll add to the informal race report theme of today. 15K for me, and blasted my old, but admittedly weak, PR out of the water. 1:03:09 (6:47/mi), over 2 minutes off my previous best. 8th OA, 2nd in AG. This was only my third time running this distance, so it wasn't like it was a huge accomplishment. But I ran it to the best of my current ability, and I'm always happy with that.

Followed by a nice vegetarian lunch: beer and tater tots. The tots were Cajunized. Ummmm, good!

And way to back into the medals, BTY. I can relate!!!

I'm starting to feel like a real slug here. Slept in and then spent the day running around with errands. Meant to go biking, but my excuse is that I left my bike shoes at work! Really. Oh well, I have bruchetta topping made with the last of our cherry tomatos and DH is making zuchinni bread with the last of our zukes.

Hiya. Sorry I'm late, but it took a while to scroll through Rip's post.

tomwhite, bop humourless sourpuss with a noodle.

Excellent racing, gents. Congrats on the PR/medal BTY; the AG win in the cold, awful morning, Rip; and the overall win, Gobi. Sounds like you and BTY need a pack for a RTYP race.

Ha, Johnny! I know diddly about baseball, but I gather there's no salary cap. It's made a hugh difference in the NHL. Much more exciting as teams are evenly matched. Although, like almost any team sport now (unless there's no cap and buckets of dough), loyalty to one team is out the window.

<looks up>

LAB! Woo hoo. I knew you'd crush it. And a veg lunch to boooot!

GL on the LR tomorrow, Tammy. Where'd you spend all that bowling loot?

30' easy this morning, followed by a fast cycle to the gorge for an hour paddling (fairly hard), a tempura cod tacone from the dumpster on the pier (okay, it's a storage bin turned into a kitchen, but it kind of looks like a clean dumpster), then a quick cycle home to, blech, work. Hitting the bright lights of the big city with Mustang Sally tonight. Get the bail money ready.

Oh yeah, I almost forgot to mention. My arch nemesis The Sandwich was at my race, but he wimped out and ran the 5K instead. Afterwards, we had a heart-to-heart and buried the hatchet. We're now best buds!

4 miles this morning easy and enjoying the flying leaves in the NE post storm wind, then off to UMass where the kiddo's team beat the Amherst team (bantam hockey). Homecoming at UMass and emotional tribute to the marching band director (he died of a heart attack at 57 years-old while en route to the UMass vs. UMichigan game last month---he had been the director since he was 24 years-old) Tribute today on the campus was amazing. Then a hat trick day for me as I headed into town and had coffee with Dirt! yes, THAT Dirt. Volunteer stint at the kiddo's high school and then a second run with the kiddo himself out on the x-country course. 7.3 miles in all and feeling good.

nice pic Lab! Glad to see you can be friends again - but you know, that sort of kills our fun with the "other" picture. that was probably your real motive wasn't it?

congrats on the hardware and smashing PR!

Souci - we debated spending the $15 at a nice little quaint italian place we like, where $15 won't go far, OR we could really splurge and get 15 items on a dollar menu.

quaint and italian won out. Bruschetta and an entree that we split. And then because she messed up a bit on our entree (still good - just not exactly what we ordered), she brought us a complimentary dessert - chocolate thunder with THEE absolute best ganache I've ever had. they should have called it death by chocolate.

David had a good football game. They won 24-0. David scored 2 td's, had a couple great tackle's and some good runs. Today we played at Lab's HS, the "Home of the Knights".
