Since I have to get the bike reworked and checked due to its return to me after a brief stay in someone else's yard all Sunday night.....<br><br>
It has been suggested that the missing toe cages are actually a cosmic sign that I should NOT replace them, and instead use clipless pedals.<br><br>
So.......Please cast your ballot....it will be public.<br><br>
1) YES! get them, we need the free entertainment of the coordination failures.<br>
2) No....stick with what you know you know how to do<br>
3) YES! get them, it's better to learn now how to use them, especially if you're going to do more tris<br>
4) No....stick with the toe cages so that you'll have a way to get around in normal shoes after you get a second bike later.<br>
5) What the devil are you talking about?

I was terrified!!!! But honestly, my uncoordinated self, has never fallen so don't believe it's a done deal you will fall. I switched a year ago, and even with 2 huge dogs chasing me into a ditch, I still manged not to fall.

Yah, but here's the thing--I started wearing cycling shoes when all that was available was slotty cleats with cages. Went over once. Of course, that was right in front of an ice cream place on a hot summer evening... Then switched over to SPDs when my shoes wore out and I couldn't get replacements. No problem switching over. Then, for Ruby I got SpeedPlays. Two months later promptly fell over at the start of a ride. Of course, my son was there and he just stood there laughing at me!!!

I bought mtn bike shoes for my road bike. That way I can walk in them. I will eventually get some road shoes.

Really, go with the clipless! I was really hesitant about them, and yes, I did manage a couple of embarassing falls, but I do believe I have more power on the hills being clipped in. They are really not that hard to use at all, it's just a matter of the clipping in and clipping out becoming as automatic as riding the bike. GO FOR IT!!

Me too...back when you needed to reach down and loosen the strap with your hand before you could even hope to get your foot out.<br><br>
Some pedals now are very easy to get out of...almost too easy. Try a pair of Speedplays. It doesn't get much easier than that.<br><br>

Stitch, go for it.<br><br>
I am less coordinated than you. I have fallen over sideways (twice, "Laugh-in" style"<img alt="wink.gif" src="http://files.kickrunners.com/smilies/wink.gif"> with clipless pedals due to:<br><br>
1. Receiving and trying to answer a cell phone call while going uphill on my bike. heh (<span style="font-size:xx-small;">I answered the phone in time as I lay sprawled in the street)</span><br><br>
2. When I lost momentum on a super-steep hill (trying to make the transition to standing) and didn't clip out in time. I hate that.<br><br>
Advice: Clip out and stop before you answer a cell phone.

Stitch - Don't let them scare you with all this talk about falling. I just bought my bike in October and have almost 1000 miles on it and haven't fallen over yet. Came close a few times though. Key thing is to set the clips so you can get out of them quick, but not to lose that when you pull up your foot comes out. I had that happen and I almost went down.<br><br>
Practice, practice, practice with them.

I'm totally chicken, too. I need to try them. But I've put it off for years.<br><br>
But I saw a pair of Keen sandals that are bike shoes, and that may be what pushes me over the edge. I can be swayed by cool shoes.<br><br>
I'm just terrified of getting hurt when I fall, and then not being able to run/bike/swim or something.
