A little commiseration, here?

It's weird it went from having some shin pain pop up here and there... to one of the most painful runs in my life like *snap*

I had some shin pain walking around, but not much, and it hurt when I touched the inside shin... but I thought it might be a "phantom pain" since with my being sick and all, I didn't run Friday, Sunday, or Monday (and only 5K on Saturday)..

But went on my run today and by halfway through, I had tears in my eyes. I finished running but it HURT.
On the plus side, it doesn't hurt very bad walking around afterwards. Sometimes when I run through, it stops hurting while I run, but begins hurting intensely every other second of my life. It's really sensitive to the touch so I'm icing it right now.

Looks like I'll be taking a few days off running.

I really don't get it either... Last weeks mileage wasn't high... All I can figure is more activity outside of exercise, and that I did a lot of "quality" runs last week. 4 of them... normally do 2-3 and 3-4 "junk" mile days... Thought it would be okay because I took two days off running instead of 1 like normal, but apparantly I was wrong.

If it's that bad, you might want to have it looked at... it could be something else, like a stress fracture or compartment syndrome.

I am not a medical person, so I don't know for sure, but that sounds worse than just shin splints to me.

I'm gonna take a couple days off and if it's not better on the next run I'll check it out.

I should probably mention I have very low pain tolerance when it comes to acute type pains. I'm a wimp.

Just maybe a thought. You said you "just" ran a 5k. I know you've been doing longer stuff and for many people their form in a 5k versus long distance is night and day with a 5k being more off the forefoot like a sprinter. If you are mostly a heel striker, this "just a 5k" could have been a little added stress to make it hurt...and hopefully a few days off will clear it up and confirm. Have your SO watch your foot position on these shorter runs versus your long runs---or even some photos might show your foot landing differently enough that you may want different shoes when you run 5k versus 1/2 marathon+.

Shin splits is one injury I've never dealt with so I'm not alot of help in the pain area, but ice can never hurt.
