When we moved him in to his new apartment he was headed for a summer course and also looking for work. Sadly, nothing came of the work side, but he's studied all summer and took a big step (for him) of going on a camping bike trip all alone. He had a blast, wants to do it again, and came home to an email from the university:

He has two scholarships covering a big chunk of this year's tuition. The first is a President's scholarship for academic achievement, and the second is a donor based award for having the highest standing in first year French.

I keep remembering that the genes for intelligence are from the mom's side, and I'm humbled. But dayum I'm proud for him.

He has had to struggle with his own demons as they pertain to both his disability and his perception of his disability. The "I could never..." sort of thing. He lacked some basic balance and didn't want to ride bike until he was into his teens and only then grudgingly. He's commuted by bike from his new apartment to school, along busy roads, but this was something beyond what he thought he could do. What enticed him was a fantastic book store on one of the hippie islands...

Hey, in some ways I'm more proud for him for conquering that barrier than for getting the marks!
