<p>I may have philosophical disagreements with Senator McCain but I think he understands interrogation better than the vast majority of Americans.</p>

<p>The other point I seem to not see from persons such as Santorum who so embrace "enhanced interrogation" techniques is what happens when U.S. soldiers have those same techniques used against them.  We would not exactly be in a position to object to them.</p>

<p>Unless Santorum is obliquely saying the treatment he got in North Vietnam has literally affected his mental capabilities, I don't get what his point was supposed to be, either.  And if that was his point, shame on him. </p>

<p>I agree that Santorum's the one who said it but he's only defending what the government already does.</p>

<p>I was listening recently to a gentleman (retired Navy e-9) who speaks several languages, is an expert in Arab and Muslim culture, and currently works for the government.  He was once an instructor at SERE training.  (Survival school)</p>

<p>He said that all instructors are waterboarded so they know what it's like.  He also said that waterboarding is not effective when it's used to break prisoners (like foreign govts tend to do) b/c they want info and breaking a prisoner mentally leads nowhere.  He commented that the mental destruction or damage to detainees is counterproductive because they have to wait for the detainee to heal/regain strength and that could be several months in which time the detainee has regained physical and mental health and all ground gained in interrogation has been lost.</p>
