Race today. Weather made it tough. Hung in for second AG, but it was close as 3-5 were right behind me. I didn't really have my A game today and ran strategically. The rib injury from last month limited my training, so I had to use my experience to pull me through this one. I think I played it pretty good. My friend Jim wasn't too thrilled though. He passed me at about 2.5 miles and I stayed either just behind him or within 20 yards until mile 12, where I passed him. From mile 10-12 there was a strong headwind and I was just behind him letting him do all the work. I think he tried slowing down a bit at one point in hopes I would pass and then pull him. No dice. Early on I told him about another guy in our AG who was about 50 yards ahead. Just after Jim passed him about mile 9.5, I worked to get on Jim's shoulder. The other guy wasn't too far behind though, plus another guy was just behind him. Both ended up passing Jim on the steep hill, but I had enough of a gap to hold them off.

Cold/mid 20s - Cloudy and very strong wind with occasional snow showers. Pueblo Rock Canyon Half Marathon. Mostly flat course with one steep hill just before mile 13. Starts in Pueblo City Park with two loops around the zoo, then down to the Arkansas River trail, out to the Pueblo Reservoir Dam and return to finish in City Park. Almost the entire course had about an inch of snow on it, but footing wasn't too bad. I got off to a decent start and was feeling OK. Then my friend Jim went by on the downhill to the river trail. I pretty much stuck behind him until mile 12, letting him cut through the wind. At mile 12 I was on his shoulder and made a strong pass by sprinting hard for about a quarter mile. That put enough of a gap on him so he wouldn't be able to catch up. Unfortunately for Jim, two other guys in our age group passed him on the hill. Places 2-5 in the age group finished lined up one after another and separated by less than 45 seconds. I took second even though I ran about 6 minutes slower than last year.
