Hi everyone,

Hope your Saturday's going well and you're keeping warm.

Well, I had a much better than expected result this morning at the 20k race. I figured after some hard workouts this week I would be good for about 7:15/mile pace today and would have happily taken anything under 1:30. Not only that but it was cold -- about 28 degrees at race time and the trail the race was run on had a lot of ice on it, including some black ice. Sometimes you couldn't see any ice below you but your feet were slipping anyway. All the slipping and sliding made my hammy real tight at one point so I had to worry about that for a couple of miles, too (fortunately it loosened back up eventually).

So what I do in these conditions? Oh, I just go out and nail down a 1:27:15 (unofficial, based on my watch)...7:01/mile and a 6-minute PR!!!

I came in 24th overall. I'm not sure yet how that stacks up in the age group but at the least I'm pretty sure I picked up decent club championship points (this was the DCCRC's official 20k championship race). That's an big pickup for me after missing the club 10-mile championship race 2 weeks ago; I was really bummed about that because I consider 10 to be my best distance.

One of my unstated goals of late has been to get myself below 7:00/mile for the 10-13.1 distances. I'm so close to that now. I'm absolutely certain as well that if today's race had continued for another 0.7 miles I would have PRed for a half marathon, too. My PR from Baltimore last fall is 1:33:19 and, well you can do the math.

All in all, this was a fantastic result for a non-targeted race.

Ellen - way to get that run in. The 30-minute time limit reminds me of the old community gym I used to belong to Arlington; they had that too. My wife and I had it down though...one us would tart on the elliptical, the other on the mill and then after 30 minutes, instant switcheroo.

Rhody - nice long run there. Well done.

Baba - just pick some races and do them! My marathon at Charlotte last month wasn't even on the radar screen in October, and it turned out to be the race of my life.

Dave - good job fighting through the exhaustion. It will all be worth it.

Dan - way to get out there.

Nirv - nice recovery run. I haven't read about your meet yet, but will do so next.

4bm - 10-miler plus some bike trainer time. Very impressive.

RA - have fun with the 800s.

xcr - glad to see you got out there. Just take it slow getting back into it, there's no reason to hurry.

Tonya/Phill - have fun and remember -- open bar.

kfuller - have a good run later

RichardC - enjoy the off day and good luck with that cold tomorrow. Today's Washington Post had an interesting article about the bratwurst place next to Lambeau...Pack fans are one of a kind, I have to hand them that!

OK, time for me to get ready for another quick trip up to Philly...seeing my Saint Joseph's Hawks take on Penn at the Palestra tonight! Have a great rest of the day everyone.
