Hi long run runners.

As many of you know, I have developed a dislike for cold weather running so I was not pleased when the forecast for my race this morning was 40° and possible rain. Then the Buckeyes basketball team was scheduled to play late the evening before so I wouldn't get much sleep. I got to Papa Johns stadium around 5:00 yesterday to pick up my packet. I walked by about 6 booths total for the "expo" (I think only 1 was actually selling anything and the others were running charities). I looked up my number and went to the desk to get it. The lady found my number and handed me my "packet" which was a big plastic bag. When I opened it up, there was a simple white race t-shirt and ....nothing else. I then left to drive the course. It started about a 1/4 mile from the stadium and went 3 miles south on fairly level road before turning into a very hilly park. I wasn't able to drive the whole way in the park, but I got the idea. When we exited the park, we retraced our route back to the start before turning and going over an overpass before heading into the stadium for the finish.

I killed a couple hours before the Buckeyes played and ended up at a Hooters full of Kentucky fans. (I won't give my thoughts about how I think large groups of "fans" act during a game)

Keeping myself from falling asleep (the game didn't start until about 10) I was disappointed they got beat. I finally got to sleep around 1 and was up at 6. I stopped for hydration (44 oz diet mt dew) and headed to the stadium. I read the paper for a while and after standing in line for the porta john with the temp at 39° and a brisk breeze all I could think about was running along sunny Bayshore Blvd in Tampa last month and how this was not going to be as enjoyable. At that point, I decided not to do the race. Instead, I let my alter ego Disco Dan run for me.

Since the start was a distance from the car, DD decided to just run in trainers so he didn't have to change shoes. So off he went in black NB 720s, bright yellow socks, black sweat pants, black compression shirt under green flowery disco shirt and pinkish purple tie, black and yellow wind jacket, brown jersey gloves, and big headphones. DD didn't let anyone know but he was really listening to Bon Jovi and John Mellencamp!! After a 2 mile warmup, he took the jacket off and tied it around his waist for good luck.

The race started and DD got to the first mile in 6:28 which seemed a little fast. The 2 mile came in 13:12 (6:44) The third mile was a gradual uphill and DD ran that in 6:42. That is when the hills started that included long ups and long downs for the next 3 miles. Disco finally started to wake up and pass a few people running those 3 miles in 6:40, 6:40, 6:37 going through 6 miles in 39:51. The next downhill mile back into the wind was a quick 6:21 followed by a steady 6:30. The 9th mile was passed in 59:20 (6:38) but might have been a little long since DD ran the last mile that included a large overpass in 6:18. He finished the race for me in a chip time of 1:05:37 just missing an award placing 4th out of 414 in the 45-49 AG. 106/7013 overall.

Now I'm even thinking about letting Disco Dan run a few more races for me this summer.
