Saddle recommendations

Hello,

I'm in desperate need to find a saddle that's comfortable and I was looking for some recommendations. I'm on my second one within a year and I just can't seem to get use to them. Right now I have an Adamo tri seat and it has a cut out which I like, but after an hour it just gets uncomfortable in the sit bone, or whatever its called.

Is it normal to have some discomfort with a seat? I always figured you just deal with it, but maybe that's not correct? Who's got a comfy seat? Thanks for any recommendations!

Unfortunately saddle choice is a VERY personal thing - as I'm sure everyone who has spent a little time in it will agree! The best cure for discomfort is time in the saddle (unfortunately) - and hopefully one your nether regions and sit bones can deal with. Also - you may find very minor adjustments to the saddle - nose tilt, etc - can make a world of difference. As JR says - don't be afraid to play around!

That being said - I've ridden with a Koobi Xenon saddle (total split rail, not a cut-out) for 3-4 seasons and 6-8,000 miles and still find it comfortable enough - even on 50+ mile rides. And no - it wasn't the listed price...

http://www.koobi.com/index.asp?PageA...WPROD&ProdID=5

If you don't mind the weight, many old school cyclists swear by an all-leather (Brooks) saddle that may require some break in period.

Another old-school saddle that seems to have a lot of fans is the Selle Sans Marco Rolls ...

I have not ridden on either of the above, but - have read good things in a quest for a new saddle.

I'll let others pipe in ...

I can't decide if it's my seat or if I'm just not used to having my nether region split in half. I'm taking my bike into the LBS this afternoon and we're going to try several different seats on my bike. Maybe I'll find one that doesn't make me want to .
I'm female, the LBS owner is male. I don't think he quite understands what I'm saying when I tell him it's splitting my hoo-hoo in half. I hope I don't have to get more graphic.ottytrain1:

As I recall from when I did more biking....
the "splitting in half" feeling did eventually go away, but it was there for awhile. Each time I rode, it was a little better...so I figured it was just getting used to it that was needed.

BUT, it was pretty "bruised" feeling at first...and made sitting at all rather interesting.

You just have to try a bunch of them out for yourself. Last year I was having saddle issues and I got recommendations from everyone and tried the three that came most highly recommended.....all three were the most painful saddles I have ever had the displeasure to ride on. I eventually went back to my original, stock saddle with some position adjustments and I was fine. I just got a new bike and the saddle it came with was excruciating for me. So, I went and got my trusty old fav off my old bike and it is great.

Saddles are like running shoes....you just have to keep trying them until you find one that works with your anatomy. Find a bike shop with a generous return policy and start trying them out.

Here again is where having a good relationship with a good LBS is a huge plus.
Mine is run by man who is the mechanic and his partner who is a woman.
When I told her the saddle that came with the bike wasn't working she whipped it off, put another one on and said if it's not comfy we'll try something else, and did not charge me.

This new one actually feels good on the sits bones. The "hooHah" still gets a little numb though after a long time on it. Don't know if it's possible to get one that doesn't happen with.

I second the Koobi. I have the tri version. The nice thing about them is they have a 30 day, no questions asked return policy.

Another company with a 30 day return policy is Terry. They have a bunch of different saddle styles, too. They didn't give me any grief when I sent back my 4th saddle from them and didn't end up buying one.

Sometimes a sore crotch is related to:

saddle is nose down or nose-up rathe rthan flat
hips not rotated when riding (common issue)
poor quality shorts
sitting around in filthy shorts after a ride
poorly set up bike
riding around with elbows locked which then throws weight back on the torso
stiff wheels with hard tires

I think it also depends on your postion. Took me about 10 rides in a Serfas Gel saddle for sit bones to feel good, and they still feel good 1600 miles later if I ride on the hoods.

When I am aero, the pressure switches from sit bones to the perineum ( the area between the butt and man parts) and that still gets sore. But then I am riding the nose of the saddle and not on the wide part of the saddle.

John I seem to recall that some time back you posted some really good detailed information about this on the old multisport forum. You wouldn't be able to repost the info would you please? I thought it was excellent and would like to revisit it, and I'm sure that there are others here who would also really benefit from it.

Many thanks .

And after about 18 months of horrible saddle issues (contributed to by hip imbalance), and probably holding the world record for trying a gazillion different saddles, I moved my seat position back and I've now found comfort on a mens Specialised Toupe. Lets hope it stays that way when I get past doing 4 hour rides again!
